Dear all,

I just installed the Evernote3b version.
However, when I come up to the startup screen, I think I have a problem due to my environment (through a "proxy server").

I created my Evernote account fine.
Then I installed Evernote.
The initial setup screen came up fine, and I entered my User Name and Password.
I clicked Open, it said "Connecting...", and froze there.

Clearly, it can't get through the proxy. Usually what happens is that you can configure the application to use the proxy server through an application option. But I can't even start Evernote to see if it has such an option.

So my fundamental questions are:
1) Am I right that the freezing is because of my proxy server?
2) What can a user do to use Evernote 3 behind a proxy?
3) If it's not possible at this time, is there an appropriate person we can prostrate ourselves before to beg/plead/etc. for such functionality?

Thanks for any info.

I'm also using EverNote through a proxy server and noticed no problems till now. From my experience EverNote3 is automatically using the proxy-settings of the Internet Explorer for the Online-Connection. So there is currently no option in the application itself to enter proxy-informations.

2) What can a user do to use Evernote 3 behind a proxy?

Evernote uses the same settings as Internet Explorer has, so it all should be transparent. If you use other browser than IE, please set up appropriate proxy connection in IE just to make other software (not only Evernote) work as expected. To quickly check if your Internet Explorer is set up properly, try to open the https://preview.evernote.com/ address in it. If the site can't load, check IE connection/proxy settings. If the site opens fine, and only Evernote hangs on accessing the site, then the problem might be in your Firewall settings that block access to network for particular software. Try to check your firewall settings then, setting up a rule to allow Evernote to access http:// and https:// addresses (ports 80 and 443).

My Internet Explorer is set up to use the proxy server. That part seems ok. (I verified the settings).

When I go to your website through IE, I'm prompted for some info to go through the proxy server (by an automatic dialog on my local computer), and *then* I'm connected to your website. Other applications seems to also pop up this automatic dialog fine.

The problem is that when I open up Evernote3b and try to connect to your server, it doesn't prompt me for the "same info" by the automatic dialog. Thus, I believe it can't actually access the proxy server. Why it's not popping up the same dialog, I don't know at this point. Other applications seems to pop up this automatic dialog fine, so I don't quite know what would prevent it.

(Firewall-wise, I should be ok. I don't believe that is the issue for this specific item.)

If you have other thoughts, please post. Else I'll continue to think what else I could try.

Thanks for the prompt reply; seems like the problem is nailed down. I'll forward this to our developers for further investigation.

Just wanted to send another note.

Status is still the same for the latest build 3.0.0.542 .

When Evernote 3b comes up, I enter my login info.

It tries to connect, then it says: "Can't connect to server."

No "automatic dialog" pops up to ask for proxy info (like it does for other Windows applications).

Again, IE's proxy settings, etc. have already been set, and I can use IE itself successfully to get to the website. But I can't login via the "Evernote 3 Windows client".

Thanks for any more information.

We are currently finishing/testing this. Until the fix is publicly available, we can give you a special build to test if the fix helps in your particular case. If you are interested, PM me for details.

I don't know if this is related to a proxy issue (I'm behind one here at work), but when I try to synchronize the Windows client I get the following messages in the sync log:

09:37 0% Connecting to preview.evernote.com

09:37 0% TException: Can't end HTTP request, error: INTERNET_FORCE_RETRY

09:37 0% Session terminated abnormally, elapsed time: 0s

FYI: I have been getting the same errors for the last two updates (currently on 542) and haven't been able to synchronize from work (behind proxy too) since three versions ago.

Hi all,

I was also having the same issue, but the latest build iafanasyev sent me seems to have fixed the problem and now prompts me for my proxy username/password so I can authenticate and connect to the internet. Successfully downloaded all my online notes and uploaded a change. Get a hold of the special build and see if it works for you.

Hi all,

just reporting the same problem here. Windows, evernote 3.0.0.542 and an HTTP proxy. Seems next release will fix this. Great!

14:07 0% Authenticating user "XXXXX"
14:07 0% Connecting to preview.evernote.com
14:07 0% TException: Can't end HTTP request, error: INTERNET_FORCE_RETRY
14:07 0% Session terminated abnormally, elapsed time: 6s
14:08 0% Connecting to preview.evernote.com
14:08 0% TException: Can't end HTTP request, error: INTERNET_FORCE_RETRY

However...

I would to request a feature where I can tell evernote to use any proxy. Not necessarily the one IE uses.

Reason: the corporate desktop won't let me set the proxy and the proxy blocks many ports. I have access to another proxy at work that requires authentication (usr/pwd or through AD). I'd like evernote to use that proxy, not the corp. one.

Sincerely,

Chris.

I beilive same problem here:

I have problem starting Evernote. When I want to log in, Evenote takes 100% of CPU, then after some time, in "switch account / log in" window i get message "connection timeout". I have working fiber DSL connection (20/20). I've turned off my Sunbelt personal firewall... Same. Today I've installed Evernote on my work PC and it works great.

The problem with high CPU load definitely comes from Subnet personal firewall which we treat for now as incompatible with Evernote. I am not sure if turning the firewall off really disables it -- seems this is not enough in your case.

I have just installed Evernote 3.0.0.550 and it does not seem to be able to get through the firewall.

The firewall has a popup requesting my login when I open IE, and when I open up a second window.

I noticed others in this thread seem to have the same thing.

Did the fix talked about at the beginning of the month work? It is in the version I am using?

I'm getting same, and end of log looking similar:

16:03:59 [4336] 15% * 1m 53s (93%) spent in EDAM RPC

Strange thing is, the main PC (above) does it consistently, my workshop PC frequently (but mostly completes) and my laptop has worked every time, save once.

Numbers vary, but something similar to last line in log above appear each time, where 93 can be anywhere from 93-99.

We've been investigating this problem all day, and we think that we've narrowed this down to an intermittent issue on one of the routes that people can use to hit Evernote's servers.

If you see this problem, could you please run the "tracert www.evernote.com" command and post your results? We're suspicious about connections that include "internap.te1-3.ar1.snv2.gblx.net", which seems to be used in (e.g.) routes from Comcast.

Thanks

Oops, just realized my paste from a .cmd window truncates most of the info you need on the right.

I need to figure out how to get the full text from the command window onto the clipboard and in here.

Willing to do again if given a pointer

OK, googled around and refreshed myself on getting all the text trace out of a cmd window.

Starting on Sunday night (Pacific Time), we started to see sporadic problems with networking in and out of Evernote's servers. This resulted in slow synchronization and web access for some people. For some, the networking delays could even lead to "timeout" errors on their clients, which would disrupt synchronization completely.

After some investigation and debugging today, we narrowed down the problem to the "load balancer" servers that route network traffic back and forth from the outside world to our racks of servers. We bought these servers (Citrix NetScaler 7000 Enterprise, $15k each) three years ago, and they have been extremely reliable since then. They have been running for three years without any problems, and have been able to handle tens of millions of individual requests each day.

Unfortunately, we believe that we have recently passed the point where these boxes can handle our needs. We noticed that they were approaching the "85%" point about a month ago, and have been actively evaluating and testing replacement equipment in our test lab. The testing was scheduled to complete this week so we could order the replacement hardware for delivery next week.

The older equipment was pushed to the "100%" point at the start of the week, sooner than we expected. This was triggered by two recent changes that disrupted our gradual capacity growth:

1. To increase security for all of our users, we started to use secure SSL communications from all of our clients and web interfaces, even for Free users. Previously, Free users would only use SSL communication for the initial "log in" step. Since SSL communications are more computationally expensive, this led to a spike in our hardware's CPU usage.

2. We've experienced explosive growth from mobile devices synchronizing with Evernote. In particular, usage of our Android client grew by more than 1500% in 2010, and the recent versions offer synchronization options that trigger more frequent communication with our servers.

These two factors (combined with our rapid and accelerating growth) led to an overload in these older load balancers which cause them to have sporadic delays in routing information back and forth from our servers.

Since the new, high-end replacement equipment isn't available to deploy yet, we are rushing to address the current problems by moving a third NetScaler unit from our testing lab into the live Evernote service environment. In theory, we should be able to spread some of the load onto this box so that the other equipment falls back down into the comfortable zone. We are currently working to get this reconfigured and deployed safely in a way that won't disrupt the existing users who are able to synchronize properly. This requires a few extra networking changes that are still in progress.

We believe that this should address the immediate issues by tomorrow morning. In approximately two weeks, we should have our long-term solution involving new high-end equipment and new network links from separate top-tier carriers. This should give us enough capacity to handle the next 2 years of growth.

We do apologize for the inconvenience this is causing to people who are having problems synchronizing, and we appreciate your patience as we try to get this resolved.

---------------------------------------------------------

Update (January 3rd, 5am PST):

---------------------------------------------------------

We have enabled an additional load balancer which appears to have addressed the majority of the issues. We are still monitoring the situation in case additional problems occur.

---------------------------------------------------------

Edit (January 3, 7:55am PST):

---------------------------------------------------------

The new equipment was misbehaving for some connections, and we saw references to "out of memory errors" in its console, so we restarted it and now it seems to be operating smoothly. Please let us know if you're still seeing regular networking errors when you sync.

---------------------------------------------------------

Edit (January 5th, 1pm PST):

---------------------------------------------------------

The emergency fix that we did yesterday morning has improved networking and synchronization for many users, but other people are still reporting problems. Some people always get good performance, and other people seem to mostly get networking problems. This doesn't seem to be specific to any operating system or geographic locale, but it may be worse for people who are far from California. I've seen multiple reports from people who say that they can sync on one network and not another (e.g. they can sync their laptop at home, but not at work, or they can sync on their 3G phone but not their PC). So it seems to be some sort of interaction between the client's network and our servers.

My current best guess is that this variability may be caused by different "timeout" behavior by different networks, that some networks will consistently give up if a connection is too slow to establish, and others will work fine. So our overloaded balancers may be generally slow to establish connections, and this is handled worse by some networks than others. (But this is just a guess.)

To try to solve all of these problems, we have purchased three high-performance load balancers (A10 Networks AX 2500) to replace the older equipment. Our Operations team is going to try to deploy one of these units into the data center today. This is a bit of an emergency procedure that will probably result in some brief outages of various services through the rest of the day (e.g. 5 minutes at a time). If this procedure is successful, then we are hopeful that this will handle the load that we are currently experiencing.

I will post an update a later today once we see how this goes.

---------------------------------------------------------

Edit (January 5th, 7pm PST):

---------------------------------------------------------

We just deployed the new load balancer to handle all incoming traffic to http://www.evernote.com. It seems to be working well. It may take a little while for your DNS caches to update, but most people should start going through this new box within the next hour. We hope this will resolve the outstanding synchronization issues.

Do you load-balance by device? I can sync fine with my iPhone while the PC on the same WLAN has problems - I presume both take an identical route to evernote's servers. Additionally, I'm quite unsatisfied with your answer to the problem. I'm a paying customer and feel that I should be treated differently than a free user. Your approach distinguishes between new users and existing ones ... Why not throttle communication for free users?

Thanks for the update Dave.

I'm a premium user too, but wouldn't expect nor condone a two-tiered system of access to Evernote. The two-tiered aspect of free/premium in bandwidth allowances, file types allowed and the priority of text recognition in images is more than enough to differentiate between free and premium.

IMHO free users not always having access is a false economy. We all depend on the growth and success of Evernote so that Evernote continues to exist and develop in the future. The growth of Evernote depends on the use it for free, upgrade when you want model. Not allowing continuous access to free users would cripple that model.

Emergency reactive solutions such as this concern me as a paying customer. In order to keep me as a paying customer I have to know (not hope) this service works reliably. Yes outages do occur but what concerns me here is:

1) You took so long to diagnose the problem when you knew you had a system nearing capacity ("We noticed that they were approaching the "85%" point about a month ago, and have been actively evaluating and testing replacement equipment in our test lab"). This does not inspire confidence in me that your team has a complete understanding how your systems work and interact.

2) You are using equipment you haven't completely tested and are putting it into production to 'solve' the problem.

Additionally, I would hope as a customer service effort you will offer a time extension to affected users' accounts for this inconvenience.

it's now ok for me, EN syncs normally :)

For your information, yesterday with 2 PC on the same router, one (XP) did not synchronise (it had several notes for 20MB to upload) and for the other (W7) (nothing to upload) everything was fine.

No, the load balancers don't do anything intentionally different for iPhone versus PC, but the networking code on your computer or device may behave differently on different operating systems. I.e. if a server is slow to respond, your PC may give up and quit at a different point than iOS. Try again today and see whether it now works correctly.

TheGurkha -

Both Free and Premium users were in the same boat for these networking issues. The only distinction was whether Free clients would use SSL to send data back and forth to Evernote. We originally put SSL in the "services that cost us more money, so go to people who pay us" bucket. Now, we decided to bite the bullet and pay this cost for all users, including Free users.

Jpetrovski -

I do understand your frustration, and our Support staff will always give a refund whenever possible if a user isn't happy with their service. We will be discussing the reasons that this problem caught up with us in the way it did to prevent issues like this in the future. In the past year, we have more than doubled in size, both in users and in infrastructure, and we have avoided issues like this by more carefully monitoring our systems to prevent disruptions. This has allowed us to avoid the "we're overloaded" problems that have plagued some other growing Internet services, but this is a case where we were unsuccessful.

Thanks for the update. I was pleased to see that I had a successful sync from my Mac this morning (both uploading and downloading notes worked fine). As others have expressed, I am concerned about operating at 85% capacity when you know you are experiencing intense growth. I truly rely on Evernote throughout my day and the troubles have been quite a challenge.

Emails that I sent to EN yesterday morning have not made it to the web or my PC. An email sent this morning has synced. Should I assume yesterdays emails are lost? Allow some period of time for the system catch up? Thanks.

Also, totally unrelated, but so you know, there is a username CillNonee which is spamming multiple threads.

In that case, it's possible that the email was lost, although it should have been queued somewhere along the pipeline. I.e. I'm not sure where it could have gotten completely lost...

I can't find any 'CillNonee' user on the forum, or any obvious spamming when I skim the forum activity thread, but I'll spend a little more time on the general forums tomorrow after we catch a little sleep. I will note that I had sent in a whole bunch of email notes[1]. I also happen to run the mail server where I work (where the notes were queued). I'll note that last night (~20:00 CST) I flushed the queued email to Evernote. All of the email was sent to Evernote. My notes have been showing up, however, one at a time every 15 mins-2 hours since then.

I have faith they'll eventually show up.

Now... If only there was an offline Linux client, I'd be much less worse off if this would happen again... :)

In the past when this has happened Evernote has said reinstall the apps and the issue goes away, but then I have to wait for ages while I reset all my locally held notebooks and the data is downloaded yet again meaning that I can't work with Evernote until all the files have been downloaded and I can get at the information I need.

This is beginning to get really frustrating :-((

Only comment is for an outage like this, I'd make a service disruption notation on the evernote.com home page (rather than having to guess and browse the forums)

And remember, it's not that outages happened, it's how you (openly) deal with them that stands out.

Keep up the good work

We spent another 30 minutes trying to figure out why the "new" equipment we installed was randomly failing to finish the SSL handshake with some connections. We finally gave up and rebooted it, and now it's been working fine with no errors.

We're going to keep an eye on it, but please try again now ... we think that this is working again.

Just checked & both of my computers now have the same number of notes. (YAY!) Which means the ~100 notes I added to one computer yesterday, finally got sync'd to the 2nd computer. I'm also seeing more of the emailed notes (from yesterday) showing up.

True, good point. That has increased the number of bytes coming in to Evernote, but wouldn't have quite as much impact on the number of new SSL connections being made. So it wasn't the straw that broke the elephant's back, but it certainly didn't help matters.

Incredible product - Absolutely love evernote and I feel for their support team that has to deal with this right in the new year.

I also have sent about a dozen emails yesterday and today, and some have been sync'ed and others are still missing. Like others, some of my later emails have been sync'ed and others are still missing.

What's scary for me is that I received no bounce back message for the missing emails, and have to manually reconcile my sent items to my Evernote notebook... That's the only way for me to figure out what emails didn't get sync'ed.

Like many others I use Evernote as a critical part of my workflow and it's scary to know that some emails are randomly missing and there's no bounceback or undeliverable error. I'm unfortunately going to stop using evernote as part of my workflow.

I still love the product and will keep using it, it's still worth every penny. It's just too bad I can't rely on it. Hopefully in the future the email feature will be bulletproof or at least have a reliable bounce notification if something doesn't go through.

or at least have a reliable bounce notification if something doesn't go through.

If you read the thread(s), you'll find it's not that the emails are bouncing. They have been received. They just weren't being added to our accounts. As of today, most of us are seeing emails sent yesterday being added to our accounts.

If you choose to leave EN, that's certainly your choice. But no need to cite an inaccurate reason.

and RE: Missing emails.

If you read the thread completely you will notice that many users are reporting the exact same issue. Some emails are being sync'ed and others are not. And there's no rhyme or reason as to which emails are being synchronized.

Example: I sent emails #1 through #10. Email #3, #7 and #9 were sync'ed, and there's no sign of emails 1,2,4,5,6,8 or 10.

Hope that clears things up. Let me know what is inaccurate.

Hello:

I write only because the entry above this indicates that you believe you have resolved the current issues.

Yesteday I had no ability to forward emails and intermittent synching problems.

Things seemed to be back to normal this morning (US CST). Since about 10:00 a.m., however, I have not been able to sych from either my iPad or my desktop. It seems to be hanging up at the authentication stage, then timing out.

I am also once again unable to forward emails.

Again, I'm passing this along just in case you think everything is hunky dory, when it's not.

I'm still having problems too. Was able to sync this moring from home, but not from work.

Not sure of what firewall/router we have here. Log says my database is same as whats online but I know thats not true.

Heres a partial log file, the names have been changed to protect the guilty:

I guess I misunderstood this part:

I'm unfortunately going to stop using evernote as part of my workflow.

Emails from last night are trickling into my EN inbox.
I haven't had time to fully follow up, but I did see one of the AWOL email notes from yesterday morning, did show up on one computer... I'll have time to followup more closely, a bit later.

Thanks to Dave & the EN staff who apparently spent the night working on this & trying to get it resolved.

UPDATE: Found a second AWOL email note from yesterday morning...

And from other threads on the subject:

Interestingly, just after the brief period of being unable to access Evernote, my desktop client updated and shows one of the missing e-mails - the first one. So there's hope the others will turn up.
All my missing notes have FINALLY APPEARED YES! Looks like they are back up for now.......and yes i will echo what he said.......YOU DON'T KNOW HOW BAD YOU NEED SOMETHING TILL IT'S GONE!!!

Its strange, I'm having problems with one machine only.

IE opens all sites fine, BlackBerry syncs fine, desktop PC syncs fine. The laptop hasn't been doing it since last Friday.

I have had the same problems as all of the above. Indeed the connection is going through "internap.te1-3.ar1.snv2.gblx.net".

Please resolve this as soon as possible, this is one of the programs that I have come to depend on because of how much I like it.

Thanks for the good work.

Still not fixed for me. The client just sits there at 50% while trying to sync, and the website won't load (eventually I get a server connection reset). The iphone app seems to be working, but that's all. The client log just says

11:31:49 [2860] Received status code 200 when accessing URL http://update.evernote.com/public/ENWin4/update.xml

11:31:49 [2860] AutoUpdate: no update found, remote revision is 115112, local revision is 116979

I tried force quitting it and reloading, but it still does the same. Other people on twitter are reporting issues too. Emails are being picked up by the iphone client, so that's good. But if I want to do any Rich editing, I'm kind of stuck right now.

Having the same problem. It's frustrating and wasting time. Sync is going thru the suspect Comcast router. Interestingly my cell phone syncs fine (via Verizon Wireless).

If you're having problems on a Mac, can you try logging in to your account on the web from Safari and say whether that works without problems?

If you're having problems on Windows, can you try logging in from IE?

This will use the same networking transit to the same machines that are used for sync, so it should exercise the same networking. (Don't use Chrome, Firefox, etc. ... those don't use the same operating system networking layers that we do.)

If the browser works fine, but your client won't sync, can you please try a reboot just to completely clear out any cached DNS entries, etc.?

Thanks
