Hi. Welcome to the forums.

Here are some tips, if you're looking to get that organizational monkey off your back.

Here are links to some more mainstream strategies.

I find that a balance between notebooks and tags work well for organising my notes. I have a few broad categories around which I set up notebooks:

- a 'personal' notebook where various daily life stuff, such as shopping lists, directions of how to get places, reference numbers for cinema tickets, etc

- three 'work' notebooks where everything related to my main job (research) goes

- notebooks for specific, time limited work projects (e.g. a particular conference I'm organising)

- an IT notebook where anything tech related goes

- a 'books' notebook where I dump any screen shots and references to books I might want to read in the future

Then, within those broad categories, I use tags as a main organising tool. I like tags because

i) they are flexible, you can assign a note to more than one category, and it's very easy to search notes based on (mutliple) tags

ii) it makes it easy to create connections between content in Evernote and content in other apps on my mac. For example, I have a particular work flow where content is connected from Bookends, via DevonThink, to Evernote - the tags transfer automatically as I link/export data from one app to another - which creates consistency across my hard drive, and extends that consistency on to my iPad and android phone.

Like GM, I also like to create links between notes if I feel I need to create a stronger association between two notes than just the tag.

But that's just one example and there are countless other ways of setting up you Evernote - I guess the key question you should start with, is what job do you want Evernote to do for you?

Lots of good ideas above - I can only contribute the thought that Evernote can do exactly what you want it to whatever that may be.  You can have complicated numerical tags to signify the source / topic / date / project of each note,  or you can skip notebooks and tags and depend on reasonably intelligent note titles and the super search engine.  I get frustrated with complex tagging processes,  because I can never remember 2) the correct order of codes to apply and 2) to tag notes when I'm supposed to.

I also started out with a lot of paper to scan,  so started throwing content into Evernote so I could clear the decks - which also gave me some real-life experience of the sort of problem I would encounter,  and allowed me to change a few things on the fly.

Whether or not you plan on getting your detailed strategy sorted out before you get 'seriously' started I'd very much recommend choosing a project,  or a filing cabinet,  or a specific hobby;  and start Evernoting everything to do with it now.  That will give you a better appreciation of what's possible,  and -hopefully- the confidence to go forward.

Oh - and courtesy of Jamie Todd Rubin (the paperless guy) - you will need the best scanner you can afford,  and a really really good staple extractor!

Those links no longer work. If you know of any other basic getting started tutorials, I'd be interested (I think EverNote should have this guidance on the site, but I can't find it). As a newbie and someone without a lot of time, I have been trying to use Evernote to help me get organized but am not having much success.

Hey guys, I'm still looking for a system to help me organise Evernote and my life in general.

Is there an official guide from Evernote I could look at? Is there a 'best selling book' or 'best method' I could look at?

Thank you!

Welcome to the forums. There is no official Evernote guide, besides the links posted in my signature. There is no "best method," though the links I posted above will send you to various strategies. There is no "best" selling book (many books, many languages), but I think Brett Kelly's Evernote Essentials is probably the most frequently mentioned as a reference (Brett is an Evernote employee).

Alright, thanks a lot.

I just looked at Brett Kelly's book and it looks pretty good.

However, I need help with how to set goals. Does anyone know of something I could look into for help with this?
