Default template for new note

Being able to specific a template as the default that populates new notes would be incredibly helpful.  90% of my notes use one template and eliminating the apply template would be great.  I'd imagine that many users have a similar/simple setup.  I've seen lots of people talking about copy/paste existing note, but that seems kludgy, given the existence of templates.

Alternatively (but more complicated) would be the ability to create new notes from a template type/button - where you could favorite the template(s) you use.

To advance on this You should be able to have new notes created in each notebook have a default template, for example I want to set the default template for my recipes notebook to my recipe template. My weekly review notebook needs the weekly review template.

Easy solutions to default templates - create template note(s) and

  1. save in a Template (or any other) notebook - pin to the top of a notebbook if you wish.  Then use 'Copy to' or 'Duplicate' as required.
  2. export single note to ENEX and save the ENEX file back into that note.  Open the ENEX file to 'import' a new copy of that note.

Beware that different methods affect created/ updated dates,  tags and titles - pick whichever works for you.

I agree this could be useful. How many different templates would you need? The fact that you can now add your own templates as "buttons" in a new note means it is very easy to immediately create a new note in the correct style. Provided you don't have lots of different templates this works well.

I know I've seen mention of this,  but I've never tried to do it before - and now that I'm looking,  I can't see how.  There's nothing in Settings,  and nothing in the new note or template dialogues that suggests I can add a button.  I'm on 10.135.4 (in Win 11 desktop) which seems to be the latest version...  What am I missing please??

From the "My templates" button on a new note you can use the pin icon to "pin" a template to a new note
