(Archived) how do you reference to other notes inside a note, if you do

Recommended Posts

hi all EN users,

i'm curious about how other people do the job.

the first days i used EN, i came to some points, where i had more than 1 note concerning a special subject.

as all those notes to that subject were indivitual how-to's, i didnt want to merge them all together, so i ponderd, how to reference to another note inside a note. (simplest idea was: drag a note into another and create a link, which takes me, if clicked, to that linked note.)

i did not came to a conclusion (also because EN did not offer any useful tools/features for this matter for me at this time), so i dropped to be concerned about cross-referencing and lived my life happily ever after.

until now.

are *you* refer to other notes?

if, how?

if not, why?

(i assume, tagging a note is some kind of referencing and i use tagging a lot, but with a lot of tags, sometimes a note isnt covered with all the applicable tags available in the taglist (too much tags to remember, forgot a special tag, overseen a tag, etc...))

cheers,

Here are a couple versions involving an unique code inserted into the notebooks that need to be referenced.

This technique is more powerful than a simple link, because it allows you to link several notes together - example: the notes involved in buying a car: research notes, dealer info, car specs, negotiation, financing, purchase details.

As discussed in the other thread, I don't do note linking at this time, and probably won't until they're supported natively.

If I were to need this, I would use GUIDs, probably generated via the Microsoft developer tool, GuidGen.exe, e.g. : {77FB8881-6CBD-403e-920B-BDB3F2A14447}. As unique as they need to be for a single person, you can find them as-is by wrapping them in quotes in the search string, and you could also fabricate series by modifying the last 'n' hexadecimal digits of a base GUID, which will still likely be unique enough.

If you are looking for the ultimate perfect password, check out this site which generates an unique set of custom, high quality, cryptographic-strength password strings.

Yes, this is overkill, but if you like security stuff, Steve Gibson adds an interesting explanation on how they are created. Just scroll down.

both of these links now go to the home pae of the forum. Very disappointing as I wanted to see how to do that.

Yeah, I know.

Evernote decided that the older information would confuse the users. So when they upgraded the forum software, they shut down the older messages.

Kind of frustrating. There were a lot of gems in those older posts.
