Maybe I don't understand syncing ...

Recommended Posts

I've had Evernote for a while but only last week began planning to use it seriously. I imported a folder full of text files into a new Evernote notebook. I'm sharing that notebook with someone else. I thought that if I changed a file in the folder or added a new file that Evernote would automatically import it into my notebook or at least do it when I hit the sync icon.

Does Evernote do this or have I misunderstood syncing and folder importing?

Thanks!

You've misunderstood the import folders functionality -- it is for import, not syncing. Assuming that you've unchecked the "Delete file after import" option, once a file has been imported via import folders, changes to the file will not be synced to the note that was created on its first import. Instead, the file will be re-imported as a new note (this should be done automatically, as Evernote monitors import folders for changes).

You would need to either rdit the note directly in Evernote, or, for non text files (which should be imported as attachments), edit the attachment using Open / Open With.

This is exactly the way the import folder feature works. (It happens independently from sync.)  A new or modified file will be imported into a new note in Evernote. But occasionally, the import information gets wonky & you need to add it back in.

However, as Jefito said, if you're expecting changes to an existing file to be sync'd to the existing note in Evernote, then no, that is not what Evernote does.
