No longer possible to filter on upcoming reminders anymore

Recommended Posts

After update 10.87.0 in the android app it's not longer possible to filter on upcoming reminders.
I have hunders of notes and can't filter (of find) my to expire of the day's notes anymore.

I hope they wil fix the filter. Without the filter option is app is useless for me.

Same issue here. Used to be from the notes list you could view upcoming reminders. No longer. Really difficult to comprehend the decision making. Likewise burying shortcuts behind multiple taps, but at least that's not gone completely.

Four taps deep through the three dots menu you can filter by reminders, but even that doesn't appear to allow sorting by upcoming reminders.

Evernote, seriously, wtf? How are you expecting reminders to be used without being able to see which ones are current or upcoming? Why on Earth would you remove that?

Why don't you just set up a saved search (can be a shortcut) using the advanced search syntax to give you exactly what you want?

You can also use the reminders tab to sort reminders by reminder date.

The reminders tab is what they appear to have removed. If you're not seeing that, maybe it's an A/B test. I noticed my shortcuts link is in a different place than my wife's too, both on Android, so I assume there's some of that going on.

That's a good idea to work around it by shortcutting an advanced search though; I'll try that.

I've definitely still got a reminders tab on Android 10.90.0 but we know version numbers aren't completely reliable to know if somebody is getting the same experience.

Yeah, I'm on the same version, but definitely no reminders tab.

Using a saved search it appears I can get today's reminders, or reminders for a set number of upcoming days, though I can't sort by reminder date. Good enough I guess. Sure wish Evernote would quit removing useful features. Appreciate the help.

Exactly my situation! I need this reminder tab and I can't understand why EN removed it!

Very annoying!

PS: I'm on version 10.93

Sorting for reminders seems to be removed … this is a no go …  can’t believe this after tripling  annual fees to 79€.  if this is not put back to function asap I need to cancel this subscription. Already looking for an alternative…

Sorting is available on desktop and web.

For the mobile you can help with seeing due reminders by creating a saved search for reminders -3 and +3, to cover 7 days around the current date.

reminderTime:day-3 -reminderTime:day+3

On desktop there's a "save search" link at the top right when you run a search. When you click that, there's also an option to add it to shortcuts. They've made the shortcuts a bit more annoying to get to on mobile too, but they're at least somewhat accessible.

Not sure if there's a similar way to save a search on mobile, but if you save it on desktop it'll be there.

Once you have run the search if you open the three dots menu the first option is "Save search"

I'm afraid they banned the function. I've tried to reach out to them a couple of times by support as well as Twitter to ask. But complete silence, not a single word. My subscription is over €100 a year and they can't even sent a quick reply.🙄

Same issue here (on mobile/Android), and I've submitted a report...although there no longer seem to be any channels that guarantee actual follow-up (via a ticket system).

I'll post back here with any response I get. The workarounds discussed in this thread don't work for me, and the Reminder feature is probably the single most important feature for my purposes and productivity, after the note-taking feature itself.

Once you've created your custom search, the 3-dot menu gives you the option to give it a name and save it to your shortcuts. Apparently it still can't show you your reminders in chronological order, though, so there's no point setting the start and finish dates too wide apart, because you'll no longer have the overview over your tasks.

What happened is likely that somebody watched at the mobile GUI and saw that the REMINDERS function took an entire row of height (to make the tab between notes and reminders). Because they wanted it lean, they just took this display function out, without replacing it with any other solution. You know, that’s when the Product Owner tells he is embarrassed about the waste in the morning Daily, and in the coffee break the dev comes back and reports „fixed“.

And nobody asked „How did you do it so fast ?“.

IMHO a stupid move, but here we are.

10.94 doesn't seem to be out yet, for Android, but I imagine there wouldn't be any change there, either.

I don't know when the upgrade to 10.93 took place (the one that turned it into a chaos app instead of a productivity app), but for all I know, it hasn't been long enough for them to fix the issue—assuming they intend to fix it.

I've submitted several requests, but they've also made it difficult to get through to anyone, so I've made a note to submit a query via one of the "wrong" channels, so that they're obliged to open a ticket and get back to me. I'll do that around the middle of next week and will post in this thread with any news I get.

The latest Android version doesn't have it restored. It has some other features added, which I don't care about.

I'm going to finally have to start looking at alternatives, especially because nobody has even acknowledged my support request/complaint yet.

It's been over a week without functionality I use daily - with no explanation as to why it was even removed.

I've attempted to use the Task system, but that doesn't cover what I want. Think I'm paid up until September and if it's not back by way before then, I'll have migrated.

I consider using the Tasks function "damage limitation", rather than an actual solution—the "solution" being to simply restore what worked perfectly well and was used by so many, prior to the 10.93 update.

My habit of summarising several scheduled reminders (individual notes) into a single, easy-access Task note (and the fact that date-sorted reminders are still available on the desktop clients) is what saved me from losing the overview over my many scheduled and/or time-sensitive tasks.

Bearing in mind that Evernote markets itself—in the very first sentence in its Android app description—as a "notepad, planner & daily organizer to take notes", except they've literally removed the ability to organize one's daily notes.

There was a suggestion for a workaround, using various sort functions, but this is a laborious and multi-step process (in the Android app, at least)...and it still doesn't allow the user to simply and immediately call up all notes with reminders attached to them, in chronological/date order, as before. (You can filter for reminder notes within a given period, but they are displayed seemingly at random; if there's an additional way to sort them by date order, I haven't found it yet.)

It's been a week since I submitted this issue (but via the "you will not necessarily get a response" channels), so I'll be opening a ticket shortly and will share with the forum what comes back.

I'm still having to battle on a daily basis with this nonsense on my Android devices. I'm starting to miss certain reminders and finding myself only catching up once in front of a computer - which isn't sustainable for me.

Thankfully my subscription expires in a couple of months so it's a nice chunk of time to investigate alternative options.

The lack of response and explanation is just as disappointing as the fact they removed perfectly good functionality in the first place.

I managed to sneak my complaint to them by using one of the only remaining channels that will force them to open a ticket and get back to you, even if that channel wasn't strictly relevant to my complaint. This was just today, over lunch (CET). I'll post any response I get, but I see it did generate a ticket number, so I'm hopeful.

Evernote's response (I'm not copying the whole email, as it relates to the part about migrating notes from EN to Notion, which I would only do if the Reminder functionality isn't restored).

I'm usually not bad at reading between the lines, but all I see here is an acknowledgement of what's missing. I don't detect any suggestion that they are actually working to restore it.

Thanks for all that - I'd be interested to know if you get a response to the last part. What channel did you use to actually get a response?

As you say, it's all very cryptic and that doesn't tell me if it's just temporary whilst they migrate things - or permanent!

If they expect me to migrate to try to use tasks, then I'll be migrating to a different company.

You know that section on the Evernote Help webpage with various boxes you're supposed to be able to click, in order to submit a ticket (which doesn't work either—it just leads you down a circularity of non-involvement)?

The only option that appears to force them to open a ticket is with "Account" questions (including log-in issues). Anything else regarding bug reports etc. will just get you an automated response saying they won't respond unless they need more information from you. The possibility that their paying customers might want information from them isn't a consideration, apparently.

Yes, as I said in my message to them, if the Reminder feature isn't going to be restored, then there's nothing to keep me with Evernote apart from nostalgia.

I'll post any response I get to this thread!

I got one of those useless e-mails telling me it would be fixed as a priority, but that obviously wasn't a human being responding.

The latest update made the word 'Notes' smaller (but still chops off the header of the first note) - I don't even mind if the reminder button moves - I just want a way to list my reminders by date.

I think I'm going to give Notion a look over in the meantime but please do report back if you get further details. I will give them one more 'update' chance and then use the account contact as a way of trying to establish if I'm quitting or not.

One thing is for sure, if I do switch, I won't be coming back.

Link to comment

@MystifyWayne Yes. I'll make a decision on the back of how they respond, too.

Did the email you receive specifically say that the missing Reminders function would be fixed? Or was it a general "We're looking into things, don't call us, we'll call you if we need to" automated message?

Response received just now. I replied telling them that the Reminders filter/toggle doesn't allow for chronological / date-order sorting, which makes it virtually useless if you have multiple Reminder notes and organise time-sensitive work by order of priority (and I'm sure they're aware of that already)...but it's at least a positive, in my book, that they've at last acknowledged the issue and have confirmed they are working on it.

Yes, same for me as with @Nathan T.

The Filter toggle was already there and had been suggested weeks ago as a workaround.

What has changed is that there is now a Sort By feature called "by Reminder Time".

By default, my Reminder notes display at complete random, so it's useless to even have reminders. (If you have 4 or 5, maybe it's okay; if you have 40 or 50, forget it.)

When I toggle the "by Reminder Time" feature, nothing happens, whether sorting up or sorting down.

So I guess we're on the beta version of the solution to a problem of their own creating.

@MattSM@Nathan T

I think I found the issue/bug. The update seems to working good on my app. So I played with some with the settings to find the issue.

When I besides the new feature "sort by reminder time" also use the filter to filter only on notes with reminders the notes with reminders are random (not in any order). When I deselect the filter to filter on notes with reminders the notes are back on upcomming reminder dates followed with notes without reminders.

That appears to be the case for me too, except it starts with past, done reminders. So I would have to scroll through hundreds of those to get to the current ones.

@Nathan T I don't have many reminders in the past. I remove or move them or completely remove the note.

Link to comment

Yes, it's back in a different way.

I think it's been said above, but I can now sort my notes by Reminder date, which is a start.

However, it doesn't work when you add a filter - so you can filter on Reminders (which is what the app used to do with the 'Reminders' tab) - however, you can't sort this particular filter by date.

If that comes back, then I think we are back to where we were before they messed it all up?

I think.....

(Nothing ever seems that simple with Evernote)

But if you have "done" reminders, it puts them all at the top, making the sort useless. And if you try to filter to notes with active reminders to counter that, it doesn't sort at all.

The old setup with the tab handled all this properly, while also being more convenient to get to.

I'm definitely finding this 'new' way of doing it, far more of a faff. If there was some way to create your own 'tabs' of filters, and if you could sort the reminder filter on date then we'd potentially have a better system than previously.

This new system is just awkward as I keep having to switch between reminder order and created/updated order depending on whether I'm working through my reminder list or trying to access a recent note without a reminder.

I sincerely hope there are further tweaks to come.

This doesn't work for me. No matter how I click Sort By, my Reminder notes are still all in a completely random order.

I've given up, at this stage—the Android app is no longer fit for purpose. I just use it to consult specific recent notes the titles of which I happen to remember, so I don't need to search for them in date order but can just type them into the search bar.

@Bookish realtor That's basically a stock email response, but with the added acknowledgement that the Reminder feature is messed up.

I updated to the latest Android app version today (10.100.1), and it still doesn't work. I'm no longer following this as closely as I was, as I've given up on a very good feature that Bending Spoons have not so much bent as snapped in two.

I now only use the app for notes that I'm currently working on (or have very recently worked on), the titles of which I can remember and can simply type into the search bar. For my purposes, it's no longer possible to use the app for anything productivity-related, and hasn't been since the end of June.

Below is an update email I sent to Evernote Support. I'll keep posting as and when I get round to it, but for now, I can only really work with the desktop client.

Seems that they have broken it again recently.

Sorting by reminder sate worked for a little while, and now you can either order it starting with all notes that have no reminder OR reminders that are well into the future backwards

Completely useless!

Sorting by reminder sate worked for a little while, and now you can either order it starting with all notes that have no reminder OR reminders that are well into the future backwards

Completely useless!

I don't know about "again". From my side, it never worked. The Reminder sort-by-date feature was removed, then it was reinstated but in a non-usable way, because you could filter for reminders with dates, but the order was random instead of being chronological. Users in this thread suggested workarounds, none of which seemed to work, for me.

My last chaser email to EN Support was on Aug. 8, and I received an apologetic response only on Aug. 30, asking for full details of the issue again. I responded this morning, so I'll update this thread with any response received.

I've set my own reminder on this for a month from now, which reflects what I think of their responsiveness. We'll see...

For a while, I could sort by reminder date and it was usable. The tab system was far better of course, but I hoped it was slowly being sorted

Then I had some message that my notes needed 'reorganising' and it completely broke it!

Support are useless, and that's actually the bigger problem to me. I can accept errors and bugs far more than I can accept non communication.

Just updating this thread with the latest responses received from EN Support, as promised.

The first image below is what I received on Friday, 30 August, after a silence of a month or more. I responded to that email with what must be the third explanation of what the issue is.

The second image is what I've just now received, by way of response.

On the positive side, it didn't take them nearly as long to reply, this time. On the negative side, the issue still isn't fixed. Back on the positive side, they profess to be hard at work to rectify the problem. Back on the negative side, I'm not sure I believe them.

We'll see...... 💀🙄💀🙄💀

Hi @MattSM and others,
we all know (automatically generated?) text fragments from support. There's no need to paste them here as screen shots that disturb discussions. I'm also affected by lacking Reminder functionality (see 042 - Sort Notes by Reminder Date) and hope to get it fixed in near or at least forseeable time.

And I'm optimistic that persistent discussions will lead to positive results. See 073 - Following internal links (by simple click) should re-use the current note window as an example to similar annoying fails of EN10's UI:

  • Many people added descriptions of effects
  • Until now (we're at 10.104.3 in the moment) EN is working on that (see release notes 😉).
  • They didn't succeed to fix is so far - but it is going better and better.
  • They cannot work on all things the same time...

But coming back to the Reminders: I see the following effects:
  • Reminder column in simple note lists (of notebooks or result of searches)
    • are available - but not sortable
    • have sometimes an up/down indicator - but with no effect
  • Reminder tab
    • is visible only if the note list shows a notebook
    • shows sometimes notes with a blank Reminder information

@Federico Simionato Is it really such difficult to simply remove the (new) Reminders tab and make the Reminder column in all note lists sortable? 😤

I am not sure these guys from EN know what they are doing nor they are willing to deliver a solution which at least does in the newer versions what it did in the recent ones… They are just programming AI trendy things, which do not really work nor anybody needs. And on top of everything they triple the subscription for this *****. In a B2B business model they were already gone… but B2C seems to have different rules.
IMO the only answer is to terminate the contract asap… that is the only language these guys understand….

if anybody knows a real alternative, please let all know.

They may well not be able to work on all things at once, but they broke something!

Whatever broke that shouldn't have even been released.

I don't care about all the fancy new things - I just want the basic functionality to work.

They should be prioritising fixing things they have broken, rather than adding it to a list of future 'improvements'.

I've just switched to monthly subscription from annual to give me a better chance to leave once I find a suitable replacement.

… or a request for info on alternatives.

Sure, usually a request for FREE alternatives.

Which is good for everybody who is subscribed - it means less and less money taken from improving product & service to subsidize the years long free ride of other users.

So just give them the alternatives, the faster they leave the better.

I was not requesting FREE alternatives explicitl , however reliable alternatives with functionalities which make sense. Not sure what the PM strategy of EN is at all…

Surely that isn't relevant to this discussion?

I pay, and they've broken something that I now have to work around constantly. They are lucky there isn't an obvious rival to move to without a bit of work.

However, if they don't fix it within the next few months, I'll move to another service and change the way I work. I've already started deleting old notes periodically to make a transfer elsewhere slightly easier.

I thought I had value, but now it's much less so, and the support about it has lowered my confidence in the product. If I didn't have so many notes, I'd have left already.

I didn't mind the new features that I have no current intention of using, as long as they don't break current functionality - they did, and that's this discussion. Nothing about wanting freebies.

Agreed, @MystifyWayne.

They offer both a free tier and various premium tiers, so it's incumbent on them to ensure what they offer is fit for purpose, regardless of which tier users choose.

As things stand, both the free and the premium tiers are hamstrung with basic feature dysfunctions, and the one that is the topic of this thread has been out of whack since April or May.

EN worked perfectly well before Bending Spoons acquired it, presumably with the same user demographic breakdown of paying vs non-paying, so telling users to either pay or leave is just a red herring.

Of course, if Bending Spoons announce that the free version is going to be phased out, then that's different. But again — off-topic.

Thankfully it's not me who needs to refresh your memory - just go back in the forum before January 2023.

In addition to what was visible back then in "imperfections", the old company had build a considerable amount of technical debt, mainly hidden in the backend.
