Web Clipper 6 for Firefox - beta

jbignert

Idea

Hi all,

We have a release candidate version for the new Firefox Web Clipper that we'd like to invite a few select people to start testing.

It is a complete re-write and doesn't share any code with the previous version so we expect some turbulence in the beginning.

When you report issues please post your OS, Firefox versions, URL where an issue can be observed and as much details as necessary for us to reproduce the problem.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Sharing

Get the latest build here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/evernote-web-clipper/versions/

And feel free to post both design & performance feedback as well as straight up bugs.

Hello, Using firefox 36.0.4 on windows 7, i just installed the latest beta clipper 6.0.15, I am unable to see the icon for the menu bar.

If I go to customize, restore defaults, i see evernote web clipper in text, but the icon art is missing. If I try to drag this to the menu bar, it dissapears completely.  This done not happen with the standard install. Do you have any ideas of what i can do to get this back?

Firefox 34.0.5, Win 7.1, new Evernote and WebClipper user

The WebClipper installation instructions could be improved for Win users since you completely miss the step to download the xpi file.  Since the installer has already disabled any older version of WebClipper, opening a new FF tab seems pointless.  Instead, why not install the add-on directly from the add-on menu (gear icon)?

After two FF restarts, the add-on seemed to work well.

The web clipper is no longer showing up in the context menu of firefox on Mac. I've installed the latest beta from the first page of this thread and that's not working either. Suggestions?

I had the same issue under Linux. You were signed out. Click on the toolbar button, it'll ask you to log back in. After that you'll see the Evernote options in the context menu.

Firefox 31 broke some things that we're testing fixes for right now. More info and a new build coming soon.

Thank you. Please post an update here so we know that it's available to test. And please if it's not too much trouble check with Firefox 32 beta, it's already in beta stage. Usually stable and just minor updates but still please check. Thank you.

Thx, will look into the size of the icon in the Menu drop down. If possible can you post or PM a screenshot to me so that I'm sure we fix the correct instance... would be very appreciated.

Clipping to local is in development.

Thanks for the reminder. That has happened to me before and this time, like last time, the sign in area within the toolbar was greyed out and unavailable to sign in. I was able to sign in the right Evernote sidebar in google search results.

Still a lot of memory usage. I'm on Firefox 34, and when I'm using it with no web clipper, with 50 tabs open its 600 MB of memory or so. As soon as I install web caliper it goes to 1600 MB and stays there, plus everything is slow, the UI I mean. I uninstall web cliper and it's back to normal.Clearly there is some kind of issue.

Krunoslav, I switched to this as a replacement for Download Manager (S3) - seems to work fine with the Web Clipper and does basically the same stuff as Download Manager (S3).

Having tried out the Web Clipper a few times, I found an issue with selection clipping (which I think is supposed to work in this release?).  If I select text and then use the context menu to clip the selection, it works fine and sends it to my default notebook.  If I use the toolbar button and tell it to clip the selection, it creates a note with the correct title but with no text, only a .acgi file attached to it.  I tried opening that file in Notepad just for curiosity, and it appears to contain the HTML code of the entire page I was clipping from.  I tried this on several different sites with the same result.  Clipping as an article or simplified article seems to work fine, so for right now I have to clip the whole article and go in and manually delete the bits I don't want.

Another thing - I miss the way the Chrome extension would give you a link to your note after it finished clipping. This one doesn't seem to (yet, anyway), so to check on whether the clip worked correctly or add a tag I forgot, I have to keep Evernote open and keep refreshing it every time I clip something.

Strange problem with Web Clipper alpha-25, FF 33.0.1 and page https://clinthuijbers.wordpress.com/2013/09/06/ssis-powershell-script-task/. Having clicked on Web clipper icon, clipper selected article but I was not able to scroll down with mouse wheel to check selection. This behaviour is specific to this page, on other pages was not reproduced.

UPDATE - after FF restart - problem was not reproduced.

Thought the "No internet connection" thing could possibly be an interaction/conflict with another extension, so tried installing on a clean profile both on Win7/Firefox 37/64 bit and Ubuntu/Firefox 37/32 bit, but got exactly the same results :(

I'm having an issue with logging into my account using the latest (first occurred in a previous version, alpha.4 from memory, but continued when I updated to alpha.21.1) web clipper add-on.

I only noticed this after firefox updated to version ~32.0.3.

I'm not having the same issue with the full release web clipper...

Any help would be appreciated.

For me:

First of all, great work, nice to be in the same chrom* level.

I ran into multiple "No internet connectriobn" most of the time when running the ff plugin from my linux machine at work behind a webproxy. Maybe this is the reason but it's quite anoying, browsing the web and the clipper saying that you're not connected...

As gaz, i'm missing the option to customize the simplified view with my own css, remember the old 4 big buttons to change the clipper rendering ;-)

Also, can stack can be collapsible in the notebook selector?

Just my 2 cent. Any update planned that we need to apply?

Cheers

Hmm... haven't seen that in our testing. What specs does your machine have? And what FF version do you run?

Thx Loramir,

We'll take a look at the conflict with DM and see if we can resolve it on our side.

I can reproduce the selection clipping problem described and that is certainly a regression from previous version that we will fix.

Links to the note and related notes will be implemented before release so it's a work in progress.

Appreciate the report.

Tried that. Even completely removed web clippper and restarted Firefox. Then installed add-on from file and it still will not clip PDFs. But found workaround. I use Foxit Reader as my PDF Reader and its pluging for Firefox 34.0.5, so I chose  to customize toolbar in web interface and added native pluging's Evernote sharing option. While it's does not give me any sharing option, it at least let me put pdf in Evernote directly (it goes into default notebook). I wonder if it's has to do with the type of Reader I am using.

I'm using the latest web clipper and am having the same problem is the person quoted; CPU usage on OSX (very latest Mavericks) goes through the roof. I've disabled the clipper and Firefox works great again. Evernote and webclipper have been part of my workflow for many years and I hope there is a fix soon. Is anyone else still having this problem with multiple tabs open?

Latest 38 and latest web clipper from their extension site.

FYI, I also tested the extension on 2 different i7/8gb/SSD machines (from work), both with 100+ tabs open and splitted into FF groups (thus not loaded all at once, maximum 10 tabs per group), and the behavior is pretty similar to my previous report, with too much CPU usage and an unresponsive FF, sometimes with the evernote icon not even appearing in the upper bar.

A few of my colleagues tried to install the new extension on their FF, but none succeeded, with problems similar to mine or similar to other reports in this thread.

I'm afraid the extension may not pass the FF plugin validation step with those problems still there :-/

Im not really sure if it's updating automatically, it just asked my login info again (and it seems you've updated the note on the first post of this thread).
1) Is the beta being updated constantly? if so, what periodicity and how can we track that?
2)  I'm quite sure we should update manually, can you confirm?
Thanks

Link to comment

Well now that's interesting.  First the straightforward answers.

OS: 32 bit Win7 Pro

Clip type:  Article (accepted the default selection, and clicked "save"

Firefox version:  Here's where it's interesting.

I noticed the problem on Firefox Portable 32.0 (from portableapps.com).  I disabled all my other extensions and tested, and still have the problem.

Went to full installed Firefox, which was at 30.0, and the article clipped just fine.  Let it update Firefox to 31.0, and it also clips fine.  Firefox won't update past this version for some reason.  I'm wondering if the full install version is on the "extended release" cycle...

So there you have it.  There are 2 variables--Firefox version, and portable vs. full install.  (For the record, I've never had problems with Evernote running on the portable Firefox.)

Thanks for working on this.

They don't even care. We (Firefox users) are waiting for so long for a proper extension and we keep getting buggy 'betas'. After 1.5 months with the last horribly buggy extension they gave us a new completely broken one. Pretty sure they didn't even test it.

You show no respect to your customers. That's pure trolling, not something you should expect from professionals.

Well, just tried alpha 20, and I still have the problem clipping the previously linked wordpress page, using Portable Firefox 32.0 as before. I expect you already know that, though.  It's obvious you've been working on it, as now instead of the Evernote blog opening with Firefox, the problem page opens.  Hope others don't mind a dose of scientific Python programming!

(firenote-Sept-10\resources\firenote\lib\ui.js line 129 was left uncommented by devs, prompting the tab to open.)

Hi krunoslav,

I haven't properly updated the text in the original post that links to the beta version and that mentions what's not implemented yet. My bad.

Going over your list everything on the list is implemented except sharing which will come in the next release version.

You do need to uninstall older beta versions and re-install the never ones manually to get the updates.

Several people here in the forum already confirmed that that 6.0 build has some serious issues which increases the memory usage and turns Firefox into a slow CPU hog after a few hours of usage. I doubt that it will pass the review.

It's true. The FF is famous catch or off suddenly when opening many tabs, especially with that add-on (web clipper), that lets slow. I think Chrome is the future of the browsers.

I iust installed FF web clipper 6.0 beta.2. It works fine once or twice and then becomes nonfunctional. If I quit FF and restart the clipper then works again - once or twice and then stops again. This is incredibly annoying and time consuming! When it stops working the clipper box opens up but even though it shows "clip article" the web page i am on does not show the article selected.

Should I go back to a 5.9 version?

OK, another piece of information.  The link below gives me the same error I mentioned previously, using the same Firefox & OS versions.

I'm not an HTML/web programming expert, but I can see that both sites seem to be Wordpress based.  Maybe a dev will be able to find the specific, common link between them.

1) can't take screenshot clips (is this still under dev?) even though I can select the area, after mouse release the shot does not show up to edition and upon saving I get "Error: invalid arguments"
2) not sure if it's only w me but the Evernote Google results (how do you call that feature again?) now has a white background vs a black in the past. I preferred the black much more, not sure if this is a new design or just a bug

Hi.  Different clippers in different browsers have different capabilities,  based on how easy it is to achieve certain operations in the mini operating system that runs the browser's add-ins.  Chrome is a complete OS in itself,  so has the most functionality.

Erico,

I go back and forth.  In fact, I'm posting this from Chrome (a Chromebook, actually).  Chrome does do well for some things, but then I go back to Firefox for certain extensions.  Firefox also seems to be better for privacy reasons.

No need to apologize for your opinion :-)

The thing is, we use the best option we can, and some of us think it's Firefox. Some may not be able to use any other browser due to computer permissions or other reasons, and have to use Firefox.

Either way, it doesn't matter. Firefox may not be the most popular browser out there, but it is very popular. And I believe this is why Evernote supports it.

Anyhow - enjoy Chrome/Chromium :-)

Mike,

That page is one I linked to a few posts up, because it causes problems with my Firefox (Portable) 32.0.  (The previous alpha version opened the evernote blog.)

I dug into the code, and found a block of links labeled "use cases".  Obviously, the developers are using them to test functionality.  The line with my link in it is uncommented in the latest Sep 10 version.  It is kind of annoying, but it's the price of trying a pre-release version.  I'm sure that will be fixed in the final release.

While it's open, can you try to clip it in Article mode?  The Sep 10 version has problems with FF Portable 32.0, but works in 31.1.

Beyond personal preference, Firefox offers special addons that I can't find alternatives for in Chrome There are other reasons as well. Besides. Firefox is the only browser that has full color management support, if Chrome ever gets it let me know. In the meantime I will use Firefox. I have wide gamut monitor and it's unusable without color managed applications.

Hi all,

We pushed an update to the Beta version that we now consider release candidate. Please re-install it and give it a go and try to break it.

As always we appreciate detailed reports of issues with info like:

- FF version, OS version

- Page where the issue was observed

- Detailed steps on how to reproduce it

Unless I'm missing something, how can it be considered release candidate when it's little more than clearly. still missing, pretty much all the functionality of Chrome. As you wrote yourself.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Post clip dialog

- Native clipping component

- Sharing

- Selection clipping not implemented

- Smart filing

- Keyboard shortcuts

- Related notes on Google & other search engines

When can we expect the same functionality as the one in Chrome?

<Sigh> Much better layout and it worked first time for me - but I seem now to have lost the option to save a clip to the desktop client rather than the web client.  Any chance that will come back?  It's a bit pivotal for me in that when I clip bookings and meeting details I don't want to have to sync before I can edit the note.  It's not (usually) a long wait,  but if I'm setting up several meetings I have to sync several times to process each note in turn.  It adds up.

So, I managed to get around the "No internet connection" issue by booting my profile in the release version of Firefox, signing into the evernote extensions there, then going back to Firefox 37 with the same profile. Looks like there is some issue in the latest Firefox version with the code that checks for an internet connection. This is the only extension I'm having any issues with in Firefox 37

At least I can start testing the extension now - looks good so far! :)

Moved this topic to the Web Clipper forum to make it public and added latest beta build dated July 2.

I just added the evernote link on the OP to my notes, I'm expecting Evernote to warn me whenever you update the file, would  that work or are you changing the shared note every time?

(My end goal here is simply be using the last available beta everytime, since there's no auto-update)

I disagree. I have reagurally open up to a 100 tabs in a browser (Firefox) and there is no issues. Even Clearly and older verion of web clipper work fine, only the new one clearly has memorry issues.

The CPU is not really the problem its the memorry and generaly slugishess after install. And it is slow no matter if you are clipping or not.

Thanks for the added details. I tested against the latest FF Clipper build (June 26) and article detection was spot on.

It may be that you have earlier beta version so I've updated the link in the OP with the latest build. If possible please confirm that this build performs better also for you. You will have to do a uninstall - reinstall....

that did it, thanks. Maybe you could post a small note here (new post) as updates happen so the users that are subscribed get a heads up (also when major changes happen you could also include them on it). I don't want to create more work for you but could really help us beta test.

Just noticed something, when editing the Fx toolbar the clipper icon changes to a larger text button, something small but not sure if you were aware

Thx for the feedback.

Thank you for working on this - the beta client looks fantastic and the new features are extremely helpful - being able to edit elements of the clip directly in the clipper is a real time-saver.

Issue: I've just downloaded and it seems as though there is no longer the ability to clip directly on a clipped youtube video image and be connected directly to that video.  Let's say you have a blogpost with an embedded video, or if you're on YT itself, the page will clip properly but previously you could click the image grab that represented the video in EN and be directed to that video.  It would be useful to have this back.

@jbignert  Dittoing the issue stefanwrobel is seeing. After upgrading to the newest beta I see no way of turning off simultaneous search.

And the simultaneous search is driving me crazy!!

Evernote employees, just curious - are you able to "see" the number of users who enable or disable that "feature"? Is it actually popular? Or does it default to ON and there are just a large percentage of people who can't figure out how to turn it off? I'm truly sort of curious about the percentage of users who may actually like that feature.

Have a look around the forums for similar problems - lots of small things may affect this; restart the system,  empty the trash notebook,  check whether you can see web pages in IE (it shares the same connection route).  Worst case,  uninstall and reinstall Evernote (backup your database,  but don't remove it..)..

Only jbignert could say for sure, but at a guess, "general release" for Firefox would be a functional release that can be used by the general public.

Although I'm sure that they're aiming to put as many features into the Firefox clipper as are in the Chrome clipper, they're currently trying to get out a version that people can use at all on Firefox. There's no "contract" for them to provide parity with Chrome on first release; indeed, he's pointed out the items that will be missing for that release, but presumably will be added over time.

I tried removing all extension and keep only Evernote web clipper - didn't helped. Then I tried creating new Firefox profile and under this, Evernote addon started working. Then I switched back to my default profile and in process lost all my opened tabs (not intentionally). But after this, Evernote web clipper started working under my old profile with all extensions enabled… So… Could the big amount of opened tabs (cca 100) in many groups be the problem? It was only difference I noticed.

I like the look and feel of the clipper a lot!!  I have run into two problems so far.

1.  When I first tried to log in on the clipper I got a "No Internet Connection" message which was not correct. I did a second restart of Firefox and had no problem. This is just regular login with Username and Password.

2.  This clip has some issues. Note link: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s30/sh/38b8ca3d-913e-4098-a975-23189fccffaa/9736291a16a7eba350d8423d0a6c6d86.

Steps were:

  1. Website: http://rootsnursery.com/wp-content/uploads/starting-seeds-indoors.jpg
  2. Opened Clipper. It showed that it was clipping the whole page.
  3. Used Minus Sign at top of clipper. It showed that it was clipping the white area.
  4. Added a note to test the note function.
  5. You can see the odd result.

Also checked to see if I could right click on the image to save the image to Evernote but it looks like there is no right functionality yet with this clipper installed.
