Jase333 0
So after recording and taking notes in history today I lost the entire lecture and the note is completely blank. It also blanked out the lecture I took down the week before! It says the file size is way to big to be blank. Please help me retrive this file back. Willing to try almost anything. Thanks in advance. Level 5* gazumped 10,369 Posted January 16, 2013 Level 5* Share Posted January 16, 2013 Welcome to the Forums, and I'm sorry about your problem, but I think we might need a little more information before we can make any suggestions - what OS and client are you using, what steps did you go through at the end of the history session, when did you find out you lost the notes and what says the file size is too big? And have you looked in the web client to see if your notes are there? Link to comment
Jase333 0
It's there online!!! Yes, but not in my evernote app its blank. Any idea how to fix this? I'm running OS X 10.8.2 Link to comment
C6REW 416
Hi Jase,Whilst I think this may be a case of raising a support ticket, it could be worth having a look at the 'Log' file after a sync. It might give you an idea as to what is going wrong.I am guessing that something has been changed on the web version at the same time as something on the computer. Are you using an iPad to take your notes? Did you try to access and use the web version on the iPad? If, so I suggest at this stage leaving the iPad web version alone as it is not too good at the moment. Any additional information you can give us would be helpful.Best regardsChris Link to comment
Jase333 0
Only using a Macbook air, no iPad. So after I found out its online and not on my app I edited it on the online version of evernote and synced it. Logged out of the app and back in and it fixed the note, although the recording of my lecture is completely gone.. Atleast I got my notes back. I guess I'm just lucky this happened early in the semester and not at a more critical time. Also the recording of the lecture a WEEK before just decided to delete itself too. Am I doing something wrong here or what? I was really wanting to use evernote for my classes but it just doesn't seem reliable. Is there a way to back my files up after class so this never happens again? Also if anyone has a clue on how to salavge my recording of the lectures that were saved to the notes I'd highly appreciaite it. Thanks guys. Can provide anymore details just let me know! Just download Audacity and move files into Evernote when you finish. I cannot help much with this particular problem, and I strongly recommend contacting customer support (see my signature below), but I can offer a solution for the future. RecorderPro is an iPhone app that records in the background while you are using other apps. This is pretty uncommon on the iPad. It also has a lot of settings to optimize the recordings, and it is all easily downloaded onto your computer without having to go through iTunes. Pretty nice, right?Evernote's recordings are fine, and I am not trying to knock them, but the size is limited and so is the audio quality. I guess I like the ability to customize my recordings as needed, and I prefer to have multiple backups of the recordings as well. If you keep the sound quality relatively low so that the file size does not go over 25 MB (Free accounts) or 100 MB (Premium), then the only difference in your workflow is that you will have to email / drag the sound file into the note after class. No big deal, right? Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 10,369 Posted January 16, 2013 Level 5* Share Posted January 16, 2013 Pending any comments from more Mac users, I'd suggest you report the issue to the Support team as they're really the only vague chance you have of recovering anything from Evernote. Normally what you see on the web version is all that you have. It sounds very much as though the recording was somehow lost before it synced with the server, so there's nothing to recover from there - but you never know; and the Elephant's little helpers are quite resourceful when they can be.You still seem to be operating on the basis that this was some sort of bug, but I think the problem is most likely to have been a hazard of mobile computing in a busy world. Once you've created or edited a note, you must sync with the server so you have a remote backup, or copy your Evernote database to another location (DropBox et al) just in case something goes wrong. When you next open Evernote on any machine, the first thing to do is a manual sync, so you know you're working with the current version of the note. That may sound complicated, but it's like looking both ways before you cross the road - pretty simple and best practice to avoid unwelcome surprises.Having said all of which. You may have a 'conflicting changes' notebook that you didn't know you had - go look in there for stray notes. And check in your Trash folder too.Good luck!Edit: GM got there first!! Link to comment
Jase333 0
So after I complete a note sync it right away? Then drag it to dropbox to insure the file is not going to be lost? Never heard of dropbox but I'm gonna search it and look into it. Just now starting to learn about all these new gadets and apps so not that advance, yet! I'll look into that app but like I said I have no iPad nor and iPhone only my Macbook air. Thanks again fellas for the help. Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 10,369 Posted January 16, 2013 Level 5* Share Posted January 16, 2013 Dropbox is a web storage facility, and there are various other similar offerings including Google and Microsoft. Sounds like you're going to be a bit paranoid about syncing and saving from now on. Now in this instance, that's probably a good thing... Link to comment

Thanks again fellas for the help.*start of DropBox promotion* I run on a desktop Mac with an iPad as my mobile gadget. DropBox is very easy to use and AWESOME! It works across multiple devices, and is essentially a cloud that holds whatever data you put there. Once you have a DropBox account, I highly recommending putting COPIES in your DropBox. I occasionally forget to hit the Option key when moving files to DropBox, only later to panic when I cannot find them on my desktop machine - then later realize after a quick Search that I moved the originals into DropBox.DropBox also allows you to decide what folders are private, public, and invite only - so if you have friends in the same class with DropBox, you can share files there just as easily as through EverNote. (though without all the handy tags, etc.) I even use it to share photos with family, and they share new items with me - it's like our own private share space, with the only limitation being storage amount. *end of DropBox promotion*As far as your EN synching issue is concerned, definitely open a ticket. I haven't had this issue yet, but then I haven't been recording 30-40 minutes of audio to synch. The issues could be multiple, or singular - but I am glad you were able to retrieve your text-based notes! And I agree with @gazumped: One thing I always do when I get on my desktop is hit the manual synch, just to make sure I'm working with the latest and greatest files. Otherwise you can find yourself with quite the mess! Link to comment
C6REW 416
Hi Jase,I had not taken on board that you 'record' your lectures. If you do, I personally use the Livescribe Sky pen and have found it superb for this. If you are not aware of it the pen links to Evernote. Great product.I think all our resident 'experts' have given you some great advice with the key one being, 'raise a support ticket' like NOW. Just to see if you can get that recording back.Best regardsChris Link to comment
