REQUEST: IMPROVING WINDOW MANAGEMENT OR EVERNOTE AND WINDOW MANAGEMENT ON THE MAC: A NIGHTMARE!

Rafael B

Idea

Can you imagine that web browsers didn't have tabs at the beginning? I remember it well. Navigation was quite limited until that feature was introduced. In the same way, Evernote needs to improve its window and tab management.

Currently, when we create a new note or click on a link within Evernote, the entire app interface switches to that new note. This is highly disruptive and breaks our concentration, making it harder to work efficiently.

My suggestion: Make it so Evernote, by default, opens new notes and note links in a new window or tab, similar to how web browsers do. This would provide a much smoother and more efficient user experience, helping us maintain focus and productivity.

Specifically for macOS: I'd like it if, when clicking on the Evernote icon, we could see all open Evernote windows, just like on Windows. Simply hovering over the icon should automatically show all instances of the app to make navigation easier. Currently, for those who like to minimize windows to the app icon, whenever we click in Evernote on dock do mac, the whole window pops up to the front, causing us to lose track of our task.

So, do you also suffer from this on macos? Leave your report below!

Evernote needs to improve its window and tab management

This request is as old as version 10 is.  You might consider checking the forums before starting a new thread.  In Legacy, the Mac had this feature, but not Windows so it wasn't surprising to see that it wasn't initially implemented, but I agree that adding a tabbed window feature back in would be helpful and welcomed by many.

It is unknown how much attention Evernote gives the forums since these are primarily for users.  Sending your thoughts to feedback@evernote.com may at least help ensure it gets read by them.

The Windows example you show is an operating system feature and nothing to do with Evernote. It happens like this for all apps.

In November of last year, I came up with about 17 suggestions and posted them in this forum, aiming to stimulate activity and fresh ideas. Out of my suggestions, four were at least partially implemented:

If you want to think it was your post that did it, ok ... could be, who knows, but others had requested the first three you listed previously and those are also features in competing apps.  Concerning AI, they are known for that technology in their other apps so it was no surprise that was one of the first features they added in.  They have had a couple of iterations of AI.  The first was, IMO, not very useful, but their latest implementation shows some promise.

It is indeed a native Windows feature, but it is not impossible to implement it as a feature in Evernote. What cannot be denied is that the window management in macOS needs improvement.

I suppose you could have a chat with Apple and see if they'd implement what Microsoft has done.

Regarding tabs, I remember a call with the old team where they said tabs on Macs wasn't used by many folk which is probably why they didn't build into V10 and all the Windows folk never had the feature anyway.

I get on fine myself with window management but others may have different needs.

There is almost nothing original about the resources I suggested. What I consider relevant are the arguments in favor of their implementation. This part, without a doubt, is quite original. I like to think that the ideas are there for everyone to see; but the arguments are not.

To be honest, like you, I much prefer dealing with windows. What bothers me the most is the current management of them. It's horrible! Tabs are, in my opinion, just an additional feature, very simple to implement due to Evernote's current Chromium base.

I want to be able to click to create a new note and open a window. I want to click on a link and open it in a new window. What a dream that would be!!!

I'm not seeing anything new in the arguments.  As I mentioned, this is an old request and the utility is quite clear.  If there is anything new to be added, adding it to an existing thread would be best.

Improve window management on the Mac is a running gag, isn't it ?

Get a window manager (I use Magnet, but there are Free alternatives as well) if you don't like the native way how the Mac handles windows. This is no EN issue.

I see this more as a request than an issue.  I also use Magnet when needed but would find an open in new tab option a slightly more useful feature, but not a must have especially if tabs in the past were as little used as @Jon/t mentions above.

And how exactly is Magnet going to make it so that creating a new note in Evernote opens in a new window? Oh wait, it can't. My suggestion was specifically for Evernote, not for macOS window management. By the way, Magnet is quite outdated. Swish is far superior, and I already use it.

Have you tried holding down the ⌘ key and double-clicking on the link?
