With the transition of Evernote 3 to be Web-centric and multi-platform, as opposed to Evernote 2 which was pure Windows, supporting links to local files presented implementation challenges that dictated removal of the feature. We are however looking at ways it might be supported in future releases.

More specifically on your comments:

I am able to copy and paste from Word, Excel but NO link will be kept.

I am able to copy and paste from PDF no link kept

> In these cases, Evernote 3 is the same as Evernote 2; only the contents of the clipboard are pasted into the note.

I am unable to copya and paste from Powerpoint

> There should be no problem copying and pasting from Powerpoint. I just tried it and it works fine - assuming of course that there is content on the clipboard.

I can drag and drop a PDF file, icon and title will show, i can click and open (no link shows)

> In this case, Evernote 3 supports PDF as an internal data type in the Evernote database and simply opens Acrobat when you click on the icon/file name in the note, so a link to the file is not needed.

I can drag and drop a .jpg, image will show, no link

> This case are covered by my introductory paragraph above.

The only links that are kep are from web clippings.

Dear Dnagy,

Thanks for your quick answer.

I simply cannot believe what I am reading when you say:

With the transition of Evernote 3 to be Web-centric and multi-platform, as opposed to Evernote 2 which was pure Windows, supporting links to local files presented implementation challenges that dictated removal of the feature.

adding after "We are however looking at ways it might be supported in future releases."

and

Web links are supported in Evernote 3 because it can be implemented in a simple and robust way given our Web-centric, multi-platform environment.

This is the announcment of what we were afraid of: the loss of Evernote 2.2.1 and its features. Or, the creation of a completely new program called Evernote 3.

The best idea (I don't know if Phil could read this), the MAIN GENIALITY of Evernote was to be a Web clipper (perhaps the best), a Notetaker (easy as none, and with Templates!!!), a desktop clipper (pieces of our documents we could add, modify, comment, criticize etc.), an screen clipper (yes, also a great tool). And all that in the simpliest GUI ever!!! With an extraordinary new concept of organizing (tags, multi tags, automatic tagging, keyword tagging) and searching (reducing by selection of whole branch of tags, category intersection and/or selected tags plus search words (nearly a complete boolean search).

IT IS GENIALITY AND CREATIVITY AT ITS BEST.

How can you drop that incredible step ahead for all info keepers, gatherers, writers?

By itself, the idea of true hierarchical tag tree was a giant move towards a best memory (I am saying best (or better)) as we could use our own way of categorizing (tagging) our ideas and relate them as WE (each of us differently) do, and be freed of the imposition of the fixed folder-like not multi-selectionnable rigid oak tree.

Is this the idea of your CEO when he says "never forget again"? It is wrong.... we forget words (or how they are spelled or if they are in the document), but we remember what it was about...wine, beverage, alcohol, steak, tax exempt, trip, Asia, Cult, To-do, Friend, Personal, Work, Book...

We simply forget WORDS!!!! (Remember What, when, where, how, why (Kipling) and the fact that you can pick any of these and transform them in some category (tag)).

We need hierarchy (all my wines, all my white wines, all my Cabernets (if it is Phil's kind of interest), and from where did they came, and where did I drank them, and what year are they, and are they fruity, almond-like, round or sharp. Do I have an occasion that it does remember me of?, its range of price, the guy I bought it from,....... this come in tags!!! (Don't even think of folder tree....!!)

And on top of that, Marcclarke is right in his post to you when he says:

Dnagy,

I respectfully submit that this is the wrong course for Evernote Corp. to pursue. We EN 2.2 users are your proven, enthusiastic supporters and paying customers. EN 3 Beta, as interesting and promising as it is, isn't even close to being a replacement for EN 2.2 yet, let alone an upgrade from EN 2.2.

Please don't reward our enthusiasm, loyalty, and support by abandoning us.

If you abandon your long-term EverNote 2 customers when you go to Evernote 3, potential Evernote 3 customers can be confident that you will again abandon your Evernote 3 customers when you go to Evernote 4, and so on. So why would anyone bother investing their money, time, enthusiasm, loyalty, or support into Evernote 3, given your demonstrated track record of abandoning and alienating your long-time EN 2 customers?

I respectfully urge you to rethink and reconsider this decision.

I too urge you to stop a few days, brainstorm, read 2.2.1 forums, look at competition (none as good as 2.2.1 for the moment).

Don't forget that we, users (power users) have searched the entire web for years and selected extremely carefully the system called Evernote 2.2.1

We all have (had) other systems but not fulfilling our real needs.... you did! As-is, 2.2.1 is simply the best.

You have the best, in a few months it will be too late for you, competition will know what to do, they look at you everyday as you do look at them.

If you can imagine the amount of money you think you'll make with Beta 3 (when stable), you can multiply that by ten if you bring the power of 2.2.1

But on the long run, if you go on with this simplistic version 3 as is, people will turn away slowly and search again...Money will be gone.

I don' t know how to persuade you to make a 180º turn. Perhaps by saying that too much simplicity is wrong...that is the version 3 problem. And the graceful balance of 2.2.1

This is not a critique, it is the best suggestion I can think of, and we are saying that, and repeating that, since the day Beta 3 was out. Please listen and think about it.

Best regards

Tom
