Mac or windows Offline Notebooks?

JTaylor

Idea

Hey all,

So I have been using EN for a little bit and starting to really play with my organization using note titles, tags, and notebooks and I am trying to figure out how EN treats notebooks on a PC/mac. If I open up EN and sync all my notes to my PC or mac and then go somewhere without internet do I have access to all my notes and their attachments? From what I can tell from my testing I have all the headers but can't pull up the content and definitely not any attachments.

I travel a lot and would like to be able to work with my notes while travelling but as far as I can tell I only have limited access to the note content. Is this an expected behavior for EN or an error in my setup. And if it is expected, can I take a notebook and make it "offline" (on a mac or pc) like you can in the mobile versions of EN?

I hope this hasn't been already asked as it seems like a easy/common question, but my searching on the forums turned up nothing.

On a side note I do find it interesting that the forum for a company whose software is built around amazing search capability has such rough search functionality in their forum.

Thanks in advance!

The WIndows and Mac clients store their note databases entirely on the local device; once they're sync'ed you should be able to use the notes regardless of whether you have internet access or not. The mobile clients are a different matter; there, if you're a premium user, you can designate a notebook as "offline", in which case, its contents will stay resident on your device (after syncing), and you can use the notes in that notebook without being connected to the internet.

Forum search remains a work in progress (i.e., Evernote knows about it and is working get it right). Evernote did not develop the forum software.

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I tried it again today and it seems to have worked fine. Yesterday when I was trying it wouldn't open any of the attachments. Perhaps just a glitch or likely, user error. ;-D

As for the forum, I figured they were working on it, and assumed it wasn't their product development. It was a bit more of a side note because I hate having people post the same questions a hundred times on a forum when it has been asked and answered so I try to avoid doing it as much as possible. So I normally search for my question first as much as possible. Thanks for the heads up though.

No matter how well search works, there are still folks who don't think to use it, so we get a fair amount of repeats on questions. It's just a sad fact of user forums. That being said, I like to use search (often to find answers for those repeated questions), and it would be nice if it worked better here.

FWIW, I've found Google more helpful than the board search. I just Google the words discussion, evernote & any other terms I'm looking for, including the name of the poster (if I remember). Including the word 'discussion' *tends to focus* on the message board postings.

Hi

Is there a way to take EN notes on a MAC client OFFLINE? I love EN and have been using it to store photos as well however it is quickly taking up harddisk space. I am a premium client and so I like how on the mobile apps you are able to take these notebooks offline to save space. Someone please advise

Hi. Welcome to the forums!

There is currently no way to accomplish selective sync on the desktop versions of the app, though the feature has been requested, and Evernote in early podcasts even recognized a need for it by calling it inevitable. I have some advice for optimizing your experience.

1. You could also consider having one account for data on the cloud and another for data on your local drive.

2. Some users have been storing their data off their main drive, but Evernote is not set up to do this on the Mac, so it is an un-supported workaround.

3. Set up one account with one notebook (let's call it inbox) shared from your main account. Sign in only to your second account on your local drive. Only the data in that shared notebook will be downloaded. You can make notes and put them into this notebook while keeping a browser window open for your main account, moving notes as needed or searching data there. It works pretty smoothly, in my experience.

Can someone help advise whether the mac edition of EN has the ability to support taking certain notebooks offline? EN is starting to take up a lot of memory resources and I the offline function that the IOS app has would be great to apply to my MAC. Many thanks

I'm moving this post to the existing thread, where I have already tried to answer your question. One thread for the topic is sufficient.
