(Archived) HELP: Evernote, Windows, and Macrons (ā, ī, ū, ē, ō) [RESOLVED]

I want to type macrons (ā, ī, ū, ē, ō) in Windows, but cannot. Do you know how?

On the Mac, you just type alt+a and then the letter. With an external keyboard on the iPad and iPhone, it is the same. And, with the virtual keyboard on any device, holding down a vowel like "a" will bring up the option. On Windows, as far as I know, only Word works (Insert Symbol). In other words (pun intended), no global macron option.

It's a small thing, but for me, it means the difference between using Mac or Windows. It's also not an Evernote-specific issue, but because most of my work is done in Evernote, it seems relevant to post here.

A slightly sideways suggestion, but are there any specialised windows fonts that include Macrons? I seem to remember it should be possible to design your own font if there are no existing examples. All you have to do then is choose a few characters you don't want and replace them !

Interesting thought. In Word, some fonts have the macrons, and you use insert symbol (I set a shortcut) to access them. So, the fonts are out there. Perhaps I could design my own by just copying (?) over these. A little beyond my current tech capabilities, and certainly time-consuming to overcome the learning curve, but an option to consider!

GrumpyMonkey, I think you could do it with AHK, though you would have to write it yourself. You would also need the Unicode version of AHK_L

I guess there are some other applications out there that could do it, what they are though, is beyond me...

Great idea. I'll look into it!
