Evernote Suggestion

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of Evernote but I also keep up with OneNote. Overall Evernote is a better application in my opinion by a large margin. That said one thing I do like better about OneNote is it adds an additional level or organization to it's notes with note groups within a Notebook. The equivalent would be a "stack within a stack". What are the chances that can be added?

You should be able to achieve something similar with tags - you can 'stack' tags as deep as you want,  so you could have a parent tag "groups" with child tags "home" and "work" and grandchild tags to further levels if you wish.  There have been repeated requests however for more 'depth' in the stacks / notebooks / notes layout,  but no sign of Evernote wishing to develop in this direction...

I know you can do it with Tags but that doesn't really help what I'm trying to do. I use tags heavily as well but they don't really fit my particular application.

If there are that many requests for additional layers of stacks, you'd think Evernote would take note, especially with the increasing competition. MS hasn't been subtle about the fact that they're staying true to their reputation of improving upon the ideas of others while dominating certain markets. Note taking software isn't immune and there are means of migrating data.

Pay attention Evernote...

This is a very often requested feature, and it has been for years. I think we can conclude that it is not a priority for Evernote. Whether it should be or not, well, that's a different debate. The reality is, there is no easy hierarchy, and there isn't likely to be one in the near future.

Evernote has chosen a flat non-mutually exclusive taxonomy. Personally this is my favoured taxonomic strategy, so it is fine by me, and it is how I use other applications as well.

There are strategies to impose hierarchy in evernote, but they are a bit clumsy. So if you can't work with the flat, non-mutually exclusive system in Evernote, you might consider some of the other options out there.

I love Evernote for everything but the program's inability to reorder a list. So I use another task manager for my daily lists and Evernote to store most things.  I would definitely have kept my Premium account if I was able to reorder a to-do list.

I agree, i've never found evernote terribly useful for straight-up list-keeping or even for to-do's of any kind for that matter (except for lists embedded in some longer note). Like you I use a dedicated application for that sort of thing, and I use note links liberally to link to-do's to Evernote notes where necessary.
