How to use notebooks, tags effectively?

(relatively) newbie question:  what is the best strategy for using notebooks vs. tags for organization?  I have been putting 'ideas' in the same notebooks (e.g., history, recipes, books, movies), but have also been using "Clippings Converter" for Kindle (as I am a power Kindle user).    Clippings Converter will import tags but does not (explicitly) organize clips into notebooks.   So when I import, I can only cross reference by tags. 

 

Any strategies generally (and specifically) appreciated!
