(Archived) Must Have Evernote Scanner

Recommended Posts

I've been using Evernote for a year and I love it!! - I keep all my notes on it, pictures of the kids, reminders... I don't even use my PC, I access everything from my Galaxy.

Christmas, my wife bought me a present - A scanner - I don't think she realized how great it would be - She bought me a Fujitsu iX500 scanner - It opened up a new world for me. - I now scan everything - And I mean EVERYTHING!! - I gave away our filing cabinet - everything is in evernote - and so easy to find. I even scan supermarket receipts

of course I had to read about it - I  this site very helpful - http://a-sale-on.com/wireless-fujitsu-scanner-price-and-review-fujitsu-scansnap-ix500-evermore-scanner/  (maybe a little pushy but so right)

If you have only a regular scanner you're really missing out on the strength of evernote - With old scanners you only scan the few pages you need - This is a totally different idea. You scan drawers and drawers of documents in no time - everything gets filed on evernote. Just like using evernote you can do it all from your galaxy or blackberry or whatever you have

Welcome to the forums - I'm a ScanSnap user (S1500) and occasionally get accused of being over-obsessed with scanning everything but you're right - I used to have a room cluttered with filing;  now it's just cluttered with non-paper junk,  and I'm working on that...

Hi. Welcome to Evernote and the paperless world!

I agree that the ix500 is impressive. I just got one myself after using the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 for a few years. The S300 is still going strong, but upgrading from it to the ix500 was like changing from a bicycle to a car. It has been really nice to watch the pages fly through, and the scanner's ability to detect misfed pages (sometimes, it grabs two or three at once) is a huge help.

As you go along on your paperless journey, I strongly recommend a regular backup system (I use Time Machine on the Mac) and keeping copies of those backups in multiple physical locations to protect against fire, theft, and natural disasters. The power of going paperless is that you can have multiple copies of your data, so make sure to take advantage of it!

Personally, I scan everything, and I only put a few things into Evernote (http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/29245-how-to-optimize-your-evernote-experience/#entry173506), but everyone has their own approach. One great blog post you'll want to read is Jamie Todd Rubin's at http://www.jamierubin.net/2012/05/15/going-paperless-to-scan-or-not-to-scan-that-is-the-question/ However, he has also written a lot more at http://www.jamierubin.net/going-paperless/

Enjoy!

I'd like to chime in on this discussion because, even though, I don't own a Fujitsu iX500 scanner as you mentioned "

AlbertWhite" I do own an all-in-one Epson printer/scanner/fax. Now even though I agree with you for going paperless, there are other people in my household who aren't just there yet. For those people, I still need to use this type of device. Also, for those people whom I do business with who also haven't just yet bitten the 100% paperless bug, I also need to have this type of device. Now for me, I would say that my all-in-one is able to scan directly to Evernote using the "import folder" option. When I scan something, the only extra step I might have to do outside of what you might do with your device is to close the scanning window. After that, I check my Evernote account and all of my documents are right there available for my use. So I don't agree with you when you say - "If you have only a regular scanner you're really missing out on the strength of evernote - With old scanners you only scan the few pages you need - This is a totally different idea. You scan drawers and drawers of documents in no time - everything gets filed on evernote. Just like using evernote you can do it all from your galaxy or blackberry or whatever you have". With my "regular scanner" I'm able to do exactly what you do with your Fujitsu iX500 scanner and more, I might add.

Thought I'd share my recent experience to this very topic. As gazumped above, I'm a scan snap 1500 user and scan everything into my google drive (which then gets backed up) and the original shredded. I recently had to return something to walmart so I printed the receipt from my account to take to the store. To my surprise, it seems that Walmart (and other stores apparently) need ORIGINAL receipts to credit the return back to you. I was only given a store credit... Guess that's the flip side of being too 'paperless'.

Keep that in mind before you scan and shred everything.

Unfortunately, some merchants do not honor their promises as they should. Receipts also fade over time, because the ink and paper is so poor. I suppose they would not honor that either. In the case of Walmart, they used to have a way to contact them and have a receipt made for you, and I imagine the electronic version would significantly aid the process. They really ought to have mentioned this to you (assuming it still exists).

The warning is a good one, though. There are a few things in life that still need originals, so be careful with receipts for high-value items, etc.

I'll endorse the 'keep some paper' thing - in the UK most stores obstinately stick to wanting a paper receipt if you have the temerity to take something back.  While it is possible to reason with most of them, it just makes life easier to hang on to receipts for a year at least.  I still scan all receipts so Evernote can tell me which month I bought something,  and whether I kept  the receipt.  I then can go to that envelope of the 12 I keep and look through the half-dozen or so receipts in there pretty easily.  If there are any over 12m old I'll normally bin those (except for really high-value or long-warranty stuff) to keep my little filing system reasonably slim.
