(Archived) Evernote emptied all the text from my file, than saved.

Recommended Posts

So, I've been an evernote user for a couple months now and I've been using it a lot. But today something happened and I'm not very happy about it.

I had a 15.000 word story saved on there and I simplified the layout to smooth out some copied text and evernote happily erased every word in the file after which it was like: Oh, you made some changes, I will save this right now for you.

I had 10.000 words backup but a full day worth of work has gone down the drain.

It's most likely not retrievable which I can live with, it's just another day working I guess, but maybe someone should be noted because it's something that I think should be fixed.

Oh also, what did I do wrong?

What client are you using?

Do you have a recent backup?

Did you check note history (premium account feature)?

I'm using evernote on windows 8 and iPod touch, but this happened on the windows 8.

I have lost about 1/3 of what I was working on, like I said: I had a 10.000 word backup so I lost 5000 words.

I am not a premium member so I can't use that future. However, I don't want to have to pay for a free service to work. Of course premium has better features and such, but I do expect evernote to work, even though I"m not paying them as of now.

Are you using the web client on Win 8 or the Win 8 client?  If you're using the Win client & it's not sync'd, you may be able to retrieve the original from the web client.  Or if you have a backup of your exb file, you may be able to retrieve parts of the notes from that.

Premium would cost you $5/month.  Those 5,000 words may not be work $5 to you & that's ok.  When you say you expect "free service to work", well, it probably is.  I don't know what happened but I do know EN is not in the business of randomly deleting their users' notes.

No, I know, it didn't delete the note itself, it only cleared the whole text I had written in the note after I clicked on: simplify the layout.

Don't worry, I'm not attacking EN or something, I just wanted to ask if someone knew about this and what I did wrong.

And yes I might have been a tiny tiny bit annoyed, but that's just because I worked hard and now it's gone. It's not a problem. I just wondered what went wrong.

I find that Windows has a 'feature' that attacks me from time to time - if I get a bit careless on the keyboard it's possible to highlight some or all of your text either when trying to just to highlight one word,  or just by hitting the Shift Ctrl and UParrow keys at the wrong moment.  If I don't realise what happened and stop immediately,  the next thing I type is the only word I'll have on the screen!  Then there's that breathless WTF moment as everything goes blank..  until you realise and Ctrl-z things back.

I don't say that's what happened to you - no-one can really tell you unless there was a camera running in the background somewhere.  I find from long experience the most productive thing in these circumstances is to spend a brief moment in contemplation of the infinite wonders of the Universe,  swear like a trouper and start fixing whatever happened.

All of the above is one reason why I use a word-processor to prepare longer documents,  even if I cut and paste the text into Evernote later - you can incrementally (and usually automatically) save changes and revert them easily if they happen.
