Email to a specific note inside a notebook

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Could someone please let me know if this is possible.

When I send an email to evernote, can I specify the note I want it to go to inside the notebook?

For example:

I have a notebook named medical.

I have a note called USMD that includes bills and receipts.

When I receive a receipt in email, can I send it to the USMD note inside the Medical notebook?

Thanks,

Laurie

It's not possible to append to an existing note via EN email. You can direct an email to an existing notebook using @notebook_name in the subject line and #tag_name to tag the new note.

Alternatively, you might be able to work out something via IFTTT, as this has an 'Append to Evernote' action (https://ifttt.com/channels/evernote/actions/62-append-to-note).

[Edit] There are more comprehensive instructions and detail for emailing into EN in the knowledgebase.

The syntax to append an email to an existing note would be to add a [space] and a "+" to the end of the subject line (after including the note title, that is).

This seems to be a hit-and-miss for many.

Take a look at this post - this user seems to have isolated specific parameters for doing so:

Here's a further post by Jamie Todd Rubin which goes into a little more detail:

He goes through the minutiae step by step with some nice annotated screenshots.

Good luck!!

A big challenge to providing this "append to note" feature is that Evernote does not expose a unique Note identifier to the user.

There is an unique ID called a "GUID", but it is not shown on the user interface.

The same exact Title can be used with multiple Notes, so Title is not a good choice for ID.

IAC, until/IF Evernote provides a "append to note" feature, you might find using tags works well, perhaps even better.

You could assign a Notebook and a tag of "USMD" to the Note as part of the email subject line.

One great benefit to creating this as a separate Note is that it records the date/time, and the Title can be more reflective of the receipt (for use in searching) than if you just append it to a Note.

I use the Append to Evernote recipe frequently (for Facebook/Twitter logging) and it works great! Except we should note that IFTTT only supports plain text transmission (you can include HTML in the recipe, however). So, attachments are a no-go.

I'm curious to see if Apple's recent Notes app update will spur Evernote to improve upon this feature... it's very tempting (at least for short-term items).
