(Archived) How do I keep one category of notes private?

Recommended Posts

I've got these notes in a notebook by themselves, but they show up in All Notes, and in many searches for other notes.

Is there anyway to tag these notes to keep them from showing up? A password? A special tag? An option to have the default "All Notes" return all but these notes, etc?

Hi. Welcome to the forums.

You could tag all of the notes "private" and then do a search including "-tag:private" to keep them from showing up. The same thing would work if they were in a private notebook: "-notebook:private".

Note: this is only if you can construct a search that can use this. If you're using an any: search (e.g. any: tag:X tag:Y, in other words, all notes containing either tag X or tag Y) , then tacking on a -tag:private isn't what you want, probably. Also, -notebook:private is not a valid search term ('-' cannot apply to the notebook: search term).

Heidi, it will NOT be easy to always keep you "private" notes hidden.  If you use a Tag of "Private" you will always have to include -tag:Private in every search.  "All Notes" will not work for you.

So, your best bet may be to create a separate EN  account for your private notes.  It is now easy to switch accounts on most platforms.  The down side is that you will NOT be able to search BOTH you private notes and other notes at the same time.

All notes is just that...all notes. The only way to keep them from being in your search results is to either use a search on a single notebook or, if you want to use all notes, apply & negate them by using a tag as mentioned by GM & Jefito.  As Jeff mentioned, you cannot negate a notebook.

It just goes to show what happens when you only have one notebook (me). You give out misleading advice!

Actually, I think EN has grown & expanded so much in the last year that it's hard for most of us (users) to keep up.  (Which is a good thing!)  At one point, I think I knew EN Windows inside & out like the back of my hand.  Can't say that now, since I just recently discovered the 'rotate image' command.  :P   Keeps us on our toes, eh?
