offline notebook access and later online sync

Recommended Posts

A bit confused with the offline access thing in the free account. Basically, my question is: Let's say I have a todo notebook which I update while being offline from the evernote app on my tablet or iphone. I assume that when I come online these new notes will be synced. It that correct? And this sync is guaranteed, right? Is there any chance of losing new or updated notes while being offline? Thanks.

If you update a note while offline and then sync when a network connection is available,  and provided no-one else (including you) makes the mistake of opening the same note on a different device before syncing that device to update notes to the current version,  you will be fine.  Sounds more complicated than it is.  Just always sync before and sync after you make any changes to a note,  on any device.  And don't share your user details with anyone!

To clarify a bit, Gaz means manually Sync before and after any changes, in addition to your auto-Sync schedule.

Sorry Gaz, wanted to be sure that part was clear. ☺

Thanks for the assist.  Sometimes my wonderful skill as a wordmith slightly desserts me.  (Pudding pun intended... :P)

Thank you for replies. The manual sync has gotten me a bit worried now I must confess. Isn't auto-sync occuring every time the device comes online or not?

Manual sync is just a belt+braces (suspenders?) way to ensure that sync has happened.  If you're using a desktop,  F9 will do the trick.  If in doubt,  F9.

You should NOT rely on auto-sync, especially for important Notes, and when you have been offline for a while.

As soon as you have Internet access to your iPhone or tablet, I recommend doing a MANUAL sync.

Think of sync like "saving" in a non-cloud app.

I have developed a habit that helps me avoid 99% of sync issues:

  1. Manually sync, and sync often.  Don't rely on the autosync.
  2. Always manually sync after:
    1. Entry/Edit of an important Note
    2. The end of each session
    3. The end of each day
    4. You're finished with one device, and want to switch to another device
    5. You first start using another device
  3. For important work, view the Notes on the other device to make sure all Notes are sync'd
  4. Backup important and hard-to-replace Notes. Go to File > Export to export as an ENEX archive file.
  5. Make sure you have an active, frequent Backup system always running (at least once a day, hourly if possible)
    1. I use Time Machine on the Mac for hourly backups of changes
    2. A lot of people use the online backups like Carbonite and CrashPlan

I know it may sound/look like a lot of work, but once you get into the habit of doing this stuff, it becomes automatic, second nature.
