Sorry if I am reposting an old issue but the search facility on this forum seems to be down.

 

I am using Evernote WebClipper on Safari and although I am based in the UK the WebClipper app is constantly trying to connect to the Chinese site Yinxiang.

According to Little Snitch, it attempted to connect over 200000 times in the first hour.

I am aware this is an Evernote service but am a little concerned that my data is being stored on Chinese servers despite this affirmation from the Evernote blog.

 

It states that;

 

This still leaves the question of government access. The laws and practices controlling data stored on servers in China are evolving rapidly and Yinxiang Biji will comply with Chinese regulations applicable to the service. This means users of Yinxiang Biji should be aware that Chinese authorities may have the right to access their data according to current regulations.

The existing Evernote service will continue to operate out of servers located in California under the protection of US privacy laws.

I contacted Evernote Customer support and was informed that

'Non-chinese customers' data are stored on our servers in the US, but I can't say what level of access, if any, the Chinese government has to our servers in China. Sometimes our apps signals can get crossed and try to access the wrong server. This is especially common if using a VPN or Proxy server.'

 

I uninstalled and reinstalled the WebClipper app which worked fine for a while but is no back to it's old habit of try to connect to Yinxiang.

 

Am I being a touch paranoid or is there something to be concerned about here?

I, too, am baffled by this behavior, especially since it seems to strike only once every few weeks or so. Evernote has not made it clear why anyone clearly not a Chinese citizen would ever have their data punted to a server in China for any reason whatsoever.

 

Why does this behavior happen only sporadically, appearing quite randomly? Why is (presumably) Evernote trying to bounce my data across the planet to servers under a government with irrefutably shady Internet policies? Bad enough Evernote is probably thoroughly open to the NSA, et al. Let's not just give away my personal data to China, please.

 

This odd behavior is the only process that ever exhibits this type of excessive "calling home." (I, too, am a Little Snitch user.) Doesn't matter which browser, time of day, or my location. Though anvtiviral/malware sofftware never flag Evernote, this process reeks of a Trojan. Since the process appear to be open-ended once it starts, I always quit the affected browser. This quashes the process every time. But, still. . . .

 

Given the variability of the Web Clipper feature set across browsers, I have considered moving to a different service altogether. I generally have no other big complaints with Evernote, aside from this suspicious behavior.

Glad to hear it. Would still like an explanation why this bug occurs and if there is a security issue involved.

Still happening in Safari. I could obviously use another browser but I use Safari as it by far the best suited for my studies.

 

There are Evernote alternatives, DEVONthink and Thinkery being 2 of them.

 

Which is a shame as I am happy with Evernote apart from this odd Chinese server behaviour.

But it's the small things that make the difference and this is one of those situations. 

That and it's been almost a month since a fix was found and was being tested.
