(Archived) HOWTO: Apply tags automatically? [NOT CURRENTLY POSSIBLE]

Recommended Posts

I have been using the old, fat client version of Evernote, for years, since you previous company did not allow anything to be stored on-line. Recently, I upgraded to the current version. One fo the features I loved in the old version was that I could define tags with keywords and any note I entered that contained the keyword would automatically be tagged. I can't find how to set this up in the current version. Does this functionality still exist or must all notes be manually tagged now? Thanks for your help.

Automatic tagging does not exist in the Windows version of Evenote.

I use a manual method with a library of saved searches to find missed tags for people, places, and things.

For instance if I want to find any note that contains Paul Ryan, but is missing his tag, I will search for:

notebook:Politics "Paul Ryan*" -tag:"Ryan Paul"

Yes, it is manual and tedious, but it gets the job done.

I think that someday we may see that again (I have no direct evidence on that, but it's just too useful). And the web clippers - at least the Chrome clipper that I use -- do auto-tagging, although it's all automatic, and not rule-based.

Yeah. Though I do wish that Evernote would publish some details about how they Smart File tags. The suggestions vary from correct (amazed that it was suggested), to spot on and expected, to completely out to lunch.

I do know that it involves some back end magic at the service.

Yeah. I asked about this in the Clippers forum, and my question has so far gone unanswered.

EDIT: Actually, I asked about how we can better teach the clipper. I'd really like to be able to issue some instructions about this, but so far Evernote hasn't helped out.
