Evernote "Not responding"

Hoping to get some help.

 

I'm new to Evernote and using it for about 3 weeks without issues.

 

Then when opening (double clicking on icon) Evernote opens up but goes immediately to "Not Responding".

I've waited for as long as seems practical, but without it responding, I've had no option but to exit Evernote via Task Manager.

 

I'm obviously unable to access anything within Evernote now (NoteBooks and or an error Log etc)

 

I've un-installed and then re-installed Evernote.

The new install gave me a later version  5.0.2.1392.

However I have the exact same problem.

On opening Evernote it goes straight to "Not Responding" and I can only close it via "Task Manager".

 

Using Win 7.

 

I've raised a ticket but have so far (nearly a week) had no reply other than an inital acknowledgment of my ticket being raised.

 

Would appreciate any assistance. As things stand Evernote is unusable to me.

OK - 

  1. Sync everything and exit Evernote completely*
  2. Backup your database*  
  3. Revo Uninstall
  4. Restart
  5. Reinstall
  6. Sign in and wait for Evernote to repopulate your database (might take a while)
  7. Try again..

I have done all of 1 to 7 on your list other than

1. I couldn't Synch prior to exiting because the "Not Responding" doesn't allow me to click on anything within Evernote.

3. Revo ? is this an uninstall software ? I don't have it so uninstalled Evernote via Windows>Contral Panal> Uninstall.

 

In spite of the above, which I have tried 3 times now, I have the same issue.

When I open Evernote via the desktop icon it starts up and  immediately goes to "Not Responding".

I can only close down Evernote via Task Manager.

 

I'm most grateful for your help.

Is there anything else to try in order to get Evernote to work ?

Is it an issue you have come across before ?

Hi - have a search for Revo Uninstaller and try again - there's a free version which will remove all traces of the uninstalled program and give you a clean start.  It's worth doing..

Yes I've searched.

However, I'd prefer not to install and run further programs (Revo) I know lttle about in order to solve a problem with another software (Evernote) that's not working.

It can often cause even more problems imo.

 

Thank you for at least taking the time to help.

Having still had no reply to the ticket I raised on this to Evernote I have little option than to try to copy out everything I've been working on from the Web based access to Evernote

and seek a better alternative.

 

I was thinking to upgrade to Premium, but see no reason why that should work if Evernote doesn't work as is.

Just thought I'd update this incase anyone finds this:

 

Having uninstalled Evernote via Windows> control panel> uninstall

I noticed there was still an Evernote Folder in;

username>local>Evernote.

 

I copiy/pasted this to Desktop and then deleted it from the directory.

 

I then re-booted pc and then did a new install of Evernote.

 

It's working having given it the necessary time to Sych, I have the NB's I created but not including one created but not Syched prior to the "not responding" at which time I couldn't Synch.

(I may try to "drop" this into the Evernote Folder from that which I copied to Desktop prior to deleting it, as I presume there is a copy of it)

 

No mind, at least it's not "not responding".

 

I'm not an expert with this and the above is by no means a recommendation as a solution, but other than the kind help from gazumped and without any response to the ticket I raised with Evernote Support, I thought it worth a try.

 

Hope this may be of some use.

Not sure what you mean by "in case anyone finds this" - you're on a user forum which is regularly read by about a dozen "power users" and by many others (I'd guess) when they're looking for a solution to their own problems or want to sound off about something.  The Evernote Support team and various Developers also dip in for information and research,  but don't always contribute.  And my comment about Revo was because Revo Uninstaller will run through the Windows Uninstall process automatically - and then search the registry and hard drive for any other keys or files related to the deleted software.  It gives a thorough spring clean and ensures a completely bug-free reinstall for your software.  If your latest attempt doesn't make it,  I'd still recommend trying Revo out...

All I meant by "in case anyone finds this" is if anyone that had a similar problem came across my post and in doing so that it might assist them in resolvong a similar problem.

This was my first posting and I've no idea how many or who reads this.

 

I don't follow why that would be something you would want to comment on.

You've been most helpful and I've been most grateful for that help.

 

I merely intended to repay that help "in case anyone finds this", by posting how I had resolved the issue (so far at least, meaning I hope it stays resolved)

Well I, for one, have been following this thread. Really appreciate the observations of both MT1010 and Gazumped. I've been having a hell of a time with Evernote lately, with no response at all a week or so after having created a ticket. I'm tempted to give gazumped's Revo method a shot, though it's a little nerve wracking. The alternative is just unspeakable – I've been looking into services such as Springpad and (blech) Google Keep. I'm not ready to make the jump just yet. It's rather amazing that I'm even considering it. An unresponsive Evernote is useless, though, and frankly, I've put myself into a position where I can barely function without my notes. Sign of the times, I guess. Anyway, thanks again to you both. I'm downloading Revo as we speak.

I had the same problem (among others) with version 5.

 

I reverted back to 4.7 and all is well. Just Do It.

 

Come back to 5 when the bugs and design issues are worked out.

I reverted back, as well. Seemed to be better for a little while and then the same old problems arose. Really frustrating.

Can I suggest that as Gaz has suggested you look again at Revo as this is a recognised programme for completely un-installing software. I think you will find this may be the answer to your problem.

I would copy all of your Evernote folder before doing so.

Yep. I believe this is the step I'll take. I hate to lose all my settings and shortcuts, but compared to the inconvenience of a non-functioning Evernote, it's a small matter. I'll be sure to report back on the results.

I am having the same problems 2-3 times a day.

 

New Evernote installation on a new clean Windows 7 installation.

 

It is so annoying that if I was not such a Evernote fan, I would have moved on to Keep or something.

So, just by threatening to do a complete uninstall, I seem to have fixed my problem. I have absolutely no explanation for it, but in the last 24 hours, I haven't seen the "not responding error" once. This after encountering it a half dozen times or so per day over the course of a few weeks. Wish I could offer up some suggestions, but damn if I know what brought it around. Of course, just by writing this, I probably doomed myself to further problems.

Yeah, that'll teach me. The problem is back. I want to get an activity log for the techs, but when it freezes up, it's not coming back until I restart and thus, no log. A real pickle, this.

Unbelievable. After several more weeks of freeze ups and maddening "not responding" errors, I finally went to the Revo route, uninstalled and cleaned out all traces of the program from the registry. Reinstalled, let it sync up and crossed my fingers. A couple hours later, BAM! Not responding. I just don't get it. Years of flawless use and now Evernote is the most troublesome program on my computer. Baffling.

I believe I've uncovered an important clue here, if anyone else is still having this problem. Yesterday, I made it entire day without the dreaded "not responding" error. The early part of today, as well. Then I went down to the office (I've been on vacation the past couple days) and fiddled with my Evernote desktop program there. Got home and BOOM! Not responding. It seems pretty clear that this is probably a sync issue that arises when I access my notes from another location. A vital clue, maybe, but I have no idea what to do about it. If anyone else has insight, I'd love to hear it. It's been a long haul with this issue.

I still have this issue. Evernote has been pretty decent with their support, but so far, nothing. They moved it up to the next tier this afternoon. It's frustrating because I can't generate an activity log when the program is frozen. After restarting Evernote, the log is fresh and shows nothing related to the issue. Crazy. I've reinstalled twice now using Revo. If there's an upside to all this, it's discovery that spiffy little program. Great for obliterating unwanted ***** on your computer.

I'm sure I've seen warnings about using remote folders with Evernote - have you tried reverting to local storage to see if that's the issue?

What about the various means we have of automating things? I use IFTT to save things to Evernote and I think I have something similar set up with Pocket. Would this be considered remote operation? Think I'll try disabling those things to see if it has any impact. I'm freezing up a dozen times a day at this point.

It's always worth going back to basics and trying one thing at a time until you find the problem.  If various things have to authenticate with,  save to,  or find things in Evernote you can understand ts operation being slowed down.  I was actually thinking of storing Evernote files on a remote server though - similar problems with transfer speeds, access etc being slower than direct to local hard drive.

I've done another Revo uninstall and started all over. Began to think maybe my new browser (SRWARE Iron) was conflicing with EN so I stopped using it. No help. Tried disabling Web clipper, no go. Stopped using the client at work in case that was the source of the problem. Nada. Been going back and forth with support two or three times a week. They're stumped. Damn frustrating this issue.

For what it's worth, I logged out of two machines at work and haven't had the freeze up at home in *checks watch* 24 hours now. Oh, please let that be the fix.

Just wanted to take a moment and confirm it was indeed the fact that I had Evernote backing up in a Google Drive folder. After choosing a "non-cloud" associated directory Evernote has been working without issue.

I believe this refers to setting the "local file" path for the database to a non-cloud location in Tools > Options > General

I've signed out of Evernote on every machine except my main one. For a day and a half, it was bliss, with no errors and no frustrating freeze-ups. Today? Just experienced my fourth freeze of the day. I'm stumped.

Me too.  Is your database stored on your local hard drive now?  If so,  I think it's time we asked the support team to take a look (see link below) - they're busy right now (I gather) and there's some holiday or other coming up soon,  but hopefully they'll be able to help.

It is. It's on my C drive where it's always been.

Support has been working with me for well over a month now. I heard from them today, in fact. They were asking some routine questions as the investigation continues. I definitely can't fault the support guys for lack of trying. I think it's gotten to the point where they're baffled and being baffled frustrates them. That's definitely to my advantage. It's too bad because it really seemed like the multiple long-on thing was going to be it. I DID have a day or so of flawless performance, so it seems like there's got to be a link there.

Might be on to something.... I've been suffering this for some time as well. Tried the removal/reinstall technique and it worked for a day or so and then went belly up again.

 

I've been experiences multiple freezes per hour -- and I've noticed it's often when I'm updating tags or titles of existing notes -- or when .  

 

So I got the idea in my head to turn off related notes and restart the app... and viola, it seems to be fixed. Time will tell! :-)

 

My guess is that there's something off in the indexing that is exacerbated in the related notes feature/usage.

Welp, just in case it helps anyone else, it appears that the indexing service on my Windows machine was behind the constant Evernote freeze ups. I disabled that and haven't had any problems in a week or so. Great relief to have that worked out, even if it means limiting my search capabilities on my PC. I should point out that Evernote techs have been fantastic from the very beginning. They stuck with it until the end. Very impressive.

I have been experiencing the Evernote freezing problem on my Windows 7 machine for a couple of months now and have finally found the time to do a bit of research. This topic is as far as I've gotten. I will try the complete uninstall if I have to but before I do can you tell me how to disable the indexing on Windows? That sounds like an easier fix to start with. Or perhaps I have to do both?

I'd recommend you Google or Bing "disable windows indexing 7" (without the quotes) - there are a lot of detailed instructions out there with useful illustrations.

My desktop client is mostly freeze free, although it does have occasional hiccups. I thing those are ordinary, though, not the repeated snags I used to see. Well my good news is that I have a result quickly...the bad news is it hasn't worked (though I've only got indexing turned off, not searching).

 

My situation is - I generally open EN first thing when I turn on the computer - then I go to it as needed - what's been happening for the past couple of months is that if I leave it for say 30 minutes or more without going to it, the next time I do try to go to it I get the "not responding" message and I have to close, then also end the process via the task manager otherwise I can't re-open it at all. Lately (last week or so) this not responding thing has started to happen while I am using EN (i.e. I am actually in the application doing things) though only occasionally. This is what prompted me to see if there was a solution though.

 

I did think it might be to do with the synchronising so after I did the re-install today I opened EN on my PC then deliberately left it for 45 minutes - I didn't open EN on my iPad or iPhone during that time - when I cam back to EN I got the old familiar "not responding" thing. 

 

I don't know if I've got the energy to put in a support ticket for such a vague problem (nothing against the EN people but I imagine working through it all will take lots of time and I'm in a different time zone which just drags things out further) - I think I'll probably just use my workaround which is to close EN after each use. This is not ideal - and actually doesn't work indefinitely as I usually end up having to manually end the task process after a couple of dozen open/close sessions - but it's about the best I can think of.

Ultimately, they agreed that indexing was probably my problem when I reported that it solved the trouble. An earlier suspicion was that keeping evernote open on other machines – my laptop, work computer, smart phone – may be the source of the problem. I tried shutting all those other versions of EN and for a day or two, it seemed to help. Then it just reemerged like some horror movie monster that just won't die. It's crazy because you'd think there are all sorts of people experiencing this problem, but it seems limited to a handful. Windows 7 seems to be a common theme. If I remember right, that's what OS you're on too, right?

Yes, Windows 7...and the PC is nearly 3 years old with all the usual issues of having been used by several people over that time - one of them a teenager - all sorts of odd little things having been downloaded and removed and turned on/off. That's why I'm not sure I can be bothered with the support process - there'll be so many different things to check - it's probably less time consuming for me to continue with my current awkward workaround. But I'll consider it.

 

There might be more people experiencing this and not worrying about it...As I was for a couple of months. Perhaps they haven't reached their tipping point yet :)

There might be more people experiencing this and not worrying about it...As I was for a couple of months. Perhaps they haven't reached their tipping point yet :)

 

I certainly fit into this category and about to move into the post-tipping-point category.  I'm a drive-by geek and Premium Subscriber who suspects the "not responding" on Win7 comes from indexing and using the web version, android and ipad. Since one of EN's marketing pillars is cross-platform congruence, they'd be wise to fix this and preserve their $49 subscriptions.  there will be ship juimpers.

I'm just popping into this thread with a thought that may or may not be helpful.

In a 4-5 month span of time about a year and a half ago, no less than four Trojan viruses got past my so-call top of the line expensive security software (I don't use *them* anymore... ;) ), and wreaked total havoc on my Windows 7 laptop.

Four visits to my computer doctor, $500 later including my new *actually useful* security software, I finally clued to something... You can NOT always count on Window native ability to Unistall some programs completely, despite what the Windows Uninstall feature is telling you. My tech doctor agrees that it's entirely possible that one or more seeming trustworthy programs I downloaded to try out, buried some viscious Malware deep in my system that a regular Windows Uninstall could not detect. Over time, the malware spread until each time I had to have my system completely wiped and reloaded.

I can't actually speak from personal experience about the Uninstall program called Revo, that Gaz and others have repeatedly recommended here, and in a lot of various threads. BUT I have been here long enough to trust that they know what they are talking about. If I should ever need to uninstall my Windows application to solve an Evernote problem, I WILL happily use Revo.

I am also having this problem, may times during the day.  It is particularly annoying when I get a phone call and really need to take notes of what I'm being told on the call and cannot access EN.  Today I actually fired up MS Word (!) of all things to take notes that I could later paste into EN when EN decided to respond again.  Amazingly Word was faster to use than EN.  That's like saying Amtrak was faster than your airplane.  Yikes.

 

One theory I have is that this seems to always occur while the Outlook icon in the taskbar shows Outlook is syncing messages.  Given EN's painful dependency on IE I would not be surprised if it also has some unnecessary reliance on an Outlook/MAPI API that cannot return until Outlook is responsive.  

 

Also, the last time it happened I looked at the activity log and it shows:

15:51:08 [23748] 100% * sent: 1.5KB, received: 366B15:51:08 [23748] 100% Connecting to www.evernote.com/edam/note/s115:51:08 [23748] 100% Session terminated normally, elapsed time: 0s15:51:08 [13984] Client synchronization finished, status: complete15:51:08 [13984] * 1 item sent 15:51:08 [13984] * elapsed time: 3m 48s

So - a sync that lasted 3:48 minutes!  To sync 1 note that's 1.5KB!  That shows 2 things:

1. The UI is still freezing during syncs.  WHY?  Get a book on multi-threading, guys!

2. Something can cause a 1k sync to last 3 minutes!  Why?  Again, I suspect an errant MAPI/Outlook call that is not multithreaded.

 

I'm on Win 7, EN Win 5.2.1.3108, Outlook 10, very fast internet connection (during the middle of the 3+ minute freeze my resource monitor showed NO network activity).

One theory I have is that this seems to always occur while the Outlook icon in the taskbar shows Outlook is syncing messages. 

 

Hmm, I dont use Outlook but it still persists.

If the hanging is due to background indexing, perhaps they should add an option in preferences to schedule reindexes when not in use, or have some type of indicator that indexing is running. "Not responding" is not useful feedback to the user.

5.4.1.3741(271741) Prerelease still has it.

 

When you start Evernote, it seems to be syncing which disallows users to perform actions such as new note or search. It may be better to sync when idle or sync when manually activated.

Better to sync on startup than to edit a note that has already been changed on another device - and although I've written it  more than a few times,  it's easy to say "sync before you edit" but not so easy to remember when you're busy...

I am still having the same problems after the same fixes. I suspect it is the re-indexing that is going on in the background. Reindexing should be an option that can be done offline when inactive, or prompted when a search is done, e.g. "Your notebook needs reindexing..."

Evernote is still prone to random whitescreens for seconds at a time,  even in its latest incarnation for Windows Beta (5.4.1.3741) and I'm currently on a new computer with a new installation and recently downloaded database,  so I don't think either my index or the database is likely to be fragmented or out of date.  It is getting better,  and (IMHO) it's a distraction rather than a problem - YMMV - I just do something else for a few seconds (coffee is good) until it has its act together;  then we go on.

 

However.  If you do have problems,  and again IMHO,  you need to raise a support ticket and follow through with whatever standard fixes the guys throw at you:  because they don't know whether it's the software or an old,  cranky system with a full HD and no memory that's causing the aggravation.  You'll be able to help with that,  you may get a fix for your problem,  and Evernote gets the feedback they need to know that this is still an issue.

 

"Reindexing" implies something which has been done once and requires re-doing;  "indexing" is something that Evernote does once and keeps,  except that every new or changed note needs to be indexed so the new content can be found,  and I can see all sorts of problems arising if that gets delayed for any reason.  After you change a note there will never be a 'good' time for the system to take however many seconds,  minutes or hours it might need to rebuild the index.  When you do it,  a quick second or so of activity should fit in well with any natural breaks you'd take before moving on to another note.  The fact that it doesn't makes the process a problem that needs to be fixed better - and Evernote being as transparent as they normally aren't,  we don't actually know whether or not they're still working on it.

 

I don't care what processes may get swopped around by Evernote - they will understand completely how the app works,  and should be able to choose the best way to reduce or avoid this issue.  I think we should just leave'em to it,  but feedback like demons when the problems happen so they'll know when (and if) it's fixed.

Ultimately, the fix was to cut and paste the corrupted note into a Word document and remove all formatting. I then deleted the original note in Evernote, reformatted the note in Word as I wanted it, and pasted it back into Evernote (creating a new note). It hasn't hanged since. (I have no idea what part of the formatting became corrupt, but the hangs started shortly after I attached a JPEG to the note.)

Mine hangs indefinitely. I have to force close and it start it up fresh every time. Still, I'm going to prowl through my notes list in case there are obvious signs of a bad file. Thanks for the advice.

Using Revo removes Evernote the app and all its support files including,  (if you get too enthusiastic) your database file;  but that's not the main object of an app reinstall - the idea is to remove any bloat caused by repeated updates rather than a clean install. 

 

Renaming the database doesn't affect the installed app,  but does force Evernote to download the server copy in full and recreate the local index on your machine,  so removing (in theory) any local corruption causing freezes.  Both are worth trying,  but satisfaction is not guaranteed.

Have you tried accessing your local database while offline? And if that doesn't work have you tried after booting in Windows safe mode? Accessing the local database would be the easiest way to hone in on the corrupted note (assuming that you're having the same problem I had). Alternatively, you could access your notes on the web; email yourself the suspicious note(s) as a backup (you can select multiple using the Control key); delete the suspicious notes using the web interface; then sync this to a new install of Evernote on your computer.

It seems like I tried a few things of that nature back in the days when the issue first appeared, but damn if I can remember the specifics. I did do the Revo uninstall and all of that. A few times, in fact. Really irksome issue. For me, it was literally no problem one day, a big problem the next. Seems like that should be helpful in hunting down a bad file, but so far, nope.

I had finally gotten it down to the occasional freeze up, but iMr. Not Responding is back with a vengeance. So annoying. Hard to believe I've been battling this issue for a year now.

I had finally gotten it down to the occasional freeze up, but iMr. Not Responding is back with a vengeance. So annoying. Hard to believe I've been battling this issue for a year now.

Also: Every time when starting Evernote for the fist time after starting my notebook it freezes and then it takes a long time until it is usable (even after waiting that all services in the background have started completely before starting Evernote)

After starting Evernote I can even start some other programs that completely start while Evernote is still frozen in the background (while there is nothing to sync!).

 

Before updating to this version Evernote has never frozen like this.

Try the Revo uninstall and reinstall process on your version of Evernote,  and you could try refreshing the database and index by rebuilding from the server - search the forums for full instructions,  or raise a support ticket if you prefer to have the tech guys walk you through the process...

I followed your thread in March, but did not see a final resolution mentioned.


 

I have done the "uninstall - reinstall - resync" many times over the past 3 years - with no success.  

 

I've been tracking the "Not Responding" problem on my computer. It happens often. I don't believe it is associated with a specific release of Evernote because some of the dates it occurred were:

 

2012 - Dec 15

2013 - May 5

2014 - Feb 24

2014 - Mar 27

2014 - Jul 13 - Support is investigating my activity logs

I'm still walking on eggshells,  though normal service seems to have been resumed.  I was pointed to a couple of notes which according to the logs were being synced when bad things happened.  They weren't anything special,  just short text items - which I killed and replaced.  I did get jumped to the prerelease version -even before it was a public prerelease- because I was told sync and background indexing had been improved.  And I stopped inbound sharing.  With all of the above and updates on the beta stream up to 5.5.2.4057 I seem to be getting along just fine.  Evernote starts quickly,  syncs reliably and swops accounts (I use a couple) without problems.  My main account is Premium with around 18,000 notes and a 12GB database.  (Lots of long,  boring PDFs...)

I still believe in the 'one bad note' concept as a possible solution to this vexation, but my problem remains: how to hunt down the offending note or notes? There don't seem to be any clues as to which one has gone bad. Nothing in my conflicting notes folder and nothing marked red to announce a problem. It's tempting to just go through and delete any unneeded notes in hopes of eradicating the problem, but that seems like a desperate move.

I followed all your suggestions and also deleted the whole database-folder so the completely new installed Evernote re-downloads all notes from the servers. But the initial sync then stopped at 1,5 of 2 GB. Every repeated sync stops again at the same note (I saw this in the activity log) so the local dababase was not usable.

 

I made a support ticket and send them the log. They knew about the problem and told me to try this version:

 


 

So again I deinstalled the official version, deleted the database folder and installed this prerelease version.

 

With this version everything works fine now and it syncs as fast as it should! No "Not responding" any more.

 

I hope this is also a solution for other users witht the same problem.

@mrossk - Glad to hear things are up and running again!

 

One general point - I forgot one trick from my own experiences that might help with the 'random note crash' issue.  That seems to come from a malformed note which is often difficult to find and fix.  One buckshot answer is to export your notes to ENEX files,  notebook by notebook,  then delete the originals and reimport them.  The notes are recreated via the import process and (hopefully) any errors get fixed.

 

Not to be used lightly because this will fry any note links you may have created and hit your upload allowance pretty hard,  but if it's the only game in town...  (I did this for a couple of suspect notes and it worked fine.)

This is a good idea but I have been not able to find out which of my 1000 notes has had this problem. And after deleting the database on my notebook I had no other chance than to re-download the completete database from the Evernote servers (Yes, I had a backup, but only for emergeny cases because it was 2 days old and in the last 2 days I made many changes via the web-interface).

 
Thanks for this hint. Maybe I can use it in an other case.

* After analyzing the activity log, Support asked me to exit Evernote, run the Debug and perform a local database Optimization.

 

* Problem continued - I sent a new activity log

 

* Support asked me to perform another uninstall and reinstall the newest beta.

 
One of their requests surprised me:
Step 6. Close Internet Explorer and Outlook (if present)
 

* Problem continued - I sent another activity log

 
* Support replied:
"At this time, I'm going to escalate this to our technical support team for further assistance. Please understand that they are working on your case and a team member will respond to you as soon as they've had time to research the issue.

I also tried a birdshot approach. Just for the hell of it, I cleared out my trash, which contained several hundred old notes. Didn't experience a freeze up the remainder of the day. I'm just getting started this afternoon, so it remains to be seen if the 'fix' will last.

jbenson, do you have any response from your escalated support request from last week?  It sounds like you have gotten further than most people so it would be great to hear what comes of it.  This problem has been driving me crazy for months now and basically makes evernote windows useless for note taking (I can mostly use EN/Web or EN/ios instead).

I have this same issue on my Windows 7 PCs (one at work and one at home).

 

EN runs nicely most of the time, but when it starts, it almost always goes into "Not Responding" mode.

 

If I give it a couple/few mins it will often sort itself.

 

But it's a bit of a hassle that I can't use it since often I'm going in to make a quick note of something before the idea is replaced by the distraction of something shiny.

I'm not totally sure but I suspect it only because this only seems to happen when the app first loads. But it ostensible freezes so I can't tell what is actually happening, i.e. whether it is secretly syncing or not.

 

It's very rare that I have to End Task on it and restart. I've learned to just wait it out for a couple mins.

 

But it's the principle of the thing.  :)  It's not working correctly to some degree or another.

 

Plus I'd like to start a note, most of the time. So then I gotta go make coffee.  Only I don't drink coffee.

When I clear my cookies and reboot, it takes 7+ minutes to open Evernote.

What release are you running?  When I moved to the new release, 4187, I noticed a lag when the app first loads, something I had not experienced before.  I'm not getting the not responding message and the lag is maybe 10-15 seconds as the app loads.  

 

On the other hand, I have noticed significant speed improvements when the app is up and running.  Virtually no lags from me now, where i had 5-7 second lags on some searches before this release.  Perhaps to improve performance there is some caching or the like being done on start-up?

It was working pretty smooth for me the past couple days, but then I used the Evernote desktop program on my office computer. Predictably, that has resulted in frequent freeze ups at home. I could avoid using EN at work, but really. Isn't the whole point of Evernote the ability to use it anywhere? Real bummer, this problem.

You know? I did empty trash on my main computer, but didn't think to do the same on my machine at work. Good call. I'll do that this afternoon and see if it makes a difference. It DID seem to help, for a short time at least, when I did it on my home computer.

Weird that using one computer slows down another - I know you tried everything already;  have you cleared the trash recently on all your Evernote connected computers and on the web version?

 

-There's a new Beta on the block too which may help..

 

Great idea. I backed up the Trash and am now trying to empty it of the 1,190 notes in it.

 

As soon as I started the process, EN went "not responding".  This lasted for a good 5 mins.

 

Then it finally showed some sign of life and moments later the folder was empty.

 

It would be nice if there were a dialog that indicated it was doing what I asked, instead of going into a "not responding" coma.  Especially since it is actually doing the task. So technically, it is responding.

PS: After the trash emptied, it of course started sync'ing. Again with the "not responding".

 

2-3 mins later it was fine.

 

I remoted into my home machine (also Win 7) and started the sync there. "Not responding".

 

It's not using but about 3-5% of CPU and a 60-100MB of memory. What is EN doing that makes it not respond?

1,190 notes in trash?  Really?  I have 25 notes there and that's overdue for a clear-out!  I don't know for sure,  but if you add and delete notes from any notebook Evernote has to update its index so that you can (or can't) find those notes again by a variety of key bits of information most of that action could be held in memory for search speed and efficiency until Evernote is closed.  A 'reasonable' amount of hesitation* is OK while Evernote does the housekeeping,  but if you're getting serious lag - after trying all the suggestions in the forums - then that's worth a support ticket.

This is so absurd. I'm going out of my way to avoid using Evernote because the program freezes so frequently. I've taken to sending myself emails or using notepad like it's 1997. Kind of defeats the purpose of having EN in the first place. I wish they'd pin this issue down and kill it.

The loading of the bootstrap info seems to take longer than it should. There was no synchronization involved here.

 

When I do synchronize (I only have 27 notes online at the moment) it only took 12 seconds, but this line appears in the log file:

 

09:46:33 [5656] 0% * expunge 0 notebooks, 0 notes, 0 tags, 0 searches, 135674032 linked notebooks
With this one a bit later:

What is that all about? Doesn't 135 million notebooks exceed the limits of the program?? Not enough delay here to put in a ticket, IMHO, but maybe contributes to identifying the issue?
