ScanSnap EE comes with "hardware OCR"?

See this comment (same thread) for more..

That comment contains neither "OCR" nor "hardware" in it's text.  And it's rather long.

Am I overlooking something?

That post outlines what the SSEE does differently from the iX500,  which is what is meant by "Hardware OCR".  Lots of extra bells and whistles which will help if you have piles of miscellaneous paper to scan.

This comment appears to provide a much better comparison.

To me, "hardware OCR" = "optical character recognition done by the scanning-device hardware, not the software on the host computer or service provided by the Internet."  I see nothing that speaks to this.  Further, I thought OCR functionality has been historically only delivered by software running from the host computer or on a server on the Internet/cloud, not the scanner device.  (eg, by Evernote software/service or ABBYY FineReader, and not the ScanSnap device.)  So I'm still confused.

Am I still missing something?

I think the difference in our links is that between an "outline" and a listing of features.  If you're choosing between the two scanners,  either should help.  If you're looking to establish in detail how much of the heavy lifting in OCR is carried out natively by the SSEE I can only suggest you raise a query through the feedback channel,  which is accessed via the support link below.
