Can you delete/clear/remove a Reminder?

Hi,

 

Apologies if this is ultra-obvious or has been discussed.... but I don't see the function and haven't found anything in discussions.

 

Can you simply delete a Reminder from a note?

 

I am using Mac client, IOS client and web versions... all is good, reminders are great... but I have several times created a Reminder on the wrong note and simply want to delete the reminder... and I can't see any way to do this. I realize I can hide them and/or check them off as complete... but I would prefer to simply delete those that are not needed.

 

Any help appreciated.

This may be confusing at first, but reminder and note creation are closely tied together. That is, in order to create a reminder, you must create a note first (and the reminder is tied to that note) -- for example, grocery shopping list for June 7.

 

However, once you've completed your shopping list and want to delete or clear a reminder, you just need to select the grocery note and:

• in the note editor, click the Reminder icon and click "Clear Reminder" or "Mark as Done" (this will remove the note from your Reminders in the note list -- "deleting" the reminder -- but will not delete the note)
• in the note list, click the checkmark next to the grocery note to "mark as done" (then click the gear and uncheck "Show Recently Completed Reminders" if you'd like)

If, in this example, you really don't need that grocery shopping list note anymore - regardless of hiding the reminder or marking it as done - you can just delete the note itself.

This is frankly confusing and cumbersome - and it would be better if we can clear reminders from the reminders list rather than having to go to each note.

I totally agree with dnim. 

 

I don't want to have to go to the hassle of having ticked off a reminder - only to go and have to delete the note as well. This is very cumbersome and frankly confusing. In my mind checking of a reminder should send the task to a completed folder that i should be able to search - end of story (its important for me to be able to verify that I've completed tasks at times). Surely this is just common sense or am I missing something?

 

Any help with this or fix in future versions would be really helpful.

The longer I use Evernote, the more I am starting to resent it and this Reminder feature is a great example why....

I did not even realize that it deleted the entire note, until 3 weeks later when I went to look for it and to my horror find it missing. Thankfully it was in my trash, but come on Evernote! Do you use your own product? Or your entire company conforms to whatever your developers decide correct work flow is? On top of this, show me a single application that does not let you simply delete a reminder. Argh!

I'm a new Evernote user, and I jumped in entirely, got the premium account -- and now I'm regretting it.  

 

I don't like that the reminders-notes organization is so counter-intuitive, and I also echo pruchai, cgk, & dmim that deleting reminders (versus deleting notes) should be much easier.  

 

The notes should also disappear from the reminder list when you've marked them (with effort) as done.

 

And why, oh why, must the interface be so different in the web version and in the Mac app???  IOS different I get, but both full-screen applications all differently set up?  Confusing and cumbersome.  A little too much effort.  

 

The learning curve is too steep:  one should not have to invest so much time figuring out how to save time.

Sorry you're having such a difficult time. But to clarify:

 

You should know that clearing a reminder from a selected note via the Reminder icon does NOT delete the note. It merely removes it from the Reminders list.

Actually, I'm finding that DELETED notes still show up  in my reminder list (the thing you get when you click on the little satellite icon).  

 

?!  It seems I have to go into my trash, restore the deleted note in order to delete the reminder that I didn't specifically delete because that time has passed and I deleted that note.

 

AND will it then finally disappear from the list? 

 

This reminders feature needs work, Evernote folks.  It's too cumbersome.  I'd like the option simply to turn it off so I don't have to see a giant list of reminders for notes I've actually deleted.  And I can't even do that.  The only option under preferences that I see is to turn email reminders on or off (this is the Mac app version).

MiMo, on re-reading your last response I think I should clarify further.

 

You do not have to restore the deleted note to remove a reminder. It will disappear from your Reminders list if you delete it, and then you can simply empty the Trash.

Not everywhere.  That doesn't work for notes in the trash, and yet they remain on my reminder list. I'd really like to have them off that list, but perhaps I have to empty the Trash permanently?  Nope, because I just emptied the trash, deleted them all permanently, and they're STILL in the reminder list.  When I try to delete them from the list, I get the "The selected item has been deleted" message.  Really illogical.

My experience has always been that when I clear a reminder via the drop-down button it disappears from the Reminders list.

Sounds like you have an issue more specific to your installation - you should open a support case.

Can you please give us the ability to select multiple notes from the Reminders list and then clear the reminders from all the selected notes in one move, via an addition to the drop-down contextual menu?

This seems to be the source of your confusion. When you click on the satellite dish, you’re not seeing your reminders list. That’s your Activity Feed.

 

The activity feed is a history of things that have happened. If a reminder becomes due, it will show up in this feed. Deleting or clearing the reminder will not remove it from the feed. You can’t change history.

 

The list of reminders actually appears at the top of your note list. If you’re seeing a deleted reminder showing up there, then you are in fact seeing a bug.

Yes, clearing the reminders, in an easier fashion would be nice. When selecting all, and doing a right click, only lets you move them to another folder, etc. but not clear them.

 

In the Mac version, the only way I was able to clear them was to click on the clock and clear them individually. Reminders that were from 2013, I found that I had to click on the clock twice, because the first click didn't give me the 'clear' (middle) button to chose from.

 

I'm sure with the new release coming up, it'll be fixed. I'm hoping too that Reminders will integrate with Google Calendar. This is the one thing that difficult with Evernote's reminders is that I have a hard time getting a real good bird's eye view of what's coming up. But I sure do appreciate the Evernote Team, and all you do for us.

I'm just learning Evernote, I have no idea how I accidentally created a "reminder" instead of a note, for the life of me I can't find the "create a reminder" button anywhere. I ended up just copying and pasting my text from the reminder note to a regular note, and then deleted the original reminder note. Very confusing.

Before this latest release, I was able to use the delete button on my keyboard to delete items. Now I only get a beep sound. It looks like the only way to execute a delete is by using the right button my the mouse for the pop-up menu, and selecting delete. 

 

This means I now need three operations where I used to use only one.

If you are referring to Notes, the Delete Note shortcut was changed to ⌘⌫ in EN Mac 6.3.

IMO, this is a great change, preventing accidental deletion of Notes.

I'm not sure if this has already been resolved - but I had the same issue: where I could not "delete" a reminder without deleting the note it was attached too. However, if you click on the reminder itself, and double-click the alarm clock icon in the upper-right hand corner of the screen you can "Mark As Done", "Clear Reminder", or "Change Date". The 2nd option will clear the reminder, removing it from your list, but not deleting the original note it was attached to.
