suitable margins for manuscript annotations without zooming

Recommended Posts

I am a book editor, and I want to mark up my clients' manuscripts and write margin notes using a tablet. I was going to buy an iPad today, but for the side margin to be wide enough for me to write notes, I'd have to zoom in. That made the manuscript page so big, the display showed only the right half of the manuscript page. That means I would have swipe the manuscript left to right, left to right, to read each full line of typescript and then write notes in the margins. That would make me nuts.

My clients' manuscripts are formatted with 1.25" margins left and right, which gives me space to write my comments. That's the width I need on the tablet display and still be able to read whole line of typescript, left to right.

So. Any suggestions, either about what tablet might serve my needs, or if Evernote can accommodate me?

Hi.  This is a public forum,  so I'd recommend taking your email address out of the initial post - it's a spam magnet.

No help on tablets I'm afraid - sounds like you need the biggest screen you can find (maybe a Surface?) but most are designed for zooming and reasonable resolution.  You have a pretty specialised use case in mind,  so I would suggest you try out Evernote's annotation capablities on an existing device before you commit to it full time.

What is the document type of the manuscripts?  PDF or something else?  What tool do you want to use to annotate the documents?

You may have screen size issues with a tablet.  And my expertise is limited using a pen with Skitch or in a PDF editor.  Some of the newer touch screen laptop like devices seem to have a built in pen component.  Afraid not much help here.
