Enable Two-Step authentication when unable to receive SMS message?

Having just reset my Android device, I need to reconfigure Google Authenticator so that it can work with Evernote authentication.

 

However, to set up 2-step authentication, requires entering a phone number that can receive SMS messages. I have such a phone number (AirTel, India) but I get "Enter a valid phone number that can receive SMS messages".

 

I suspect my phone number (which can happily receive SMS messages in India) does not allow receiving the type of SMS messages sent by Evernote.

 

Is there a workaround?
