saadme 0
Hi everyone I'm a medical student and use evernote to make and take notes, and i also store my PDF lecture notes and readings in it. I've started using the web clipped which is great - I click the link for the lecture note, it opens the PDF, and in Chrome, I click the Evernote web clipper button, select 'save PDF' and go from there. After syncing, the lecture notes appear as a new note in evernote in the notebook I selected. So far so good. However, I can only view these clipped PDF's in evernote - if I select "view as attachment" in Evernote, and then want to open it in Preview, it wont open, but it will open in Chrome or Safari. Furthermore, if I have selected 'view as attachment' and attempt to drag the attachment to the desktop, it does save as a pdf, but a file such as "raw_resource.php?resource_id=12523". Viewing as an attachment in Evernote also gives this nae If I first save the PDF from Chrome to my desktop, then drag it to Evernote and create a new note, the PDF behaves as a PDF, and has the correct filename. Double clicking the attachment in Evernote opens it in Preview. Can someone advise how to fix this? Its very annoying not being able to open the PDFs in Preview, and only really being able to view them as inline attachments in Evernote. Regards saad Link to comment
jbignert 473
Hi saad,Just made a simple test of this use case and for me it worked as expected. Can you post a URL to a PDF page that fails to display correctly after being clipped via Chrome? Also, I assume you are on Mac? What OSX version, Chrome version and Clipper version are you using? That will help us repro the issue. Link to comment
saadme 0
OSX 10.8.3 Evernote 5.0.5 Ok I just tested with this pdf: http://www.bolton.ac.uk/POD/WellBeing/images/BHF4.pdf And it worked properly. So this problem is with PDFs that are on my university site for instance: https://app.secure.griffith.edu.au/medicine/lg/includes/raw_resource.php?resource_id=12488 For some reason these URLs dont have .pdf' on the end, but are a pdf (screen shot below) Link to comment
jbignert 473
Hi saadme,Web Clipper can have some problems clipping many types of contents that is behind certain types of logins and also with PDF files not ending in .PDF in the URL.I'll see what we can do to improve this going forward, I realize this is an important use case for many out there. Thanks for the detailed reports. Link to comment
cchan 8
The problem is with the filename that we assign to the PDF attachment. We try to make a best guess at the filename of the PDF by looking at the URL. In the case where the URL ends with a ".pdf", it is simple (e.g. "BHF4.pdf"), but in the case where this is not true, it will give it a strange name like "raw_resource.php?resource_id=12523". Preview doesn't know how to handle that kind of file name, so it is unable to open it when you try to open it with "View as attachment". We can fix it so that the file doesn't have a name. The desktop client would automatically generate a name that ends with ".pdf" so that Preview can open it. Link to comment
