Tagging on Evernote Mac

TechBarber

Idea

Overall, I'm generally quite pleased with the functionality of EN on various platforms. The one "nit" I have to pick though, is with the tagging system for EN Mac.

When using the Windows client I can easily add tags by right clicking in the sidebar. If I click on the tag "House" for example, EN knows to nest my new tag under "House" and on I go.

On the Mac it's a completely different story. Instead of adding/removing tags from the sidebar on the fly, I have to go into an entirely different screen which is extremely tricky and confusing to navigate. I realize this may be a matter of opinion but the way that tag screen works is not intuitive and I'm constantly clunking my way around.

I store all of my notes in a "Quick Notes" notebook and I eventually process the notes in batches by sending them to their respective tag/notebook. On the Mac this is a nightmare because I'm constantly toggling back and fourth from the main window to that awful "tags" section which makes organising notes a tedious and frustrating exercise.

That's my one main gripe with EN - the awful tagging screen on the Mac.

It's been month's that I've felt this way and it was time to get that off my chest. That feels so much better!

I agree.

I find the tag screen to be very unpleasant (I have commented on this at length over the last couple of years). It is particularly bad if you join the notebook of some nutty tagger. We can have up to 10,000 tags and some people seem to want to use them all. The entire screen fills up and it is hopeless to navigate. Finally, you can only see a partial view of your tags in the main screen with your note -- you have to use the arrow key to wander through them. Your complaints, as well as mine, have all been voiced before, but I think in this case it was decided that a separate screen would de-clutter the interface (at least, that is my take on why the sidebar lost its functionality). They are right! But, I happen to have a different philosophy about information :)

I should mention that  I am not much of a tag person (as some of you may know), not because I have anything against them -- I just haven't needed them in my workflow.

I think I could sum up my complaints by saying that the app lacks information density (I know, I use this term a lot). A single glance tells me very little about what I want to know (page count, tags, etc., etc.).
