New application to export and backup all your notes to HTML/PDF

Hello all Evernote lovers,

I am just curious if anyone would be interested in an offline application to export and backup all your notes from Evernote to HTML/PDF. No monthly fee, no complex process, no need to share your password with anyone. Just a simple application to export your data in one click. I wrote a very simple tool for my personal needs and I will be happy to share a first beta version and add a few features if needed.

Pleae let me know if you are interested :)

Cheers,

Jerome

You might find the educational market is interested - they keep on wanting to print content to paper.  I'm using Evernote to avoid the stuff however - my backups are copies of the database.  The DB runs to 11GB or so - any guess how big an HTML/ PDF copy would be?

Thanks for your feedback gazumped. Since Evernote already uses plain text files to store notes, exporting all the data to HTML shouldn't take more space than Evernote's own directory on your hard drive. However PDF could be significantly larger. Regarding your own DB, it's not easy to say, it depends on the way the data is encoded/compressed... If size is an issue, I guess you could export all the notes in HTML and ZIP the whole directory. This could also be an interesting feature to add. :)

I've found the messages to be pretty helpful. I've an escort booked in Dubai and a whole series of movies lined up.

There is definitely a need for export in PDF, although the current options are quite limited. Cloud hq is premium cost and I think only the mac client supports PDF export now, nothing in windows that I know off...

PDF export can come very much in handy especially when you try to fix text based note conflicts. There is currently no smooth way of fixing conflicts, so a free solution would be very much appreciated. An obvious logical extension would be conflict management. Thanks fot your efforts.

Hello Jerome,

I would love an app like that if I could select which notebooks. I've go so many documents in Evernote now that I'm overwhelmed trying to organize them. I'm thinking of opening a 2nd Evernote Premium account just for creative writing notes and notebooks (many are handwritten). I'd love to be able to export them so I can think creatively. My Evernote cabinet now is too cluttered to think period. :)

Could it also export to .txt files?  If so, I would be interested.

No need for any special third party applications to export notes in pdf. You can export from Evernote windows client itself directly.

1. Install free foxit pdf reader.

2.2 . default export options in Evernote don't havehave pdf.

3. Choose print, select foxit install.

4. Save note in pdf.

For example with pictures, refer here

I am sorry, but i am not able to understand. Why would you need an app to export 'Evernote Notes' into HTML when the core client is itself capable of doing it? Maybe, i misunderstood something. Can someone or the thread owner please explain this?

A windows version is now available on the website: http://www.exportevernote.com/. I hope you'll like it.

@Chad and dagardc: Thanks for your support :)

@Panzerkampfwagen: I started to write this application to export my notes in a hierarchical way "stack->notebook->note". As far as I know, Evernote doesn't support this feature and stores all the notes inside a same directory.

JeromeNYC - Thanks again for the work on this. I've tested out the Windows version and it seems to work quickly and very nicely. Once issue I'm having though is the inability to use this with my Business Notebooks (which is really the only point for me). Is there a way around this? I'm actually quite surprised that it doesn't just pull everything by default so there must be something in the underpinnings of EN that's blocking access to these notebooks?

Thank you for this excellent tip!

What is great about this solution is that the virtual 'PDF Printer' that comes with Foxit is available as a printer for all other programs as well  :)

Well,  you're posting in a thread that describes one answer.. though exporting your notes as readable and editable means keeping two copies of everything on your computer,  and you run the risk of editing the backup and not the original,  then losing the changes down the line.  It's easy enough (and detailed in other posts) to copy the database elsewhere as a backup.  You can always reinstall Evernote and recreate that database on the computer at any time from the server..

Jerome, Thanks for making a great app. I am trying to build some visualizations out of some of my notes, but the export tool inside of evernote windows desktop application doesn't seem to also export notebook information, which this app does. However I cannot seem to get your app to export metadata tag (unless I am missing it). This would be a great feature for me at least because currently I am having to write two separate bits of code. One to parse this output and another to grab the evernote windows desktop applications export for metadata. Either way no big deal and props again for making just what I was looking for.

Jerome. Can you put up some info on the ExportEvernote website regarding the "System Requirements" (for want of a better term).

I attempted to use your software but while it could see folder names it couldn't see any files at all (not just Evernote filetypes) on my Win8.1 system.

Would also like to know whether 'EE' will handle the older .enb filetype if it could see the files at all for that older Evernote format to be selected.

Cheers.

Hi JermomeNYC,

I don't understand the function of your app. Is your way of backing up EN's databases to HTML - onto your PC, I assume? - any different or more effective than what EN already offers Windows users?

To be clear, this is a genuine question, not an attempt to discourage anyone. I ask because if it's exactly what EN offers, then I genuinely don't understand the point. Could you please clarify it for me?

Thanks all for your support. This is really motivating!

I just released a new version of the app (Mac and Windows) that includes many bug fixes and a new simplified UI. You can get it today on http://www.exportevernote.com/. I will try to find some time during the summer to add the export to PDF!

@aysla: thanks for the suggestion, I don't see any problem adding the meta-data in the next version :)

I suggest you include a free trial version, say upto 50 notes or something but with unlimited Stacks, Notebooks and Notes kind of thing.. So users can get an idea how your application works.. Especially I don't figure how your application with export my note as PDF if it has video, audio image and other documents in it..

Secondly several applications fail under large databases.. For eg My 4 year old notebook with 1 GB RAM is not able to load my EN database of over 9000+ notes, that i am forced to create a duplicate account..

How has your application workes for larger databases? I think the people With the larger databases are more likely to be your paid customers..

Also please upload a YouTube video to show how the app is working..

Also if there can be some way in which the Tag Metadata can also be exported such that it is detectable by Windows OS, along with the Notebook based organization, then this app will be awesome..

Another aspect I would suggest adding is what differentiates your basic/premium products from native application functionality (the ubiquitous "checkbox chart").

For example, I would like to know what it does that the Windows desktop client does not compared to the "export as multiple web pages" feature.

for all those asking why you'd need a way to export html when it's provided natively within the app....simple....have you tried it? It's pretty *****.

When you export to HTML the resulting document is just one massive html page with all your notes crammed onto it. There is no real structure apart from the fact that each note is separated by a line. If you wanted to publish your notebooks/notes for non-Evernote users to peruse, the native HTML layout is horrid. I was about to ditch Evernote until I saw this thread. Basically I need to provide a way for other non-Evernote users to view my notebooks in a structured format that's easy to navigate and that is understandable. On a sidenote, it's a shame you can't add stacks within a stack. While I get that it's all about being pure and all that other mumbo jumbo, just listen to your user-base, there's a stack (pun intended) of people who would prefer it (and clearly need it) - anecdotally speaking of course. Such a simple function to add. Yes I know the rave is all about tags, but it doesn't mean the feature can't be added for those who need it.

So create an 'index note' that is a home page for links to your other notes,  using the note share URL for the link.  All notes need to be public shares.  On each of the subpages,  provide a link back to the public share URL of the index note.  If you only have a few sub-pages you could also add a link to the next note in a series.  If you have a lot of notes,  some of your sub-pages could have child notes of their own.  Basically,  use a standard web page structure but link with the shared note URLs rather than web addresses.  You then need to send the main home page URL to your audience.  If you make further changes to this setup,  including when you add or delete pages,  your audience will see the most up to date content next time they view.
