Web Clipper 6 for Firefox - beta

jbignert

Idea

Hi all,

We have a release candidate version for the new Firefox Web Clipper that we'd like to invite a few select people to start testing.

It is a complete re-write and doesn't share any code with the previous version so we expect some turbulence in the beginning.

When you report issues please post your OS, Firefox versions, URL where an issue can be observed and as much details as necessary for us to reproduce the problem.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Sharing

Get the latest build here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/evernote-web-clipper/versions/

And feel free to post both design & performance feedback as well as straight up bugs.

JB, thanks for the very quick and informative reply.  I had no idea that Mozilla takes 4 months just to start a review.  That seems very unreasonable.

OK, based on your statement that "the most recent versions are good. ", I'll go ahead and update to it now.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

@Igoose

Yeah this is not done yet but will be. Arrow keys will be mapped to navigate the autocomplete dropdown.

@Viv illo veith

Image clips = is in the works but not completely done yet, thanks for noticing.

PDF clips = in the works as well

Thx for sending over the Clip quality links we will add them to our testplan.

JB, I have it installed, and have read the FF Extension description, but I'm still unclear about the difference between Sending to Web vs Sending to Desktop.

Is there anything in one that is missing from the other?

Hi all,

Version 6.0 was submitted in mid November and has since then been in review at Mozilla. Needless to say they are not very fast in this process and I have no clue on how much further it may take.

You can install the 6.0 version from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/evernote-web-clipper/versions/ however if Mozilla decides to not approve it, it may be disabled until until approved.

Since updating to the latest beta, the Evernote blog has been opening as a new tab every time I open the Firefox browser. It's a little annoying! Otherwise things are working pretty well.

exact same issue here

Thx for the feedback lsmmchug,

We are looking into the reports about excessive CPU usage. We did many fixes to mitigate that already but we'll look into if we missed something with the setting 'Load tabs once they are viewed'.

Hi Jim,

Thx for reporting the issue you ran into. We've tried to reproduce the problem but cannot trigger it so I'm reaching out for some more details from you.

OS version?

Firefox version?

What type of clip are you trying to make when the error happens?

More detailed steps on what you do and when the error shows up?

If you want to create a screendump please add it to an Evernote note and share that note via URL with us here.

FYI, I also tested the extension on 2 different i7/8gb/SSD machines (from work), both with 100+ tabs open and splitted into FF groups (thus not loaded all at once, maximum 10 tabs per group), and the behavior is pretty similar to my previous report, with too much CPU usage and an unresponsive FF, sometimes with the evernote icon not even appearing in the upper bar.

A few of my colleagues tried to install the new extension on their FF, but none succeeded, with problems similar to mine or similar to other reports in this thread.

I'm afraid the extension may not pass the FF plugin validation step with those problems still there :-/

Again, I'm a web developer and can investigate or send you specific logs / profillings etc if needed.

I noticed an unusual high CPU usage for Firefox even while it is showing no tabs (only about:blank) with Web Clipper 6 installed. I switched back to 5.9.1 and the CPU usage is back to normal.

The CPU was constantly around 8-12% on a MacBook Air with i5 Ivy Bridge CPU.

So I just intalled the beta toda (2/19) and had an issue when clipping from gmail. I clipped a message with two attachments: a PDF and a Word document. The PDF opened fine from Evernote, but the Word document is completely garbled. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi all,

We pushed an update to the Beta version that we now consider release candidate. Please re-install it and give it a go and try to break it.

As always we appreciate detailed reports of issues with info like:

- FF version, OS version

- Page where the issue was observed

- Detailed steps on how to reproduce it

Sending to Web creates the clip on the Evernote Web servers and only has access to your synched notebooks. It may also take somewhat longer depending on your connection etc.

Sending to desktop creates clips in your local database within Evernote for Mac or Windows. Clips typically gets done faster and are then synced up at the next time your client syncs to the Web Service.

For this setting you can also clip to local notebooks if you desire. But we do not have suppor for tags being added in the clipper UI in this mode and there are a few other things you don't get such as related notes, sharing etc. the entire post clip dialog f.a.e will not display (it matters to some but not all...)

With Sending to desktop the process for converting HTML to ENML is also a different codebase for technical reasons (this is one reason why developing for Firefox takes longer for us because we write this code for 2 versions essentially...) and in general the clip quality is somewhat worse when clipping to desktop.

Going forward we will focus most efforts on the Sending to Web experience, so my recommendation is to use that one.

Hope that helps, feel free to follow up.

Hi all,

We've updated the beta build with a newer version with attempts at patching up the memory leak. If you have had memory problems please take a few minutes to uninstall older beta versions and install this one and let me know if it improves anything for you.

Get the Dec 10 build here:

Feedback is greatly appreciated.

OK, thanks for the detailed explanation, JB.  That was very helpful.

So, I guess I'm going with "Send to Web" based on these two statements:

. . . in general the clip quality is somewhat worse when clipping to desktop.

Going forward we will focus most efforts on the Sending to Web experience, so my recommendation is to use that one.

Hi all,

We have a early beta version for the new Firefox Web Clipper that we'd like to invite a few select people to start testing.

It is a complete re-write and doesn't share any code with the previous version so we expect some turbulence in the beginning.

When you report issues please post your OS, Firefox versions, URL where an issue can be observed and as much details as necessary for us to reproduce the problem.

Expected to work:

- Article, simplified article, full page, bookmark, screenshot clips.

- Notebook selection, tag selection, adding remarks

- We've done extensive improvements to the clip quality component so we're interested in knowing pages that it fails or can be improved.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Post clip dialog

- Native clipping component

- Sharing

- Selection clipping not implemented

- Smart filing

- Keyboard shortcuts

- Related notes on Google & other search engines

Get the build here:

Note: The beta version will NOT update to newer beta's when they become available. That has to be done manually.

And feel free to post both design & performance feedback as well as straight up bugs.

When ull update for 6 version for firefox?

Couldn't get a screen shot of it but when signing in with 2-factor authentication the message alerting me that the 6 digit code had been sent to my phone didn't display the phone number. It showed:

"... message sent to $phone$..."

Several people here in the forum already confirmed that that 6.0 build has some serious issues which increases the memory usage and turns Firefox into a slow CPU hog after a few hours of usage. I doubt that it will pass the review.

As much as I can see (using about:memory) the problem is that the web clipper creates three windows, event targets & event listeners per tab (whatever the tab is loaded or not), and causing a lot of heap allocations [that do seem like a mem leak of sorts] along the way.

The CPU usage climbs peaks to 100% in three cases - on initial launch, on oppening a new tab and when another mem allocation occurs and firefox pages out (which happens quite a lot - as I see a mem usage increase of about ~6GB after enabling the web clipper).

Edit: Here is a Firefox memory report, after enabling the web clipper and minimizing memory.

Same for me as Krunoslav said.  I haven't used the clipper at all lately, but Firefox has been freezing and crashing like crazy lately, and extremely slow. I uninstalled the clipper and it seems to be back to normal.  I'm on FF 33.1.  I also use 64-bit Firefox Nightly build, which I think is on version 37, and had the same issue - though Nightly has implemented multi-process architecture, so I was getting individual tab crashes right and left instead of the whole browser, which have stopped after uninstalling the clipper.

Yes, your account info and access will be accessible from the FireFox EN Clipper.

The first time you use it, you may have to log in to your EN account.

If I add the Web-Clipper from Firefox, wil my info from  Windows Evernote Preium transfer over from  the Firefox version? If not, what can be done?

I initally installed the beta 6.0 for Firefox. Couldn't clip a page or screen shot

Re-installed and the web clipper appears to be fully functional.

Inital impression is this is much better than the old version.  The clip quality is superior.

Hi,

Thanks for your renewed efforts to build a web clipper that could run smoothly on Firefox.

I'm running into a bug with your latest beta version at this Quora page. The "+" and "-" size selector buttons are unresponsive when I clip this page (article mode). I've tested the same thing with Chrome's web clipper and there's no bug

I'm using Firefox latest version 33.1 on Mac OS X 10.7.5.

Best regards.

Hi!

Thanks for your hard work!

Unfortunately I have some issues with the new beta:

- No thumbnails in snippet view, both Evernote desktop and web version. Occurs on all pages I have tried.

- No option to turn off related notes.

- Does not use last used notebook or smart tags, even though the settings is correct.

- Not compatible with my Firefox extension "Classic theme restorer", I have to inactivate it to see the Evernote elephant icon.

Here is an example page:

http://www.archanaskitchen.com/recipes/indian/main-course-vegetable-gravy-recipes/1195-vegetable-kofta-curry

I have FF 33.0.2

OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)

Hope these issues can be solved before you release it as final.

Best regards,

Jeanette
