How to remove checkboxes/bullets from lists

This last week, the app for my Kindle Fire HDX updated. Since then, I *cannot* remove bullets or checkboxes from my lists. Am I doing something wrong? I'm in "Edit," doing all the moves I've done with no problem, only now nothing is deleted.

Any ideas how to remove them?
