Looked very briefly. Installed without problems, except that it was no longer pinned to the task bar - seems to be an ongoing problem with new releases.

I was able to click on my shortcuts in the top bar - appears that the problem was simply not allowing enough time to search through 12,000 notes to get the ones that are needed. I thought the search was actually saved so that there was no need to keep reinventing the wheel every time a particular link was clicked on, but that could be my misunderstanding. It must be misunderstanding, because the search is almost instantaneous from the left panel (same shortcut).

Keep up the good work - maybe one day we'll have that perfect app?!

  1. Issue here on shortcuts across the top not working not fixed but I know the cause has now been determined, so those of you in the same boat, be patient.  :)

  2. The "Save/Discard" buttons being removed from the Annotate applette are still frustrating. Can anyone from En comment as to whether this is a permanent decision or an exploration? This is really frustrating.

Can we get someone to take a look at the tab order here? I'd personally rather the TAB key be disabled than to work so completely wrong as it does now, because the way it works now is frustrating and take time for you to figure out you cannot use it anyway. If it just didn't work at all, then I wouldn't waste so much time getting lost in the note UI.

And still no way to resize the stamps?

OK - I got a question;  and a possible feature request..  When I click a link to an executable file I get a pop-up that informs me "You are about to open executable file <myfile>.  Are you sure you want to open this file?"  There's an OK and Yes option,  but no "Don't show me this message again".  I was interested in the idea of using Evernote as my shortcut list because'

  • I have 30 or so packages I use as standard
  • Some of them aren't named anything like they should sound - I have system audit software called 'Belarc Advisor' and a duplicate file finder called 'Anti-Twin' forinstance.  I sometimes have a couple of different apps installed for some purposes and they don't wind up sorted anywhere close to each other In a normal listing.  My printer has several bits of associated software called different things that I'd prefer to list under the printer name.
  • Evernote allows me to add tags and keywords so I can get a quick list of everything I need and group stuff together as necessary.
  • It would save me time,  when I have help,  to say "use the duplicate file software" than to spell out the names of each installed package.
  • I can copy the list for any computer with the same software installs so co-workers can be on the same page easily and quickly.

I'd like to use Evernote for this but that "are you sure?" message is annoying.  If there isn't a way to suppress it in the Registry,  can there be an option to do this please?

There is a work-around already - I can just copy the shortcut into a note,  which doesn't prompt the same warning;  but a shortcut icon takes up three lines of normal text so bulks out any list considerably.  And yes I know I could change exe file names,  but that just makes updates more confusing.  File tags don't apply to shortcuts,  otherwise I'd use them.

Any suggestions here guys?

I don't think that has anything to do with Evernote. If I understand you correctly, you are running apps stored in Evernote. When you click on a file in EN, it copies the file to a temp directory and launches. Windows intercepts and asks the question as a security measure. I don't think any app can override that behavior.

Any hidden registry entries to control the behavior?

Sorry if I wasn't clear - no,  we're talking about software installed on my PC for which I have a working shortcut and all the usual accesses through folders and the Start screen.  I have shortcuts in a folder on my desktop,  and have experimented with a folder tree (why doesn't Windows have tags for shortcuts  :() so all my image-handling stuff like Photoshop,  Picassa and XnView can be grouped together.  It's just that like all folder trees ;) I sometimes forget exactly where I put a shortcut,  because some apps do more than just one thing and others can be categorised under several different headings.  Do I put MindManager under planning / diaries / to-do...

I wanted to treat Evernote like a start menu and keep my links in notes so I could search for topics and see a list of all relevant software,  then click on the link and launch the executable stored on my hard drive to start the app.  Evernote will do this,  but only via a very large (well,  pretty big) icon,  or that warning message which gets annoying after a while...

I was thinking more in terms of an EN entry in the registry to not ask the question.  Clueless as to whether anything like that exists, just a thought.

Another thought, create one note per short cut link, tag them by "folder(s)", and create tag searches.  Shouldn't be too many in any one list of notes if the base is 30 or so.  And if named correctly, a couple of key strokes in the search bar could retrieve all of your "folder(s)" tag searches.  Might be more keystrokes than you want....

No way of removing that message as far as I know.

I think it only shows for executables. If you have all of the shortcuts listed, then you can link to the files, with a simple text link:

i.e.:

file:///C:/Users/Scott/Desktop/test.lnk

I didn't try to store the executable.  When I Drag a shortcut off of the desktop, it runs immediately.

Yup.  The issue for gazumped is the size of the icon.  We all have our idiosyncrasies.   :)

You have a point - I was all fired up about the size of the icon because I thought stacking 30+ of these in one note is going to make for a long note;  but then I'm not going to stack 30 in one note - they'll be in separate notes of one or a few icons with my name and tags for that particular function.  Doh.

Thanks for the comments guys - though it would still be nice to have an option to lose that warning.  Please?

Actually, that's us asking. If the URL clicked is a "file:/" and the file extension is of a certain type, we prompt.

Well, whatever speed increase I had when saving annoted images, it is gone. Takes 30-60 seconds at least for each save.

@gazumped

thanks for this link - it obviously shows that this item FAVORITE bar got lost form version 4 to 5, I did not know that before. This discussion took place approx 12 months before...

But: in version 5.4.1.3895 (I used with W7 + still use W8.1) the favorite item does exist - and was gone after updating to 5.5.2.4057 !

What's going on here ?

I found the solution of my problem:

the favorites are still there but now called shortcuts and can be placed vertically or horizontally. I was confused when the fav seemed to be gone after the update.

Just installed the beta-version in order to fix some sync issues.

Is it correct that the CTRL+ALT+T functionality has been changed in this version? When using the "Assign Tags" the autocomplete only works when "Hide unassigned tags" is checked. Any reason for this or is it just a bug?

If you check the box "Hide unassigned tags" and start to enter the name of an existing tag in the "Add a new tag:" field and press enter it will autocomplete (or show a list of possible tags). So far this is the fastest way I have found to tag notes with multiple tags.

I can confirm the behavior. Not sure when this crept in; I use other means of tagging: the tag entry field at the top of a note, or the multi-select panel (when you have multiple notes selected. Both have auto-complete as well.

Like Gazumped, CTRL-ALT-T gives me a Create Tags dialog box. However, auto-complete works for me. Where do you see "hide unassigned tags?" That was removed in 5.0 and I don't see where it has returned.

The reason I don't use those two is that when they run out of space (horizontaly) for tags they switch/pop-up the "Add tags" window. And this "Add tags" windows only lets me enter one tag at a time :/

On my version (5.5.2.4057 (272057)) I get a window with the title "Assign Tags" when using the CTRL+ALT+T combination.

Auto complete does work if you are positioned in the tag list in the Assign Tags window, without Hide unassigned tags checked.

Don't know if this will help Nicco; if you begin typing when in the tag list area after Ctrl-Alt-T, hit space when the tag you want is highlighted and you can immediately begin typing for the second tag, and so on.  Quickest way I have found to assign tags.  FWIW.
