Evernote was already installed by another user. Only one per-user installation is supported.

Hi

Just been trying to update to the latest version on my Windows 8.1 PC and it gives the above error.  So far I've:

- uninstalled the previous version

- ran Revo uninstaller

- ran cCleaner

- tried several of the suggestions I found by searching here (I gather this issue is quite common ?!)

None of this has worked.

My evernotesetuplog.txt looks like this:

Hi.  You say you followed several suggestions already;  you're probably as much of an expert on this as anyone.  To avoid getting those same suggestions fed back to you again though,  can you list out briefly what you've already tried?

Here's a link from a third party source - http://tpsconsulting.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/evernote-peruser-install-by-another.html

Brian, it appears that you have taken prudent steps that should have resolved your issue in most cases.

The fact that you still have the issue indicates to me that it is very complicated, and most is likely something specific to your machine and setup.

I have looked at the links provided above, as well as done my own research, and I don't see a clear cut process that doesn't involve significant risk to follow at this point.

So, IMO, the best course of action is to contact Evernote Support, and get them to work with you directly.  They will be able to get specific information about your environment to help identify and fix the issue.  To get EN Support requires a Premium or Business account.  If you have a Basic account, you can upgrade for $5 for one month, which by comparison to most tech support cases is pretty cheap.

You can contact EN Support online (then with email) and via EN Chat.  Chat will give you the fastest response.

If you have any Local Notebooks or unsync'd Notes, you should export them to ENEX files (one NB per file) for backup purposes.

See Evernote Chat Support., available business days 7am-7pm US CST.

(Chat option appears AFTER you click “Continue” on initial “Evernote Support” page.)

See Submit a BUG report via an EN Support Ticket. In the Support Form, select "Report a bug", and start the Ticket Title with "BUG:  " to make it clear.  Reporting a bug should be available to all users, including Free Account owners.  Other Ticket types available to Free users are "Data Loss", "Crash", & "Sync Issue".

Good luck, and please post the cause/fix for your case so others can benefit in the future.

Well, I took JMichael's advice and upgraded temporarily to a premium account.  After some messing around and the issue being escalated I eventually got an email with instructions that cured the issue:

The following steps should correct the issue.
Open regedit (Windows key + R, type "regedit") and search (Control + f) for the following:

{A5C8B875-E86C-4783-83F4-F35E788FFC29}
{f761359c-9ced-45ae-9a51-9d6605cd55c4}
{AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}
{E190C2EAF5FC03E468956D042EA3B899}

If you locate any of these, delete them. Reboot your computer.

Then, From the Windows "Start" menu, bring up the Windows command prompt (or Run "cmd").
From the Windows command prompt, go into the temporary directory by typing this:

cd %TEMP%

Look for a file called evernote.msi . If you find it, please double-click it to run it. You may be given the option to Install/Repair/Remove. Try Install, if available, otherwise, Remove.
If "Install" is an option, let me know how that works for you.
If "Remove", please do so, and then try installing from the .exe file once more.

The .msi file wasn't there, but I tried installing from the .exe again and this time it worked.

The 4 registry GUIDs specified above were basically the ones mentioned in my evernotesetup.log file.  I don't know if these are specific to me or are more general.  Anyway, 3 of the 4 were not there at all but one was.  I deleted 2 instances of that.

What seems to be happening is that the setup program barfs if there's any trace in the registry of a previous Evernote installation that you might have uninstalled.

I have to say that, much as I like Evernote, this issue with the installer (which seems to be fairly common and stretches back several years) and the way Evernote deal with it, sucks.  You'd have thought that, if for no other reason than to reduce their support load, they'd have dealt with it before now. :angry:

Anyway, thanks to JMIchael and gazumped for your help :)

Why doesnt Evernote provide a Evernote cleanup tool?

Ive been researching this issue for a while now and seeing how deep Evernote plants itself in the registry its a bit strange they dont make a cleanup utility like the Citrix Cleanup tool which is exellent btw.

Just a thought.

Hi.  There are already several cleanup utilitiies,  and a couple of uninstall apps that will clean up registry keys.  As long as easy fixes exist Evernote presumably don't feel the need...
