Dark Theme/Dark Mode

Recommended Posts

I just now updated Evernote to the latest version. And I'm either going to find an alternative to Evernote or.... maybe go mildly insane? This white on light gray on off white on.... whatever is horrid for me. I would give anything to go back a version. Wow. Evernote, PLEASE give us options. Or something. Anything!

My eyes are bleeding as well. Thank you for bringing this up. Also, apart from the glare, it's more intelligent to visually separate the workspace (the note) from the warehouse (the lists). It was perfect before.

Please, bring back the dark look for the list of notebooks.

I found a site that allows you to download previous versions of Evernote. I was able to restore to the previous version on my Mac by deleting the existing Evernote app in my applications folder, and then installing the one I found on this site: http://evernote.en.uptodown.com/mac/old

It even kept all my notes! I'm not sure if there's an option for Windows as well, but I thought I'd share this in case it helps anyone.

Add me to the list of people who want a darker theme. Especially now, with 6.0.1 being "optimized for Yosemite." Ouch, I can barely look at it!

Ideally, we'd get a choice of three or four themes, such as the way most ebook readers work, or reading in the Instapaper app. I don't actually want a "night" style dark theme just something that tones down the extreme whiteness of the current theme.

Just installed the new update for OS X and I am speechless. First Skype and now this… have you guys fired your UX designers? In what world is having 50 shades of extremely light gray an improvement over the old theme?

Hi,

ouch, I just installed the new update, it's very hard all this white... gray..., difficult to see items.. and to find the window quickly under others...

it's impossible for me with Yosemite to re-install older version :(

please, a dark theme would be very appreciate

I complained about this last week when I was using 6.0.1. Today I updated to 6.0.2 because one of the improvements is supposedly "better legibility." I took a screenshot of the before and after updating to 6.0.2. There is ZERO perceptible difference. (This is on a high quality and calibrated Dell U2410 monitor.)

PLEASE FIX THIS. And consult some real users, not just a handful of fan boys.

I just registered to speak up for this request. The color scheme of Evernote 5.x (the version before Evernote 6) was easy to navigate and find information. Now I updated to Evernote 6, everything blends together in an unnatural way. Not just the overly brightened color, the information hierarchy, which I depend on to quickly manage and view my notes, has gone. Now I have to pay extra attention that I did not have to.

Please fix this!

I agree, please add an option for customized themes/skins. I absolutely hate the all white/very light grey theme.

I totally agree. Provide base themes / skins, but let the end-user get it how they might like. Let Evenote on all platforms be themed / skinned to the user's desire. As others have stated different color combinations work well for different people. What works for one, simply is off-putting for others.

Having the ability to change the colors within Evernote, would be a first step, with a "Restore Default" button (must). But then extend it using CSS/LESS or similar markup would be outstanding. Furthermore, even the ability to customize the responsiveness of the note layout would be very easy to come along for the ride.

Please fix the light / grey on grey - it is hard on the eyes.

I was recently forced to update Evernote to the latest version. Without a choice or a warning. And I hate the white view. Where is the green and the brown color for the notebooks. And I don't think this new version is faster or more reliable. Yesterday, I couldn't see my notes the moment I really need them.

I find it incredible that after all of us ask for a dark theme, you come up with a design that is even whiter and more jarring on the eyes. What do you call your new design, White Supremacist?

I spend my days working in Android Studio and Xcode using a dark theme. I have blond hair and blues eyes and guess what, when I go outside in the sun, I have to wear sunglasses because light skinned people have a tendency towards being sensitive to bright light.

Do I need a note from my doctor to convince you?

Can't you please give us an option. Is this too hard for your developers?

Add me to the list requesting this. I'm now having to work in Byword or Ulysses, (both of which have dark themes) then copying the notes into Evernote for storage. (I also use 'brightness slider' app and or 'nocturne.'

Some of us over 50, with ageing eyes, find the glare too much. Youngsters needn't feel smug - they're damaging their eyes far earlier in life than my generation. Optometrists are warning of of increasingly early incidence of cataract as a result of early exposure to screens.

Link to comment

Pretty sure this is going to happen eventually... seems like it would be pretty easy. But functionality is probably priority at this point.

Adobe has gone more dark over the years with alot of their design products and it's really helped me. I remember them saying that it was easier on the eyes; I figure they have a pretty good handle on designing so I'll take their word for it.

But, man, the current color scheme looks really slick, modern, and clean so it pains me a bit to have to +1 a different scheme.

The design and color scheme for Yosemite is hugely regressive if you ask me. Flatter and paler isn't necessarily better, just different. It seems to me they're just going for "different" because they don't know where else to go. If Steve Jobs were alive he'd never approve of the look of Yosemite.

Check out the difference between the color picker in Mavericks (and previous) and Yosemite. This is the standard color picker, not just Evernote:

Apple-color-picker-fail.png

Seriously, Apple? You think the one on the right looks better? And Evernote just falls in line with this new hard-to-read white-on-white theme. Is no one doing usability testing anymore?

I agree this new color picker is horrible. Helloooo 1974!  I love the 3-D look of the icons, buttons and other aspects of the Mavericks interface. I'm truly not getting why designers are opting for a juvenile, flat, texture-less look. Edges are difficult to discern, not to mention it's not as intuitive an interface when graphic representations of things don't look like the *actual* thing anymore.

Speaking of Steve Jobs, (and totally off-topic) have you seen some of the new releases of software such as iMovie and Numbers? I swear, iMovie is like an entirely different program. I get that you want to make improvements and changes, but how about you make them on an incremental basis, and not make your newest release feel like something we've never seen before? Also I have a huge beef with Numbers now too... there used to be a left-side pane where you could see a tiny representation of EVERY table on your worksheet. I have worksheets with up to six tables on one sheet, and it used to be so easy to locate a table before. Just look in the left-side pane and click on the table you wanted and it would jump you right to it, no matter where it was on the worksheet.

NOW... in the newest release of Numbers, that pane is GONE. So now when I'm working on a worksheet and I need to jump to a different table on the same sheet, I literally have to drag the vertical and horizontal sliders back and forth, up and down SEARCHING for the other table I need. It's ridiculous. I'm sure that functionality to "jump" to any table is still there somewhere, but it's buried so deep in some menu that I haven't yet found it. Stupid stupid stupid change. Again it makes me wonder if the developers actually USE the products they work on or just make changes for the sake of making changes.

+1 for a dark theme

I used to use coda for programming, but now I'm using sublime text. By default its dark and it's much more comforting to the eyes.

In real application we use paper and pen to take notes, but this is digital content there isn't any product constraint.

We shouldn't use white metaphorically to replace the paper, because ours eyes are suffering.

6.0.3 came out this morning, also promising "improved readability" or whatever. Minimal difference. In a before-after screenshot comparison the only difference I see is that the top toolbar (where the "< >" buttons are, the sync indicator, "New Note" button, etc, are) is a bit darker.

We still need more separation of the items in the Snippet view, and more separation between the Snippet view sidebar and the main note view (by adding color/darkness to the snippet view part).

I found a solution (works for mac)

I have another computer with an older version of evernote (5.5.1)

I put the 6th one to the trash, with preferences and all I found who belong to evernote.

Then I just made a copy of the old app and paste it in my Applications directory and it works fine.

Dark theme please. Or a theme which consists of more colors than 95% white, 97% white & 100% white.

I have EN on two computers and my phone. Thankfully, one computer is not on auto-update and is still on 5. I thought I'd accidentally updated it to 6 and I audibly yelled, "no! no! no!" in my office.  Not the reaction you want to your product.

I am getting a nice tan from 6's new brightness.

Link to comment

Ew, I don't like black themes, white strains my eyes but dark background with white text is harder to read and strains it even more.

the one true way to go is SOLARIZED themes. Evernote should give us the feature to theme however we want our notes. (Even OneNote from Microsoft has more colours but they have horrible sync)

Link to comment

+1 for a darker theme option! Come on Evernote, please!

I have just updated to version 6.x and I am already considering moving from Evernote. Have you guys at Evernote tested the new theme on a 24" monitor? It is so bright that I can switch the lights off. May be on a smartphone or tablet this amount of white is ok, but this is exactly the kind of UI colors I've been trying to avoid on a computer for years.

Why a flat design should be white? You don't have to go "all black", but please do something!

Link to comment

I just want to reiterate that hardly anyone wants a "black" theme, or even a really dark theme. What we're asking for is just a less blinding bright theme. As in, a normal amount of visual contrast.

One other thing; a few people in here have suggested various workarounds involving monitor settings, display preferences, etc. That's all rather silly, as Evernote is ONE application out of many that we use. I for one (and I suspect most agree) am not going to re-set my monitor just because ONE of my applications is burning my eyes.

My monitor is carefully calibrated for photography. I'm not going to ruin the display of everything else just to calm down my Evernote. I'm more likely to stop using Evernote.

BTW, there was an update this morning (6.0.5) that stated "better contrast on toolbar" as one of the improvements. It does seem slightly better. But it could still be a whole lot better.

Finally, what really kills me is that it seems like Evernote doesn't do any usability testing, or if they do, they don't do it well. How can they make a huge change in how it appears to all users without testing it on a variety of users? (Testing on fan-boys and fan-girls does not count, because they will love everything.) Get it together, Evernote, and do some REAL usability testing before you make such changes!

This was at the top of google for 'dark theme evernote' soo... bump :)

Used because bright hurts my eyes, esp at night! Also, i'm a developer and use a dark theme .. so when I copy+paste, all the text is ridiculously bright that i can't see it! Like this:

As a night-owl it really puts a strain on the eyes if 90% of the screen is a bright white light.

I also use Sublime Text with a nice dark color palette which allows me to code a lot longer without getting red eyes.

I'm not suggesting to replace the default bright scheme (it's perfectly fine during the day), but an optional dark theme one could switch to when working in a dim-lit environment would be nice. ^_^

+1,

I use EN in my ipad in a  quite dark classroom. for avoid disturbing my classmates' eyes (and mines too), and reduce battery consumption, I put the brightness down.
A dark theme will be excellent for me.
Thanks!
ps: yes, the accessibility option in the iOS is an option too. But if EN had this option like a switch it will be better.

+ 1 for Dark theme.

Since version 6, it became even more painful than it was before. And in addition I just change screen and it is even more violent (even by decreasing the brightness and contrast)

On Windows, I open less client to read my notes, I prefer to go through the browser (Opera/Firefox/Chrome) because there I can change the skin.

In Word (Office 2013), I can stay a long time on a document I displays the page in black and when I share the document, I was rocking the white. It is the only way to not to suffer terrible headaches after a while.

OneNote does not have a dark Theme, but allows you to toggle the display of page in colors 'pastel', that is much less aggressive. I do not understand that despite all the queries, and as someone has already said, it does not offer us a darker theme, but in addition, it makes even more white former!

I think that if many Premium customers are demanding this possibility, Evernote should listen to them. My annual subscription ends January 15, and I wonder.

(Sorry for my poor English. It's my first post on this forum, especially for this request)

A dark theme would be great. It seems like a lot of people like dark themes and a lot of people like brighter themes. I use sublime text and PHPStorm and prefer dark themes because of staring at the screen so much myself, but users should have the option to select which they prefer. Basically, every application I use is darker except Outlook express and Evernote which don't have user configurable options. It would be a huge plus to have theme support. That way the user can choose one they prefer or create their own scheme and everybody wins.

I too would like a dark theme

If Evernote cannot see the need for some themes/skins then they might like to consult with an eye specialist and ask for a list of chronic eye conditions which are affected by black text on bright white - or just look at any ereader from Kindle, Kobo etc.

And whilst they're at it do something about this forum.

My pseudo dark theme for EN:

1. Create a note with whatever background color you want (I went with a light grey): How To Change Evernote Background Color or Image

2. color codes here: HTML color codes

3. right click on note and copy to notebook to create duplicate (can copy to whatever notebook you want the new note to be in). Just keep a blank note with your desired background color as a 'template' to copy whenever you wish to create a new note with the darker background

4. The above takes care of the note background, but the notes list background is still white. I stumbled into a solution for this. In changing the Win7 theme to a dark theme (Dark Pearl in this case), the EN notes list background is now grey. Perfect! Well, almost perfect - this would all be better integrated if it was a native EN theme, but this is a good-enough-for-now substitute until EN shifts focus from mugs, bags and desktop trinkets back to the app.

Thanks for that, tavor, but I wouldn't call it "Perfect." If you have to change your Windows theme (and thus the theme for every application you run) just to make Evernote acceptable, then that's a case of the tail wagging the dog.

It's Evernote's responsibility to make their product friendly and usable.

While I agree with the sentiment, given Libin's recent publicly stated shift in company focus away from personal information mgmt to business use, I would imagine that features like dark themes (which is much less useful in a brightly lit office at noon than a dimly lit home at midnight) are on the backburner.
Link to comment

Well, I use Evernote in a brightly lit office and at home (but not at midnight) and the current theme bothers me in both circumstances.

And let's get something straight folks: most people are not asking for some kind of midnight style "dark theme." What most people want is a "slightly darker" theme. As in, the current theme but with a bit more visual separation between the various elements, the way it used to be until recently. I'm not sure what it currently looks like in Windows, but since Yosemite came out it's effectively "white on white" on a Mac.

I have no expectation that EN are going to provide a "dark" theme. But a lot of people want something more usable, and it wouldn't be a big stretch to provide it!

For users of the classic Evernote WEB-BASED (in your browser) version, I've created a dark (or, at least, darker) theme for it using a user style sheet.  I discuss that in a thread here on the Evernote discussion board over in the Web topic:

https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/81810-evernote-web-classic-with-less-eyestrain/

Here's a screen shot of it in action (you can easily change the pale green to whatever you wish):

I just scanned through the NINE PAGES of comments about this request (which in itself seems like a solid enough reason to say that there is cause for adding the feature). As I did so, there were repeated questions of "Why?" and many vague responses, but none of them seemed to cite a particular underlying cause for the discomfort of using the bright white version currently available...

Well, I have a medical reason - cataracts. As a result of having this hazy film in the lenses of my eyes, any light that enters them becomes painful, and the more bright my screen is the harder it is to use. Although I will ultimately need to have surgery to remove the cataracts, in the interim I must find ways to vastly reduce the brightness of my screen without sacrificing contrast.

For many applications, there are built-in dark themes (or controls for customizing the colors). These are the ideal, as they are specifically built to the application and far less likely than more generic solutions (like the Deluminate extension for Chrome, which is absolutely awesome for this sort of thing too) to miss edge cases, since a built-in theme is by its very nature should take into account the same circumstances the default theme does. In addition, extensions and user stylesheets only work for the web app, not the native application.

Inverting colors wholesale is fine for text-only content, but where notes contain images this isn't nearly so appealing. Inverted imagery is very hard to discern, even though all the detail is still technically there - our brains just aren't wired to interpret colors that way.

Please incorporate themes into Evernote proper. It is such a great productivity tool as it is, and having this bonus feature will do nothing more than provide support for a user base that may not currently be fully tapped.

Chiming in with the "dark theme" crowd. Got here after a Google Search, go figure. You may think "what was the first thing you did after installing Evernote"? And the answer, as you can imagine, is look for a darker theme.

I code all day and occasionally using stuff with a white background is fine, but I always keep my notes in my second monitor so all that glare is a no-go for me.

Where I use dark themes:

  1. Facebook (using Social Fixer extension)
  2. Inoreader (RSS reader, on Android, iOS, and Windows PC)
  3. Aldiko e-reader (on Android)
  4. Books reader (iOS)
  5. Column Reader (Firefox extension, simplifies web articles and reformats to columns like a newspaper)
  6. Readability (Chrome extension, simplifies web articles)
  7. DuckDuckGo search results

Everywhere I can!  Other members want me to post a reason?  I don't like the blast of light, especially at night.

Please bring it to Evernote!

I do this a lot when I'm tired etc. and it works well and consistently across all my apps.

F.lux is awesome. Most of the problem people complain about with "bright" apps or websites are due to the fact that the light emitted by computer screens is blue light, which is harsher on the eyes. If dimming your screen doesn't work (while it's super easy on a Mac, it's a major PITA on a PC), try F.lux. Super, super awesome.

Dimming the screen is easy in whatever system.

And while f.lux is good stuff, dimming the whole screen just because of Evernote is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

No issues in other apps, and Evernote seems to be adding marginally use features instead of this one that a lot of people want.

What morphine said. I have a color and brightness calibrated monitor, and EN is the only one that gives me this problem. It makes no sense to darken EVERYTHING just to make one application more pleasant to use.

I have a very hard time believing you have no issues with other apps and only have this problem with Evernote... This forum is brighter than the Evernote app, as well as the plethora of full-white websites (Feedly, Medium, Google Drive, etc.). My monitor's calibrated, too, and Evernote isn't brighter than every thing else I use. It's just not. So while Evernote is indeed bright, there are plenty of other things, especially websites, out there people use on a daily basis that are just as bright (literally #FFFFFF hex value background white), which is why I suggested F.lux in an attempt to help you out. It seems my assistance was undervalued, which doesn't exactly encourage others to help you guys out either.

Best of luck finding some solution (though I'd put money down that you'll never get a dark theme from Evernote).

Your suggestion of f.lux was pretty good, and while I can't speak for everyone else, I appreciated it.

As for other stuff being white, that's true enough, but you have to keep in mind that Evernote is an app that I intend to have open and stare at for a long time (in my specific case, on a secondary monitor), usually with not-so-big fonts to avoid too much scrolling. However, rather obviously, I couldn't care less if it was something I only looked at for a couple minutes at a time, like this forum.

Another thing that doesn't go well with the white background are gray/black icons, which to me just make it harder to tell apart (at least it's not grey on white like some Office stuff). But that's probably another discussion entirely, as I have a strong dislike for the recent fad of "super flat" design with nonsensical single-color icons in Windows 8+, Office 10+, iOS 7+, etc. That stuff is just plain harder to look at for long periods of time.

That's more understandable, for sure. I think in the long run, though, it won't be a big deal. The Windows app is pure white and super pale gray, too. While I'm a militant minimalist (one app up on screen, in full screen, at a time), Evernote's up on my screen for hours each day and I don't really have problems. At least, not any more than I do having Gmail, or Todoist, or any other mostly-white thing up. Even when I minimize Evernote to do something else, most areas I work are white. So I guess what I'm saying is, Evernote's not unique in this. And, it won't be the only all-white app people have to deal with.

I'm pretty partial to the flat icons, myself. The less flashy the interface, the more I can focus on my content — which is Evernote's whole purpose. I find the new Mac app to be incredibly easy to read and sift through my notes, and the interface falls away so my content is all I'm thinking about. By definition, that's good design. The Windows app has some more to work on, but they're getting there, bit by bit.

I'm trying out Alternote now. It's slick, and it has a night mode (which is a bit beyond the scope of what most people are asking for -- which is simply a bit more contrast and slightly darker tones in EN's regular mode).

OTOH, I'm not sure what Alternote is supposed to be for. It's so similar to EN that it might as well be EN. Am I missing something? Is it just the night mode and the slightly simplified interface, or is there something else?

I don't need a true dark scheme but would love to see something besides white with pale gray - I can barely see where the scroll bar is on my laptop b/c the gray is so close to white.

Same here. I need some life to it. Pale grey, who makes the decisions on the color scheme. Watch the video for Evernote 5 and they say they chose a light scheme for less distraction. Ugh, no, the pale grey is just simply ugly. Has there been any word on changes that are being implemented?

I would love a dark theme as well. Judging by their "clean, super white, minimalist" approach to design, I won't hold my breath, but something like the OneNote 2016 dark theme would be amazing to have. ;)

Just found dark theme for Chrome, called Deluminate.

ESV Bible.org has a night theme for their website.

For years I have tried to make my words brighter than my background.  I like it, and I like evernote.  Oh for a dark theme on Evernote, I would be so thankful.

Let's get a response from The Team.

I'll send snapshot of everyone's replies by email.

If anyone else knows how to get Evernote's attention; do it & point back here.

If you haven't yet, simply post a +1 to show your support.

Please do not just post +1s. This is a discussion board and we much prefer to have discussions. If you want to contact Evernote directly and be sure that your opinion is recorded somewhere, then contact support (see the link in my signature). Developers read these forums, so I am sure that you have their attention, though it is company policy not to speak about work in progress or future plans, and I think you are unlikely to get a direct answer.

Personally, I think if you want to show your support you should explain why this is a feature that Evernote needs. To play Devil's Advocate here, web browsers don't typically have the feature and the whites on their screens are just as white as the ones on Evernote's, but people (in my experience, at least) don't complain about it.

Again, I would like to see the option as well (see my posts above http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/45681-please-dark-theme/?p=240139), but I have to admit that if I was a developer, I don't think this would be the feature at the top of my list of things to do. If you want to move it up the list, I'd recommend persuasive arguments over +1s.

I would like to be the first to complain about the white on the web browser.  Especially when gray text is added.

Grumpy Monkey is a lousy devil's advocate, because he/she is factually wrong when claiming, "To play Devil's Advocate here, web browsers don't typically have the feature [dark theme]."  Most desktop browsers in fact have countless themes for their user interfaces -- which is the only part of the screen display the browser normally controls -- and they have had them long before Grumpy Monkey said this two years ago.  Firefox, in fact, has over 300,000 themes -- and all people have been asking for here for Evernote is one beyond the (ill-conceived) default:

Grumpy Monkey goes on to say, "The whites on their [browser] screens are just as white as the ones on Evernote's, but people (in my experience, at least) don't complain about it."  That's a pointless comment because (1) the background color for web pages is up to the designer, rather than the browser -- and many savvy ones choose something other than white, and (2) there are countless discussions online and off of web design, including the difficulty of using/reading bright backgrounds.  For many, it's a basic accessibility/readability issue.  As just one example, see point 3 here (and note, despite Grumpy Monkey's contention, that -- OMG! -- in fact not all whites are "just as white"):

It is not clear why Evernote is so unresponsive to the many, many requests for alternate color themes, and for much better readability in general.  The Evernote UI designers seem to be hung up on text with light shades of color (mostly grey) with a background of slightly different light shades.

Is there a UI design school/course that teaches this somewhere?  Or has it, for some reason, just become the "cool" design to use regardless of its usability?

Isn't the first requirement of any UI to clearly communicate with the user?
