Spell check is flunking the spelling bee

pleasemakeitwork

Idea

osx, en 5.3

If my spell check provider for EN text entry is Safari, please ignore this question.

If, however, EN is my spell checker within EN then .......

It is profoundly stupid. Head banging bat sh#! throw my laptop out the window stupid. Example: usa, spell checker insists on isa. Over and over again. There are many many other tone deaf examples. It makes Siri look like she got a double first.

1. How can I just turn off this thing and send it out to the backyard to play while I try to get some work done?

2. How can I teach it something?  For example, that when I type usa I intend to type usa, not any of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isa

thansk, from the isa

"usa" would get flagged in many spell checkers as it isn'a a word in English (as far as I'm aware) or the standard abbreviation for  United States of America (USA is used but I don't think, strictly speaking, it's "correct"). Have you tried typing "U.S.A."? In Safari, you can control click on "usa" and then select Learn Spelling.

Best of luck.

Sent, I apologize in advance if I have misunderstood your posting re the osx spell checker settings. Are you saying that there is no EN spell checker within EN and that the osx system-wide spell checker is what I am using when I enter text in an EN note?

That is correct.  On the Mac, I know of no other way to edit the spell check function for EN.  It has to be done system wide with the OSX Preferences.  Unless someone else can correct me.

Is the system-wide osx spell check what en uses? or is there a spell check separate and apart from the osx spell check?

I have a Forum posting from one (but just one) person telling me that there is no en spell check other than the osx system-wide spell check.

If that is true, so be it. But, I'd like to confirm  this  from others. thanks.

For bonus points: is there an official EN citation for this?  thanks again.

In my simple test, Evernote did NOT complain about "USA", but did find "usa" was misspelled.

Seems correct to me, since "USA" is an acronym which, by definition, should be ALL CAPS.  :-)

BTW, there are a number of words that when I misspell just slightly it does NOT have the correct suggested word.  All systems have their limitations.
