Nobody needs AI or a new function for this.

On many devices you can use the build in ability of the OS to dictate text into a note.

The opposite text to speech function you find in the accessibility settings.

"text-to-speech"   ... not speech to text... which would seem a quite important feature for a capture tool, which has been in other text apps such as TextEdit (Mac) since 2005.

"Text-to-speech capabilities have been available on Mac computers since at least macOS 10.4 Tiger, released in 2005, through the Speech system preferences."

On many devices you can use the build in ability of the OS to dictate text into a note.”

Yes, but not the second most popular OS. For decades text editors can use the Mac OS text to speech feature… but not Evernote. Yes, on iOS, not MacOS.

You let me dictate into Evernote, but not have it proofread back?

And now you’re implementing very nice AI features to vastly improve what I wrote except … yet anyone who wants to actually hear it read must take it to another app?

Am I being selfish?

There are 3 options I can tell:

The first 2 are in MacOS settings, accessibility:

- Something like "Live-.Speech" in the "Speech" settings.

- The alternative is in the Mac's accessibility settings: Choose "Speak text unter the mouse pointer", and it will do exactly this. The downside: It will do it all the time, until you call settings again to make it shut up.

- The independent solution: Get yourself PopClip - it's a menu bar helper, that you can use for a ton of useful little functions. It always works the same: You select a text in any app, and hover the mouse over it. The PopClip menu appears, and lets you choose an options for the selected text.

There is an extension called "SAY". It does exactly this: It converts the selected text into speech, and uses the Macs speakers to serve it.

I prefer PopClip SAY.

They never seem to implement any platform specific abilities directly into the clients. No support for pencils on iOS or Android. None of the OS capabilities from Window or Mac.

They are often similar in result, but use different frameworks and SDKs to get the job done. This would break the code sharing between clients. In the long run this becomes costly by adding complexity.

Just my 5ct (nothing official)
