Bunch of notes listing gifts from people to other people.

Tags are: Jane,John,Gift

problem: Did Jane give John the gift or....?

One way around might be to use author. Author would be the gift giver.

Or should i setup tags like "to:john" etc.?

Yeah, the author field could work to uniquely identify one end of the transaction (from). Otherwise, you could put unambiguous tag names or strings inside the notes. You might get better results with the underscore character, which is treated like a letter/number for words:

to_john

from_alice

otherwise, you'd need to use quotation marks when you search.
