(Archived) Evernote freezes during syncing.

I've had this problem for over a year. I hoped there was going to be a patch but it perhaps this is a unique problem or for few people. Anyways, I'm posting it here so hopefully it will be fixed.

Syncing takes about 30 seconds even for a tiny text change to a note.

Usually it will say synchronizing promotions after a couple seconds. After about 10 seconds it will freeze. I won't be able to click anything and if I do, the top of my screen will show "Not responding".

I am using Windows 7 on a Lenovo Thinkpad. Evernote version 4.6.6.8360 (268868) Public.

Here is the Activity Log when I start syncing (see error in bold):

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Whilst I cannot read the above and give you an answer from the log, my thoughts would be to look at the web version of Evernote and compare it to your Windows version. My guess is there is an anomaly that it just cannot resolve for some reason.

If there is nothing obvious there and you have all the Notes on the web I would be tempted to back up the .exb files on your computer in case it all goes wrong, completely uninstall Evernote from your laptop (information on the forum which I don't have to hand if you search) then install again. I believe you will find this may solve your problem.

Failing that do contact support.

Best regards

Chris

Hi,

Just to add weight to Chris's suggestion, I have also done the same, and it fixed the (different) problem I was having. I did not even have to uninstall the EN program, just closed it (right click the Tray icon and quit Evernote), then deleted the files in the data directory (well, moved them elsewhere).

Re-loading all the content from the web server fixed my sync issue.

Tools > Options, and click the Open Database folder link. By the way, you should move all the files out of there, and not just move some. There will be files named
(yourname).exb, .exb.activitylog, .exb.bak, .snippets, and .thumbnails - mine also has .acccounts and .sessiondata - just select them all and shift them somewhere else.

Thank you thank you thank you!  Ever since I upgraded my Window EN client a few weeks ago, it would no longer sync, telling me the user name/password was invalid.  I could still access everything on the web, and from my android tablet and phone, but not desktop.  I have even been in contact with support and have had several back-and-forth suggestions with no help.  I did this and it fixed the problem immediately!

EDited - oops spoke too soon.  Yes, it now syncs with what is online but apparently I had quite a few notes in the desktop client that never got synced and so now are lost (other than being in the backup which I sent to Dropbox, thankfully).  So I need to figure out how to merge those I guess.

Thanks for the help, guys. Removing the files in the Database folder worked!

BTW, I remember uninstalling evernote before, but the problem remained. I'm not sure if the Database folder was removed in that case, or if I did a complete uninstall, if there is one.

I noticed when I was trying to copy the Database folder, that I got an I/O error (0x8007045D) on the <username>.exb file. This is probably the source of my problems with syncing. I figured I was able to view all my files on Evernote's website so I probably would be okay just deleting this folder. It goes to the recycling bin anyways.

Anyways, after deleting the folder, I was able to start evernote and it reloaded everything without error, and I so far have had no problems with syncing anymore.

Cheers!

Okay, to retrieve the notes that were in your local client only, is a little more tricky, but can certainly be done.

I don't use Dropbox so I'm not sure how the restore works. I'll assume you must restore to the original location.

The goal is create Exports of the lost notes and to import them into the good database.

Overview

1. Save away all the local files

2. Restore the Dropbox backup to the original location

3. Disconnect all netwroking to ensure the EN server does not receive a sync

4. Fire up EN local, and Export each of the local-only notes, to a local file

5. Put everything back, restore the files saved in (1), and re-import the individual notes

Details

1. Do the "Tools > Options, and click the "Open Database folder" link again, and move all the files to a save location on your PC.

2. In Dropbox, restore the Dropbox backup of that folder to the original location. You should see the files reappear in your My Computer view.

3. Disconnect all cable and wireless networking to ensure the EN server does not get updated at this point

4. Fire up EN local, and on each unsynced note, Export as Multiple Web Pages, each of the local-only notes. Note the asterisk in the "sync" column to indicate unsynced.

5. Quit EN

6. Copy the files saved in (1) back to your Database Folder. Copy, not move, for safety.

7. Start EN

8. Import the individual notes you exported.

9. If it all goes well, reconnect networking; otherwise, restore the backup and try again (i.e. repeat from step 5)
