PerUser install by another user: abort - Version 5.1.0.2217

Recommended Posts

I am having the "PerUser install by another user: abort" issue -- with the recent version (5.1).  I created a support ticket several days ago now and no word yet, and I am a business and premium user.  I'd be totally dead in the water except for the web interface and my mobile apps - but I am a heavy user and those are not as useful as the native windows client because I do a lot of file related things.

I have gone thru all the various forum entries and tried them all as best I could (revo, regedit, etc..) but I still get the error.   Bellow is the EvernoteSetup.log entry.  Has anyone else had the issue in the Evernote 5.x time frame and have a more recent fix. All I could find were in the 4.x issues.

This is now day 5 and I have not received any communication from Evernote support.  Each day I contact them via chat and am told that it is in the hands of a level 2 and that they will update the ticket.  I will continue to do so, as there is no recourse.  I have tried everything on the forum.

Frankly I am amazed and discouraged. I love the product, and I have built my entire professional life around it, and I now cannot use it properly, and I am getting no support... not even a courtesy update.

Another day and no contact.  I asked the chat support yesterday if there was an escalation mechanism in cases like this.  The reply was no.  When it is pasted to the level 2 support that is "escalated".  There are no managers or any of the usual way to escalate.  I am again amazed at this.

I once again scanned the forums for any clues.  Retied what I can find.  The version of Evernote.msi is in the user\local\temp location -- when I tied to execute it, it actually starts the process, but stalls and says the msi is not valid.  I tried to find another version of the msi, but so far no luck.

I'm now trying to decode the Evernote.log file and see if I can find a clue.

I have finally gotten past the per-user install error.  I combed the registery, 1st redoing the suggestions on the formum (nothing found now), searching for the full product codes in the EvernoteSetup.log. This found several entries that I deleted (after yet another registry backup).  Then searching for Evernote*.   Then reboot.

That worked.  No longer get that error.

So I have moved on to the next level of error's, also discussed in the forum:

"Error reading from file C:\users\username\AppData\local\Temp\Evernote.msi. Verify that the file exists and you access it."

In the EvernoteSetup.log the last entry is "Installation failed: (.\Bootstrapper.cpp:915) 0x643:Fatal error during installation."

- It does exist.

- Check all folder permissions, etc. and all are good.

So, per another suggetion on the forum, I tried to execute that file (.msi) directly.

Same errors.

Moved the Evernote.msi to another folder.

Error: "The installer has encountered an unxpected error installing this package. May indicate a problem with this package. The error code in 2203.

Error in the EvernoteSetupMSI.log: "MSI © (A8:64) [07:48:12:289]: Product: Evernote v. 5.1 -- Installation failed. MSI © (A8:64) [07:48:12:290]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Evernote v. 5.1. Product Version: 5.1.0.2217. Product Language: 0. Manufacturer: Evernote Corp.. Installation success or error status: 1603."

I have re-downloaded the product several times and this same error condition exists.

Evernote support contacted with a suggest solution today, and it worked.  I'm grateful to the support person, excited to have full functionality back, but very disconcerted with Evernote the company.  My problem in various forms has been all over the forum going back to 4.x.  An timely response would have solved more than a week of unhappiness.

The suggestion is posted below for any with a similar issue.  The clues were there -- it was a permission problem, I just did not know the right ones to give to what. So the solution was trivial (as things sometimes are).  Again I am grateful to Korben in support and understand he is not personally accountable for the delay.

The "fix" (I had done the method 2 to no avail before, but I did them in the suggested sequence)

Method 1: Follow the steps below and check if it helps.
Go to Start.
Type %temp% in the search box and then click the Temp folder item that appears at the top.
At the top of the Explorer window, in the address bar, click the folder to the left of Temp in the folder path (Local by default).
In the folder list, right-click the Temp folder and then click Properties and then click the Security tab.
Click the Edit button and on the next screen click Add.
On the next screen, in the large text window type Everyone and then click Check Names - Everyone should then be underlined.
Check the box for Full control under the Allow column, and then click OK, then OK again, and OK again to close all the windows.

Method 2:
Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer.

a. ClickStart, click Run, type “msiexec /unregister” (without quotes), and then clickOK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.
b. ClickStart, click Run, type “msiexec /regserver” (without quotes), and then clickOK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs, or you may briefly see an hourglass. After you run this command, the operation is complete.
c. Try to install the programs you wish to install and check.

Thank you for posting the fix.  I've had unrelated problems with another updated Windows 8 app that were also down to folder permission problems.  Don't know why this sort of issue is arising with software that has worked before - even if that was in previous versions.  Glad you found a resolution anyway.

David, I'm glad you finally installed Evernote. However, if the message is "Already installed by another user....", then that seems to indicate another version is present.

I tried your two methods and they didn't do a thing. This should be an easy problem for Evernote to fix. After all, they caused the problem by creating an install process that failed.

Installs fail for a variety of reasons.

From what I can see, David got past the "installed by another user" issue.

I have finally gotten past the per-user install error.

If you are having the "installed by another user" problem, using the search function, it has been posted many times on the board to use Revo uninstaller.  If that doesn't work for you, then please submit a support ticket.

I still have this "installed by another user" issue.

I removed the .msi once, then could not update. Now I'm stuck with the issue again.

I have just about given up on Evernote.

I have (finally) found the fix and will post the instructions below.  The original can be found here.

http://tpsconsulting.blogspot.com/2014/05/evernote-peruser-install-by-another.html

My instructions are for Windows 8 (8.1) but obviously this works for Vista and 7

Ok here we go.

The first thing you are going to need to do is sign in to the administrator account of windows. This is a hidden account used basically for this exact problem and should NEVER be used on a routine basis. Once you are done with the repair you should be turning it off.

Right click on the start menu and choose Command Prompt (Admin)

Now type the following:

net user administrator /active:yes

if you get an error message it is because you forgot to add the space after "administrator" yes, there is a space there!

once this is done you can type 'exit' and return or simply close from the window X

Now sign out of your account and sign in to the newly created administrator. Give it a minute to do the initial setup of your desktop as this will be something it has never done before.

Once you are in to the desktop, go and download/install REVO uninstaller (Free will work but they give you 30 days free with the Pro one so I suggest using that--you can uninstall this program once you have completed this uninstall anyway)

Run the Revo uninstaller program and if you have not already uninstalled Evernote do so by right clicking on that icon in the programs list and UNINSTALL.
If you have already uninstalled evernote then it should not appear in the program list. In this case type the word  evernote in to the search and it will then find any instance of it and you can RIGHT CLICK on it and choose uninstall.  You will want to select all and then delete. This will remove all registry entries.

Once you have done this close the program and restart the computer. Go back in to the administrator account and start REVO uninstaller again and scan for evernote. If you have removed everything then it shouldn't find anything and if it does then RIGHT CLICK and choose uninstall and SELECT ALL and DELETE.  Continue to do this if necessary.. I only had to do it once and when I restarted everything that was EVERNOTE was gone.

Once EVERNOTE no longer appears in the search of REVO, close the program.

Now go ahead and install EVERNOTE while still in the administrator account. Be sure to choose ADVANCED option and then you will have the option to choose INSTALL FOR ALL USERS.
You can also choose your location of the installation. (Since I have two hard drives, my D drive is my location as I keep my Windows Drive on C.)

Once EVERNOTE is installed, SIGN OUT of the administrator account and sign in to your account.

Now RIGHT CLICK on the START menu and choose Command Prompt (Admin)

Now type the following:

net user administrator /active:no

if you remembered the space after the administrator you should not have an error and you should be good to now type EXIT or click on the Windows X to close that.

You have now turned off the admininstrator account and you have successfully installed the latest version of EVERNOTE.

I followed the instructions from various posts but I am still stuck on the "already installed by another user" error. I ran REVO Uninstaller as my normal user account to try and fix the first problem (which was the classic "cannot find the .msi" file). Zapped everything in the registry and then I got the "already installed by another user" error. I tried logging in as Administrator and running REVO but REVO no longer sees anything Evernote related in the registry. I even tried removing Web Clipper and Stitch with I both use -- no joy. I am a premium customer, I opened a ticket on Friday. Ticket # is: 741720. I have EN running on all my other platforms so I can at least access my data. Happy to try anything that might get EN back on my Win7 machine....

If you've already followed all the procedures I can only urge you to go through it all again - I had a recent experience with Windows 8 where it took half-a-dozen reinstalls to get a working version,  and my support ticket is still going through..  One thing I suggest you try first - and I emphasise that this is NOT supported by Evernote - is to run Glary Utilities (free) 'one click fix' which performs a variety of checks on windows systems and may help with any remaining registry keys.  I've used it,  and it seems to have helped sort out my issues.  Watch the install and the options carefully though - there are sometimes suggestions to set different search engines or home pages which you can easily opt out of.

gazumped -- you are my new hero! Downloaded Glary Utilities -- ran it -- it cleaned up a bunch of reg errors and few other things. Whatever it did -- I now have my 500+ Evernote notes back on my desktop. Many thanks. And in appreciation of the repair work that GU did I am going to send them a check as well. I will now turn my attention to upgrading my other machines that seem to have the same "missing .msi" problem .

Many thanks again.

OMG thank you very much davidgburch for the detailed fix instructions.  I suspect that my temp dir permissions played a part, but it was the /unregister and /regserver that fixed it for me -- and I didn't find that ANYWHERE else.  Wow.  Glad this is still helpful in 2016 trying to recover a 6.0.6 install so that I can upgrade to 6.1.x...
