Can't login- my backup codes don't work

The login process is really terrible on the android app.

For some reason the app forgot who I am and asked me to log in and I don't remember my password so I tried resetting it and sending a new password but there it needs a backup code which I fortunately saved. When I put one of the backup codes it says it's not valid or something like that. But when I log in on the browser to post this question, it uses the Google Authenticator app. Why can't it do the same there? It's terrible. I'm really hating this service right now and would like to move everything I have to somewhere else just because of the difficult login process
