Sharing a single premium account

Recommended Posts

Can someone articulate the potential limitations I may face if I have a single premium account shared among two people on multiple platforms? In other words, I share a premium account with my wife on three W7 boxes and four iOS machines?

Is there different note locking/syncing that occurs with two different accounts vs. a single account?

I know that would mean ALL the notes and info would be shared but that's actually what we're shooting for. This would mean the only thing we would be moning to premium for would be offline notebooks.

Thanks,

Andrew

OK - in the time-honoured custom of the forum I'll answer the question with a question: why not get a premium account and a separate free account and share some or all of the premium notebooks with the free account?  You'll have separate logins and potentially can both keep irrelevant or working notes out of the 'share'.

It would be -unwise- to use the same account,  because note locking is highly unlikely to happen when the app can't tell if you just nipped up the road to do some more editing from a different machine,  or someone else is in fact using your login and pretending to be you.  It can't lock you out of a note that you're already editing!

Using two accounts at least means that account locking should work - but that's (I think) a beta option at the moment,  so make sure it is available.  Make sure also that you sync before and after every edit,  so the changes from these multiple machines remain co-ordinated.  If you're planning to do this at all you can (as a free user) share one account with your wife with editing priviledges.  You might want to do that and run a little pilot test with two free accounts to find out how well this all works before you go 'live'.

Good luck with the project - let us know how it turns out!

The only issue I see is the same as one user with multiple devices:  Potential to create conflicts if making changes to the same Note.

As long as both people do NOT try to edit Notes they did not author, you should be OK.  But this is an issue even with separate accounts and shared Notebooks.  Evernote does NOT really have real-time Note locking.  So, it is very possible for multiple users to edit the same Note at the same time.

Even though Evernote has an "Author" field, I'm not sure how reliable it is.

If I were going to do what you are, I would create tags for each user, and ALWAYS apply the tag when you create the Note.

This would allow you to easily to find all of your Notes and the other person's notes as well.

Bottom line:  Try to avoid making changes to Notes you did not create.
