I just posted this in another thread....

Evernote decide their own priorities based on a number of factors that seem to include (to a small extent) user feedback. Beyond giving that feedback that you have done already there is no other method.

The next major release of the clients should have the underlying changes needed to support this in the future. (We're adding support for the 'style' attribute to our HTML-derived markup format.)

Then we can add UI support for highlighting in the future.

Thanks

Awesome. Highlighting would be much appreciated. Thanks for all the work. :D

I can't believe text highlighting has not been included in evernote 3.5 !

I must say your web page is deceptive because it shows text highlighted.

I realised only after having installed evernote 3.5 that it was only in case of search, that the result get highlighted, so what a big deal !, (1h30 time wasted).

I am disappointed

this is the one feature you terribly lack and has kept me away from using evernote for nearly 1 year

too bad

Good luck with the highlighting request. Based on past examples, in order for user feedback to be effective, it requires many different users requesting the feature over many months or years. When it starts to raise the attention of an Evernote employee, their response might sound a bit more positive.

But just be prepared for a long slog (translation: "soon" in Evernote speak).

Oh jbenson, surely you exaggerate. I challenge you to name one feature you've been requesting for years that hasn't been implemented yet. :D

As you have probably noticed, last year I officially gave up on the "coming soon" Due Date column for Evernote.

So I will stick with my all time favorite request - The automatic adjusting outline format using the standard Chicago Manual of Style. (with tongue in cheek)

G'morning...I tried searching for this feature and couldn't find anything: does Evernote include a highlighter tool for captured Web pages, a la Google Notebook? I'm currently running the free version; is it only available for the paid version?

I can finagle a workaround by converting everything to PDF, but would like to avoid the extra step.

Thanks!

hiliting will come some day i think, but if you are really eager to see it, i'd participate in beta testing (see your preferences). i doubt highliting will make it into the blog, and even if they did mention highlighting, it would likely be long after it makes it into the beta.

So are you saying you'd like to see hyliting as a beta item?

Simple suggestion to the Evernote Ivory Tower:

Would you kindly consider adding a highlighting function in Evernote?

(You know, much like gmail has one?)

I never noticed how incredibly much I love highlighting things, in real life, AND on the "internets".

I've noticed that I've been using Evernote like CRAZY to collab with many of my teammates. We log in from around the world to share and update a common account... which is much cooler than sending endless gmail rounds to each other.

But the ONE thing I miss most from collaborating with endless gmail threads is the abilty to highlight the most impactful "take aways".

Should be an easy fix, right? Adding a highlighter? Right next to the text color change?

Love ya much, Evernoters!

Anne

Thanks for the feedback. There are a few infrastructure changes that are required to support highlighting, since highlighting can't be expressed in "classic" HTML. We're working on those infrastructure changes this quarter so that we can do something like this in the future.

Thanks

I just upgraded to premium and use evernote for most of my college note taking. However, the lack of a simple highlight function is a pretty big setback.

Are there any plans to incorporate this in the near future? I realize that there is a workaround of changing the document colour etc.. but it is not very efficient.

1. My first request to add hilighting.

2. My deep and heartfelt thanks for Evernote.

3. My complete understanding that it will be here when it gets here.

Deverill, I hope you don't mind me repeating this word for word for whenever I request a feature.

I have a request - it would be great if everyone could spell highlighting correctly - it's highlighting....

uh-oh, next we'll be having grammar classes. Say it ain't so! gd&r, vvf

It's not my fault mom, it's that darn speech-to-text app . . .

Sorry, Metrodon. I didn't realize that such an informal gathering as this required a precise attention to details of grammar and spelling. For someone who wants perfection, this is the type of spelling up with which one will not put.

Good luck to you, my friend, for your crusade is a sizable one when even companies like Sharpie use that spelling: http://goo.gl/fESgx

It does seem remarkable that as an organization, while they have completely independent teams dedicated to each individual platform, that at least once a week ALL the teams don't get together and say what each has accomplished...sort of a show and tell.

Where did you hear that Evernote does not do this?

Pure speculation, I don't know they don't do this. But, IMHO, the time gap between items that aren't available across all platforms seems to suggest this. Evernote Food and Evernote Hello have been released on some platforms, but not on others. I have no claim to any knowledge about how long it takes to develop for one platform (AppleOS), and how much longer it takes to develop for another platform to get the same thing (Android, Bberry), but the gap that Android users have to wait in most cases seems wide. And yes, I'm sure there are things that are released for Android before they are for other platforms. Not the point. My point is that release times for all things should be closer together. What I get on my Evernote for Mac would be great if I could have a reasonable expectation that I can find it on my Evernote for Android in a short amount of time. I am indeed curious how the different platforms departments communicate. Being selfish, it would be nice if the parity were closer in releases across all platforms.

What we don't want to do is hold one or more completed platforms back until everyone (or at least most of the others) catch up. So we end up releasing as soon as we have something on a platform. By having the teams independent and decoupled, we're able to move much more quickly across all platforms. Trying to have a shared codebase or trying to time releases often ends up slowing things down monumentally, especially once you're on over 3 or 4 platforms.

I have to admit that I was a bit surprised to find that Evernote doesn't have a highlighter feature for highlighting text. Although it is an awesome product already, a highlighter feature would be helpful.

+4...this seems to be the most obvious of features missing from Evernote. Be interested to learn what we have to do as a community to get this added...I first requested this feature add in August of 2008...it's March 2012..! Just let us know how to get it to the top of the development list???

+1 What I find interesting is that they have it in the iOS version for the iPad but not in the Mac OSx version. So clearly they understand the value. This is one of the major reasons I don't use Evernote for note taking. (BTW, I do use the iPad version for minor note taking but not the Mac version.)

Thanks for the response dlu. I work for a global healthcare software development and information company, and I had to vent. We work on a lot of platforms and I have the same frustration on the home front too. I realize its better to keep things releasing to the public whenever you have that chance too, rather than wait for the slowest cog to catch up. I have to keep reminding myself I don't live in a perfect world. :)

What you may not understand is that the Evernote teams are independent, have their own timeframes and priorities, as best we on the outside can tell. I think that highlighting will makes its way into the other products eventually -- they do have a stated desire for feature parity.across clients, as much as possible...

Love Evernote and use it constantly.

Just started grad school, and now need to be able to highlight within notes. Any update on when this might be available? Perhaps in the new beta version, I hope?

And if not, how do we users get this to the top of the list for the next update? I've looked through the forums, and it seems like lots of peeps want this feature!

Thanks!

What we don't understand is why this simple feature has not been implemented in EN Mac even though it was requested years ago.

It is nice to have highlighting in EN iPad, by EN Mac is used far more for creating, editing, and annotating notes than EN iPad.

Great to know. Thanks, Dave!

Hope it's easy for ya. :)

Think of all the recycling you're going to divert! Now we won't need to print the pages to highlight with those trusty 3M highlighting devices... you're saving paper AND plastic!

Evernote does not typically pre-announce feature availablity, or even whether a feature will ever be available.

And if not, how do we users get this to the top of the list for the next update? I've looked through the forums, and it seems like lots of peeps want this feature!

I'm sure that if you gave them a couple of million bucks, that might help. But if you've looked through the forums, you may have noticed that Evernote usually set its own priorities.

If Team iPad says, "as of last night, we rolled out the ability to highlight notes." Then Team MacOS and Team Android need to take note and acknowledge, "Hey, we need to bump that up on our list" for the sake of parity. It seems a logical concept to build bridges across development teams and work as a united company. Right now it seems as if they are in very strict silos, and don't communicate with each other.

A simple example: If the truck division of GM puts an XYX-Type navigation system in their vehicles, then Chevy would follow suit and use the same system, not develop GHI-Type to put into their car division. Shared resources, intelligence and research goes a long way and saves duplicate efforts. Just saying.
