(Archived) REQUEST: Cross-client parity in tag name auto-filling

(Disclaimer: Sorry if this has been requested before on the forums. I didn't know which keywords to search, and I didn't see anything requesting exactly this.)

In the Mac client, when adding tags to a note in the tag field, tag names are auto-filled only from the beginning of the names. That is, if I have tags in my account called "Name 1," NameOfThisTagIsOneWord," and "Tag Name Three," when I start by typing "nam" into the tag field, the drop-down menu gives me the options of "Name 1" and "NameOfThisTagIsOneWord," but not "Tag Name Three"

In the Chrome clipper, tag names are auto-filled from any part of the names. That is, with the example of the three tags above, when I start by typing "th," the clipper suggests "NameOfThisTagIsOneWord" and "Tag Name Three," even though "th" does not start either tag and appears in the middle of a word in one.

In the web client, tag names are auto-filled only from the beginning of any words they contain. In the same example of those three tags, searching "th" only pulls up "Tag Name Three," since "th" begins one of the words contained in the tag.

I don't know how other clients do this, but I find it difficult that the three clients I use have three different ways to auto-fill tag names. If these could be made the same across clients, regardless of which auto-fill pattern they use, that would be helpful for me (and, I imagine though I won't speak for, other users who regularly use different clients).

Consistency is not Evernote's strong suit.

I don't know, but they seem to allow (encourage?) each client development team to operate very independently, with very little guidance or oversight to ensure consistency of UI, architecture, and features. This is how it appears to me, from my very tiny knothole. ;)

IAC, the clients do end up with a significant amount if inconsistency and lack of parity.

I agree with Peter's statement "If these could be made the same across clients, regardless of which auto-fill pattern they use, that would be helpful for me (and, I imagine though I won't speak for, other users who regularly use different clients)."

I often use many different EN clients, including EN Mac, EN Win, EN iPhone, and EN iPad.

I have noticed a number of users who post in the EN User Group that mention they use both EN Mac and EN Win, one at work, and the other at home.

I know there will be a few differences due to / constrained by the platform. But I think to a large degree they can be made consistent, particularly EN Mac and EN Win.

I'm using the Evernote Web Clipper 5.3.2 for Chrome on an iMac running OSX 10.7.3. When I enter items directly into the Mac Evernote app, I can enter a series of tags by typing their first few letters until I get a match to an existing tag, then pressing the Return key to select a tag, then typing the first few letters of the next tag, etc.

However, when I enter an item from Chrome using the Evernote Web Clipper, if I enter the first few letters of a tag, the selection possibilities show up underneath my typing, but when I press the Return key it creates a new tag using only those letters instead of selecting the existing tag.

For example, let's say I had an existing tag called "photography". In the Evernote app, I could enter "photo" and then Return and Evernote would record "Photography." In Clipper, if I did the same thing it would record "photo."

It would really help the user experience if the Clipper app behaved the same way as the Evernote app. The way things are I'm constantly creating new Tags by accident.

Thanks.

Harwell, I've merged your post onto this existing one, since (a) your request is about more than one client (so it belongs here instead of in the Mac forum) and (b ) I think you're requesting the same thing as JMichael and me above, even if the details have changed a bit in the last month, with the new Chrome clipper. Is this a fair place for your request?

Needless to say, I second what you wrote, because I have the same problem.

Yes, I'm in agreement with merging it. I tried in vain for a long time to find similar requests before I posted, but obviously my search wasn't thorough enough. Thank you.
