(Archived) List Notebooks Manually

Recommended Posts

Hello

I want notebooks listed my own way as there is no way to have the following list order

1) Personel

2) Business

3) Games

Add a feature called sort order where I can specify what book to place in list first, second and so on

Thanks

Hello. Welcome to the forums!

This is a topic that comes up every so often. I don't know if Evernote plans to add this feature, but if you are interested in why the app is the way it is, you may want to listen to the podcast (see link below). Here are a couple of posts I have made before on the topic:

Hi. Welcome to the forums!

I didn't even know this thread existed. I have been wanting the same thing, but I haven't been able to express it very clearly, and here we are with a simple solution: a manual sort order. Yes. This is what I want.

I do a lot of writing, amongst other things, and I would appreciate the ability to arrange and re-arrange notes freely. Once you have more than a handful of notes, the renaming process to change the sort (using sort by title) or re-dating process (using sort by created date) becomes quite laborious, and on some platforms (the iOS), the re-dating option isn't available.

My current workaround is to create a note full of note links. Then, it is a relatively simple matter to cut/paste in order to change the order. This works well enough, but it isn't quite the same, because you are jumping from note to note instead of seeing them all lined up conveniently in the center pane. We cannot make note links on mobile platforms yet, so this is only an option if you are using desktops.

It isn't a deal-breaker or anything, but the ability to manually determine the search order could potentially affect a lot of users. Complaints about the inability to pin notes to the top, GTD folks, writers, users preparing a kind of "slide show" of notes with photographs, and people sharing notebooks (multiple users with multiple naming conventions make things a bit messy).

I just remembered (thanks to my external brain) that Evernote talked about something like this in Podcast number 12 (http://blog.evernote...pping-and-more/). Dave (technical guy at Evernote) gave a clear explanation about why things are the way they are (see 26:41-28:05) with the current sort system. The podcasts often contain interesting bits of information like this. I've got the entire list of them on my site (at the bottom of the pagehttp://www.princeton...multimedia.html).

You could experiment with a naming scheme. Something like this:

1Personal

2Business

3Games

or this:

..Personal will make this notebook jump to the top.

.Business will sort the notebook to 2nd place etc.

Why don't you use tags? You can accomplish the same and have less notebooks (which is better).

Good suggestion. But, if the OP has more than 10 notebooks, it would probably be best to do 01, 02, etc. I agree about the tags, though I would still like to see a manual sort myself :)

Also been using TAG's I'm still a little new to evernote and trying to find a better way to organize. I would really like to use it as my number one tool. I think it's a great one.

Because of that I would end up having lots of books and tags

I'm planning to use 1name 2 name for now, put its just not professional looking :)

Funny you had to make a site about it. :)

I wonder if I can write API's for it.

a simple 2- line programme

if [bookname] starts with #

open string [bookname]

remove # and add number to temp sort order

create list

save list in my document folder

If i select Custom List Order

Load/Open the mylist file

LOL. Yeah. It could basically be summarized in one phrase: YYMMDD + keywords.

But, the devil is in the details. What do you do with a PDF of a book? What do you do with something in the future? What do you do with a bibliography? What do you do with a source that has no known dates? I consider these to be relatively minor points, but they are worth sorting out and writing about.
