Serious performance lag just typing in notes - client freezes

I am unable to really type in notes without the client locking up. I have tested this with the latest 5.6.4 public release (Aug 28).

What I think is happening is it is trying to sync it in the background, but with 25,000 notes in a 20GB database, nothing is fast. So I can type 50-100 characters and then it locks up while it does whatever it does (I assume the background sync) then can type another 50-100 chars and it repeats.

It is so bad I've quit typing in Evernote. I type in Word and then copy and paste into EN, which is pretty bad.

Is there a registry hack to disable this, or change the sync time to way WAY higher than what it is?

Have you tried going in and turning off via Tools > Options > Sync?

Then just manually syncing from now on, I mean.

No. this isn't the periodic sync. This is the constant syncing that goes on for individual notes. Open Help||Activity Log, then click on a note and you'll see what I mean.

Not sure I've seen constant syncing for individual notes, how does that happen?   Does the icon spin when it does?

In any case, may not be your issue, or what you want to hear with 20GB, but I was having issues importing an ENEX backup of a local notebook two weeks ago.  Just kept dying.  I had a bunch of noise in the activity log about "updating local resource....", probably 300+ lines of the stuff.  The lines referenced notes that weren't even in a sync notebook.  Something was hosed up.  So I took the plunge and rebuilt and now each sync creates maybe 10 lines, and the import worked without any issues.  Don't know how I got there, but the reload fixed it.  FWIW

It isn't constant syncing. I just meant EN is continually checking for note changes and syncing the changes. So I have my full sync set for 15min, but in that 15min interval, if I am working with notes, EN may sync 5-25 times depending on how much editing I am doing.

And I cannot reload my database. I've tried on a 2nd machine. There is something hosed with my account and I've been working on it for 2 weeks. I do have a support ticket open on it.

I'm in a similar situation to EdH - recent(ish) database rebuild,  18K+ notes,  latest (today) version.  Every time I go to the app to view a note,  edit a title or run a search I get a 'freeze'. Coincidently (not) disk activity hits 100% and stays there for as long as the app is frozen.  As soon as activity drops to normal levels I get my note back.  A few seconds each time (occasionally longer) but really annoying.  I thought it might be the local database reindexing itself,  bit I have seen suggestions that it might be AVG antivirus (which I use) obsessively checking on Evernote's file activity.  Planning to test-drive Avast shortly - will advise if I get anywhere!

Gazumped, yes, I forgot to mention the HD was at 100%. I know it isn't the AV though. I have told MS Essentials months ago to ignore .exeb files hoping that would help. It hasn't.

I don't see the same behavior for some reason.  If I modify a note the sync does not occur until the 15 minute auto sync.  I just tested by modifying two notes, got the * on both, went to the web and the notes have not been updated there as yet.  There some setting somewhere that would cause syncs in addition to the 15 minutes?

Out of interest, just did the inverse.  Made a change on the web and when I accessed the note in Windows a fetch was not done so the web change was not on the PC.  I thought I read somewhere that when you accessed a note on the PC it checked the web version for currency, not so it appears.  No business notebooks here if that makes any difference, nor inbound shared.    Avast also.

Open the activity log. Help|Activity Log.

Move that window over somewhere.

In Evernote, just start clicking other notes.

Does it not check for the lock status of notes? In doing this, it is also sending minor text changes before the full note syncs. This started with 5.5 I think, or maybe 5.4.

It does not check for the lock status of notes, the activity log just sits.  I have to hit the sync button to get any movement in the log.  But again, no business or editable shared notebooks here.

Ed,

Currently running 5.6.3.4351 beta, will move to the new GA tomorrow.  If it helps for comparison - Windows 7 Professional, 8 GB memory, 240GB SSD, 25K notes (10K local), 14.5GB exb .  Usually running EN, mail and the odd browser.  My speed went south with 5.0 and came back to virtually instantaneous with 5.5, been great since.  Only sync issue I have had recently is the one described above and the rebuild fixed that.  Again, I share a couple of notebooks out (view only), but none to me.  And no business.  If I knew what the twinkie dust was I'd send it your way.

Using the Activity Log trick (Thanks EdH!) I noticed that every time I click on a note there's a quick search online for 'related notes'.  Switched that off in the View options on the desktop menu bar.

I don't use the related notes feature.  I flipped on per gazumped above.  No real impact on speed for me that I could see.  Activity log shows getting four results for non shared notebook, though it doesn't always refresh when you cycle between notes.  There is some locking verbiage for a note in a shared notebook,  The locking verbiage cycles about every 15 seconds as long as the note is current.

Ed, don't know if this is the twinkie dust, but would be interested in what you find.

That is very strange. This is what I get EVERY SINGLE TIME I click on a note:

10:09:50 [14220] 0% Retrieving note lock status for "'Newsletter' email: Barbecue Food"
10:09:50 [14220] 0% * guid={A1BF694A-5121-405A-9CA2-0FF0F4B2F03D}
10:09:50 [14220] 0% * noteUpdateSequenceNumber: 313015
10:09:50 [14220] 0% * viewingUserIds: xxxxx
10:09:53 [14220] 0% Retrieving note lock status for "Order Notification for Injured Warrio..."
10:09:53 [14220] 0% * guid={4CEDE5F7-6017-48C1-9DFC-B0065848E936}
10:09:53 [14220] 0% * noteUpdateSequenceNumber: 313018
10:09:53 [14220] 0% * viewingUserIds: xxxxx
10:09:58 [14220] 0% Retrieving note lock status for "Summer In The City Remix EP | Freedom..."
10:09:58 [14220] 0% * guid={48FA3AE9-C734-4E90-A542-A1A6FEEC9DBA}
10:09:58 [14220] 0% * noteUpdateSequenceNumber: 309843
10:09:58 [14220] 0% * viewingUserIds: xxxxx

That lock status thing is so it does some sort of rapid update, and it is that rapid update when I am actually in a note that I think is causing this freezing.

For comparison csihilling, My PC is similar, I just have a 512GB hybrid drive instead of a pure SSD. 100% of my 25K notes are sync'd in a 20-21GB EXEB file.

I get the below if I select a note in a shared notebook.  The note listed is the note I selected.

12:32:06 [1572] 0% Connecting to www.evernote.com/edam/note/s1

12:32:06 [1572] 0% Retrieving note lock status for "Guacamole Recipe"

12:32:06 [1572] 0% * guid={............

12:32:06 [1572] 0% * noteUpdateSequenceNumber: 338768

12:32:06 [1572] 0% * viewingUserIds: (me)

If I force a sync I get the following.  Other than a selecting a shared note, nothing happens in the Activity log unless there is a sync.

12:36:34 [2872] Client synchronization started

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Connecting to www.evernote.com/edam/note/s1

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Loaded updateCount: 422081

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Usage Metrics: sessionCount=0

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Client is up to date with the server, updateCount: 422081

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Connecting to www.evernote.com/edam/user

12:36:34 [2844] 0% Updating user "xxxx"

12:36:34 [2844] 0% * email last verified 2014/03/14 16:06:51 (UTC-5:00)

12:36:38 [2844] 0% Retrieving missing search text for 909 resources

12:36:38 [2872] Client synchronization finished, status: complete

12:36:38 [2872] * elapsed time: 3s

Have you considered exporting and then deleting the offending notes to see what happens?

It is every note. They are all offending. The whole thing is offensive.

Justin Street (employee) passed on a comment that the extra levels of help were only intended to be used as directed by Support.. and I've seen a post (apologies if it was someone here) that using one of the options actually slowed Evernote down a little..  so Use At Your Own Risk!  (and with backups..)
