Darrell 0
I was using evernote on my laptop and on my desktop using a ScanSnap S510 that I would share with the two computers. My evernote contains a few offline folders.I want to be certain that I can move all the local files from the laptop to desktop and that Evernote on the desktop will still recognize the moved local files.Stop using the laptop except for viewing. The desktop will be the primary source for adding scans. What are the steps to make this go well? Thank you in advance for your time and experience. Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 12,042 Posted August 23, 2013 Level 5* Share Posted August 23, 2013 Two options.. export the local notebooks to ENEX files on the laptop, then import them on the desktop. Your other files should already be identical. No major surgery required. Other option would be to sync everything and make sure laptop and desktop are both up to date, then copy laptop database (EXB) file and overwrite the desktop EXB file, creating a copy including the local notebooks. You'd then want to delete those notebooks on the laptop to avoid versioning problems. In both cases I'd exit Evernote completely and make sure you have an up to date backup of both current databases just in case something goes sadly wrong... Link to comment

If so, AFAIK, Evernote's note history is on the EN servers & therefore, only available for notes in sync'd notebooks. IME, when copying an exb file from one computer to another, there is no need to delete any notebooks. In fact you would not want to delete any notebooks in this case, since the point is to get the local notebooks that are current on one computer to another computer. Link to comment

This gets all the local notes onto a single computer. You'd then need to do the following exb file move below to get all the local notes onto the other computer, using the computer containing all the local notes as the source exb file & the other computer as the target. If the laptop is the only computer with local notebooks, then the best way, IMO, is to make sure both computer are sync'd to the EN cloud, rename the exb file on the desktop & then copy the exb file from the laptop to the desktop. This process (exb file) would be reversed if/when you add more notes to the local notebooks on the desktop & want to view them on the laptop. Link to comment

Nope sorry - should have been clearer: I was concerned that if there are two computers with local non-synced notes, there will be a temptation for someone to alter a note on whichever computer they're using, not think "Ah! I must go back to my desktop upstairs and change this...". And you wind up with two different versions of the same note. So moving local notes from one computer to another will only "stick" if the originals are trashed once the new ones are in place. Then there's no temptation to be lazy. Of course I may be making assumptions based on my own natural-born inertia... Link to comment
