thank you for the answer!

both tools fixed some garbage in winxp, not quite related to evernote (and both find fresh garbage every 5 minutes ).

and neither of them cured the problem.

the message from Evernote_4.5.7.7146.exe still reads:

OK - glad we cleared something up, even if it's not the problem you're concerned with..

Does your version of Windows have any other users set up?

From your desktop right-click on My Computer, then

~Manage (which should open the Computer Management Window)

Click the "+" by Local Users and Groups or double-click it.

(If you can't access this it's likely you do not have admin rights to the computer)

If there is another account, do you have any way to start the machine with that ID? If so and you can uninstall Evernote from there, all may be resolved.

If there's no other account, or you can't get into it, you need to log a support request - see my sig.

lusrmgr.msc shows no users. "Computer is under management of XP Home Edition, so this applet won't work"

usrmgr.msc is absent on my computer (afair it is present on XP ≥ Professional)

compmgmt.msc (that you specified) has nothing related to users.

this is oem win xp home edition on my personal (not office) laptop.

and i am the only admin of this computer (i know, it's lame to be logged in under administrative account everyday, but... you know)

the only thing works here is nusrmgr.cpl that lists two users: me and guest (never logged in with guest in my life).

Hi,

Week before I last I tried to upgrade to the latest EN. At the same time an automatic Windows 7 upgrade did not complete. Something with

the Microsoft .Net Framework. When trying to install EN EN 4.5.7.7146 by hand I got several error messages saying that EN is already installed; the

update aborted.

Eventually I deleted all Evernote files on my hard disk and using CCleaner I deleted all EN related registry entries.

As far as I can tell all files and all registry entries are gone from my system. However, see the latest Evernotesetup.log at the end of this post.

Something is still there telling the installing programme that there is an old EN installation.

The EN support team in Germany has been NO HELP AT ALL which is something all costumer support teams in Germany do.

I would hat to re-install Windows as I have all kinds of licensed software installed. Anyone any ideas?

Thanks for your help. Reading those log files thoroughly does indeed help.

I deleted the key in question; still no success.

It looks like EN is missing something in the registry now. Since I am registered user the installation routine does expect some traces

of a previous installation, I guess

PS You did export/backup the key before deleting it??

Sorry for being so short. I am using Evernote for keeping my daily diary and WinXDVD for copying my DVDs. Both application are Windows only. Otherwise I'm using openSUSE Linux. If it wasn't for those two applications I wouldn't go near Windows. So backing up the registry means googling for "How to back-up the Windows 7 registry", reading the instructions and so on. A pain .....

Found this in my Evernote notes. The URL I have for the note is out of date, but the details should still be correct.

Because nobody want's to help I help myself. For our problem solution is in EvernoteSetup.log file. In mine I found following line:
Located product {0ED78DCC-01A9-11E1-B2F1-1CC1DEF07CBE} with upgrade code {AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}.
Open regedit and search first 8 digits in reverse of the GUID for me it was E190C2EA.
I found 2 keys in registry in HKCR\Installer\UpgradeCodes andHKLU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Folders exported them (for safety) and then delete. After this I've started Evernote instalation again and it worked.

Hi,

After a bumpy Win7 upgrade and an unsuccessful attempt to install the latest EN version I have deleted ALL Evernote files and as far as I can tell

all EN registry entries. However, right after invoking the installation programme the installer produces this message (see below). It says that EN got installed by another

user and that only one installation is allowed per user.

I have repeatedly asked the German support staff to ask the EN developers which condition triggers this error message AFTER having done all of the above.

However, the gentlemen in question unflinchingly keep recommending to un-install Evernote. Before resorting to idiomatic language (in German) I wonder whether someone out there

has any idea what (a file, a registry entry) could trigger this error message.

Hi Wern, I am having the same problem and I have opened THREE tickets with the German EN Support and they keep insisting on recommending to un-install EN with Revo

and to re-install EN which does not work. Registry keys are obviously not up their street and my request to check with the EN developers has been ignored so far.

I also have problems installing Evernote on my new PC.

Its running a windows 7 home 64-bit and I have had Evernote installed before, I think...

At least I have an earlier install-file in my Chrome-download folder.

But now I cant find a trace of Evernot in my program folder or on desktop etc.

Tried to download the latest and only get the annoying message that the administrator already have installed it yada yada yada.

Hi, I am a Premium member trying to update to EN v. 4.5.8 Public (Build 267864) on my PC (Windows XP). I've tried about three times, and the same series of error messages occurs each time. The file downloads and goes through all the usual steps preparing to install, then balks:

1) "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Evernote.msi' in the box below."

I search for the file, find it, re-enter the path, and click OK. Note: I am not on a large network. There is only one other computer networked to mine, and it is usually off, so it's highly unlikely the file could have gone there.

2) "The file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Evernote.msi is not a valid installation package for the product Evernote 4.5.7. Try to find the installation package 'Evernote.msi' in a folder from which you can install Evernote v. 4.5.7."

Note that the error message thinks I am trying to install 4.5.7. I have EV 4.5.8 (Build 267728). I click OK.

3) "The older version of Evernote 4.5.8 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."

I click OK. No other choice.

4) "Setup error (.\Bootstrapper.cpp:886) 0x643:Fatal error during installation."

Can someone help me? Am I doing something wrong? Should I just wait for the next version to come out?

Had the same problem some time back and this worked for me, but yours might be something much different.

I synced my current version of EN.

Shut down the computer, and restarted, NOT just a reboot.

Once EN was up and running I clicked on Help and clicked on "Check for updates" when it found the new update, said yes to download and let it do its thing.

All went well for me, hope this might solve your problem.

Had the same problem some time back and this worked for me, but yours might be something much different.
I synced my current version of EN.
Shut down the computer, and restarted, NOT just a reboot.
Once EN was up and running I clicked on Help and clicked on "Check for updates" when it found the new update, said yes to download and let it do its thing.
All went well for me, hope this might solve your problem.

I had the same problem with an error similar to [ "Setup error" "(.\Bootstrapper.cpp]

I had specified my "Temp" variable to be on a drive which was removed.

Changing the temp variable to a drive which exists solved this problem for me.

When I update my evernote last week, I force removed the old one firstly and setup the new version. But it says "Evernote was already installed by another user. Only one per-user installation is supported.

An administrator can install Evernote for everyone after the per-user installation is removed."

I am the administrator group user. I deleted the evernote folders. deleted all the register items searching by the keyword"evernote". I also try to use the following software "windows installer clean up","cclear"etc. but it not works.

Anyone can help me.

There are probably a few EN leftover files and/or registry items on your computer. I recommend you use REVO uninstaller to force a clean un-install. Go to Evernote.com, sign in and see if all your notes are there (WEB version).

Then install a new EN client, sign in with your username and password and sync.

By the way: I'd do a regular backup of your username.exb file (this is where all your notes are stored).

I have tried the REVO uninstaller. but there is no evernote show in the Revo now. maybe because I have done the force uninstall,but I don't know where it is clean (I deleted the evernote folder and deleted all the register items searching by the keyword"evernote")

All the data in my account is safe now. I can use them in evernote web. I just do not reinstall evernote now.

Open regedit and search first 8 digits in reverse of the GUID for me it was E190C2EA.

Thanks Michal, this was exactly what I needed and worked perfectly. The upgrade code GUID was identical to the one you provided. I found 2 registry keys, deleted them and then was able to install the latest version of Evernote.

I found a solution for this issue. Find the installation package for the version which is now installed on your computer. Install it again and then uninstall it.

THese are the messages in the EvernoteSetup log before and after deleting some items from the registry. I am having the same kind of problem as the one outlined in this topic: one per user installation is supported, but I uninstalled Evernote from my PC in December, used REVO to delete all related files and looked into the registry to find the files that might have stopped the new installation. I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Evernote. Evernote should put older installers online so we can resolve these types of issues.

i had this problem today when starting Evernote, there was a dialog box saying I need to find the evernote.msi file.

I solved the problem by downloading the new version http://evernote.com/evernote/ and by installing it again. After that, Evernote opened as usual, with all my notes still there

I have a Windows installation with no visible means of uninstall. Not listed in the Control Panel. No Start menu items. The program folder doesn't have any obvious uninstall program.

I have 4.5.1 public 194665 on Windows 7 which I can't automatically upgrade because it reports it is a single user installation and there can only be one. I assume it must have been installed under a different user from the one I currently run as.

I guess I'll probably have to delve into the registry to clean it out and start again. If so, what needs to go?

I just google and found some helpful stuff. Share with someone who probably having same issues here:

1, Open the EvernoteSetup.log

This file locates here in my computer and it updates when you run the setup every time.

C:\Users\Frank\AppData\Local\Temp\EvernoteSetup.log

2, Find the key

Find this line: Located product {4C8BBCC8-8363-11E2-A3F4-984BE15F174E} with upgrade code {AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}.

And reverse the first 8 chars, for example mine is 4C8BBCC8, reversed to be 8CCBB8C4

3, Find it in regs

Run "Regedit", and find 8CCBB8C4

For example you will find it here: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Installer>UpgradeCodes 8CCBB8C4F5FC03E468956D042EA3B899″

Delete it

To be safe, export before you do that

4, you should be able to install it now.

You don't lose your notes when you uninstall?
No.

If you have any unsynced notes (including local/non-synced notebooks), you'll need to backup your exb file first. Otherwise, you WILL lose those notes. There are instructions in several places on the board on how to do this. Please use the search function, if you need more info.

Backing up is a good idea, but Uninstall doesn't delete the database as far as I know, right? At least the Evernote uninstall; I don't know about REVO's uninstall.

Finally I've solved the problem.

Issue is coming from I couldn't installed Evernote for a while and after some Googleing, decided to try delete Evernote records from Regedit. Tried, deleted every key including Evernote. But this can not solve the problem.

1) Try to install Evernote again and get the error "evernote was already installed by another user..... per-user bla bla"

2) See the log C:\Users\_windows_user_name\AppData\Local\Temp\EvernoteSetup.log

3) Check the log

[03/31/2013 18:36:47] Located product {4C8BBCC8-8363-11E2-A3F4-984BE15F174E} with upgrade code {AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}.

4) Then searched Regedit again with: "4C8BBCC8", find the keys and deleted. One of those keys is including upgrade code and this handles the upgrading. Evernote has reversed upgrade code: AE2C091E => E190C2EA

5) Solved

The default mode (moderate) of Revo free uninstaller includes "scanning for leftover files, folders & registry items". And Wern's suggestion above was to use Revo.

Personally, I would never recommend anyone doing an uninstall of any software without backing up first. Unless, of course they really want to permanently uninstall it & don't care about any existing data. It's one thing if you're doing it yourself. But I think it's best to err on the side of caution when dealing with other users, especially if you don't know their level of skill. IE, a generic "no you won't lose your data if you uninstall" is not the same as "no you won't lose your data if you use the Evernote uninstaller or don't have Revo delete the leftover files & folders".

I can't see all the items or even the top part of the tree. This is definitely "do at your own risk". But for me, I normally review the suggestions by Revo, confirm they all seem related to Evernote (or whatever app I'm deleting) and then check all the suggestions & delete all the items Revo suggested.

Managed to fix it, had to hunt down the registry entry pointing towards the install location

I am totally annoied with this, trying to reinstall EvNo for hours now, but so far with no success!

I tried to follow the following steps, there is nothing in the registry with key like: "E190C2EA" but still the supper intelligent installer somehow detect a installed version! From where? Any Ideas on what should i do now?

I was trying to install this on linux wine and yes I try Revo but it did not find anything. I end up deleting the whole .wine directory to reinstall the application.

I had problems when i tried to install evernote to my pc. It said "Evernote was already installed by another user. Only one per user installation is supported. An administrator can install EN after the per user installation is removed.".

I located: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\EvernoteSetup.log and found this line:

Product {D9FE1AFC-8C6D-484F-B3FD-E50780153234} install location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Bamboo Dock\Apps\Evernote\.

After i uninstalled Bamboodock i could install Evernote!

Hope that i can help someone with this information

I just google and found some helpful stuff. Share with someone who probably having same issues here:

1, Open the EvernoteSetup.log
This file locates here in my computer and it updates when you run the setup every time.
C:\Users\Frank\AppData\Local\Temp\EvernoteSetup.log

2, Find the key
Find this line: Located product {4C8BBCC8-8363-11E2-A3F4-984BE15F174E} with upgrade code {AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}.
And reverse the first 8 chars, for example mine is 4C8BBCC8, reversed to be 8CCBB8C4

3, Find it in regs
Run "Regedit", and find 8CCBB8C4
For example you will find it here: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Installer>UpgradeCodes 8CCBB8C4F5FC03E468956D042EA3B899″
Delete it
To be safe, export before you do that

4, you should be able to install it now.

My question is: after I del one stander user and created another one, different name, same limited user. and from the evernote setup log, it says

Product GUID {UUSGW90B-90E2-11E2-B700-984BE15F174E} install location is C:\Users\1st (i del 1st)

now i just want to install evernote to my 2nd user which is current standard user, no more 1st user del by admin

how can i reinstall sucessfully for 2nd user then?

Same worked for me.

Beware that in Windows 7, the default search for evernote.msi is unsuccessful because it resides in a temp folder. press the windows (start) button), type %TEMP% in the command box. In the folder that opens I found Evernote.msi and ran it.

For completeness: I also did the regedit stuff before. Don't know now if this is a prerequisite.

It was ages ago that I still needed the regedit and the command box. Also browsing in temp folders, can't remember when I last had to do it.

Thanks Evernote for the nostalgic feeling ;-)

This is such a major bug. The update pushed through the pop-up window in the EN client broke the thing, and downloading the client from the website doesn't fix it either.

What if you were counting on this for a major meeting with a client? This is a disaster for the Evernote company. First the password security issue and now...

Why hasn't the downloadable .exe on evernote.com's frontpage been fixed yet? Why do I need to muck about with the registry or whatever? I have an actual job to do!

Same here! It worked perfectly, thanks! Only, now that I reinstalled it, I cannot see the proper EN icon on my desktop, just a generic white ".exe" icon. Does anyone know how I can fix it? Of course, that's a minor problem if compared to not being able to use EN on my laptop anymore...

Apparently, Evernote is adapting a strategy to torture its costomers. I used Evernote.msi to solve the update problem, but couldn't find Evernote.msi anymore and contacted the constomer severces and got the following message:

If you do have any Local Only notebooks or unsynced notes, right-click the notebook name in the left-hand notebook pane and select "Export", then export the notebook to .enex format, exporting tags if desired. If you have some unsynchronized notes, you can go to the Note List view, sort by the "Sync" column, and export any notes that have a * in that column to .enex format before following the above instructions. Once those instructions are finished, you can then import the .enex files you created to restore these exported notes.

Go to File > Sign Out
Go to Evernote > Options
Click on "Open Database folder"
Copy the file with your username (ending in "exb") to a different location. For example, move it to your computer's desktop.
Then:
Please download and install the free version of "Revo Uninstaller" from the following link:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/start_freeware_download.html

Once Revo is installed use it to remove all traces of Evernote from your system (Run it in Advanced mode, and delete every item that is found for Evernote) and then Reboot your computer.

Download and install this pre-release version of the Windows client:

Install with Internet Explorer and Outlook (if present) closed, selecting "Install for You" and not "Install for Everyone" during the installation process.

I replied: Thanks but I already uninstalled the old Evernote so the Revo Uninstaller cannot find Evernote in the list.

Then no response from Evernote.

So I spent several hours to delete the evernote folder, evernote in the registry and anything related to Evernote, nothing working

Finally, looked at the install log:

The line in red is the key. Reverse this AE2C091E to E190C2EA. Search the "E190C2EA" in the registry and deleted it. Install Evernote again and succeeded.

I tried all of the options mention. above. Registry tricks and Revo didn't solve the problem. I finally opted to extend my subscription to

"Advance System Optimizer" ($39).

It took about an hour or more while the optimizer downloaded and installed drivers and worked on the register and files,

I then clicked on my Evernote 5.3.1 executable. Perfect, well worth the $39. I must have spent 8 hours on this problem.

I signed into Evernote and all my notes were synched from my phone.

All is well. I hope this saves someone else the problems I had.

I must add:

My case was in Win XP and that also I run Revo Unistaller Delete letfover files first.

Now working happy with Evernote again!

I had problems when i tried to install evernote to my pc. It said "Evernote was already installed by another user. Only one per user installation is supported. An administrator can install EN after the per user installation is removed.".

I located: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\EvernoteSetup.log and found this line:

Product {D9FE1AFC-8C6D-484F-B3FD-E50780153234} install location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Bamboo Dock\Apps\Evernote\.

After i uninstalled Bamboodock i could install Evernote!

Hi all!

I had the same situation. It was not possible to uninstall Evernote from my PC.

I created another user, and installed the new version in that account.

It worked fine. The problem was the next update. It was not possible to install it in the new user, and of course it was not possible to uninstall the version from my PC again.

My new solution was radical. I forget the uninstall procedure. I deleted all the files, and after that I used Regedit to find every reference to Evernote.

I removed one by one, looking to eliminate all of them.

I found the reference to the version 5.2 in my registry. Evernote was saying that this version was blocking the installation of the new one. But my version that time was 5.3. I did not understand how it was refering a 5.2 version.

After remove all the references to Evernote from registry, I installed the 5.4 version with no problems.

I don't know exactly what's happening. It looks the uninstall procedure is not really uninstalling all the stuff of Evernote.
