peterlemer 14
Somehow these 2 databases were once common, now they're disconnected. How can I get V7 to sync wioth v10 again? pete Link to comment
Evernote Expert agsteele 3,059 Posted July 31, 2023 Evernote Expert Share Posted July 31, 2023 v7 and v10 actually operate separate data on the device but both connect with the data held in the Cloud. So what you need to do first of all is work out which application is failing to sync with the cloud. This will only work if you are a subscriber and not on the Free plan. If you are on the Free plan then I think you are stuck since Free plan users can only have two 'devices' connected to your account. For these purposes each application counts as a device. If you are a subscriber then you can access Evernote via the web client. Make a simple but easily identified change in v7 and separately v10. Check which one isn't sync-ing to the web client. Once you have that information you will be in a position to fault find the sync for that client. 1 Link to comment
peterlemer 14
Thanks agsteele, I am stymied by the fact that my v7 app, seems to have updated to v10 😞 including my 2 more backups. I need a v7 to reinstall, Any ideas? pete Link to comment
Evernote Expert agsteele 3,059 Posted August 8, 2023 Evernote Expert Share Posted August 8, 2023 There was an update message that some users feel was somewhat misleading and they thought they were getting an updated v7 but actually got v10. Since I have been using v10 for sometime I didn't see that message. I don't recommend use of v7 any longer. It seems that it has a very time limited existence. If you search these forums links to the old version are sometimes posted by others. If you need Legacy to keep you going until you find an alternative product then that could be a good way forward. If, though, you intend to transition to v10 eventually then I would recommend that you make peace with the change and discover how to work with the new product. It took me less than two weeks to forget how I previously did things in Legacy. As for backups, if you feel the need then you can manually achieve this backing up each notebook. Or you can automate the process with a GitHub project called evernote-backup or a commercial product called Backupery. 1 Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,795 Posted August 8, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted August 8, 2023 You can download v7.14 here: https://cdn1.evernote.com/mac-smd/public/EvernoteLegacy_RELEASE_7.14.1_458325.zip However I second @agsteele that the use of this version is not recommended at all. It uses an outdated syncing method which always syncs the whole note. This may cause syncing conflicts, as it has done since it was launched. V10 syncs instantly, and only the changes. Both don’t live well together. 1 Link to comment

Level 5 PinkElephant 8,795 Posted August 8, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted August 8, 2023 You can link local files, but you need to type part of the path yourself. Say you have this path to a file: /Users/myusername/Desktop/myfilename.ext In EN use the blue + menu to insert a link. Type a name into the Text field, and copy the path from the Finder into it. In front of the path add file:// and save the link. file:///Users/myusername/Desktop/myfilename.ext When you click on the Text (which shows in blue, indicating there is a link behind it) it will take you to the Finder and there to the file. With some file types it will open the corresponding app, and open the file in the app right away (for example pdf in Preview, Keynote presentation in Keynote etc.). Link to comment
VincentC 343
I'm on Windows and I can link to local files without all the typing that Pink suggests. Basically, in Windows, I drag the file onto the Chrome Omnibar. Then I copy and paste the link into Evernote using the add link, Control-K, function. BTW, I didn't come up this with myself - with Google-foo, I found a post from 2012 posted by JMichaelTX (I think on these forums but maybe somewhere else) that described this tactic. Tried it in Windows and, yay!, it worked. Hope it works for you. Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,795 Posted August 9, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted August 9, 2023 Thanks for the tip, sounds good. Some people - like me - won’t touch a Google product like Chrome, for obvious reasons. I haven’t found a better way directly than adding the file-string to the path. Link to comment

I treid this again, having tried it before and failed now, as then. It's a folder with this filepath: /Volumes/T7_Projects/COMPOSITION/New Song Default Folder/IVORY :Destination3MEDITATION3/Meditation 3/Charts In previous EN this procedure ( with which I am very familiar) would take me to the folder in Finder. In any case, I need to access 50+ files and folders all over my directory and doing thos process requires one at a time, I guess pete Link to comment

Yes, I am putting the link to the containing folder for the project, which includse DAW files, audio files, charts etc. In my example the folder is here: /Volumes/T7_Projects/COMPOSITION/New Song Default Folder/IVORY :Destination3MEDITATION3/Meditation 3/Charts Where the folder 'charts' contains pdf instrumental parts. Level 5 PinkElephant 8,795 Posted August 9, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted August 9, 2023 The links are made for files and their associated apps. I am not aware they are made to open folders as well. The EN concept is a note works the same way as a folder. It is a Container able to hold all sort of content, plus links to files. Link to comment

Evernote Expert agsteele 3,059 Posted August 9, 2023 Evernote Expert Share Posted August 9, 2023 How would this be as a workaround... If I've misunderstood the requirement then my apologies. This is for a Windows system... Create a shortcut on your computer desktop for the folder/directory you want to access from within Evernote. Drag and drop that shortcut into a destination note inside your Evernote account. You can then open the file explorer window for that directory with a double click on the shortcut link inside Evernote. Finally delete the shortcut on the desktop unless you want to keep it there for other reasons. Link to comment

That's lovely, agsteele, I played with it on my Mac and even dragged the file, let alone the alias, and they opened . However, It also opened all the other files in the Finder folder and... I don;t want to open a file, I want to open a folder in the FInder, not in EN, and browse the contents. Thanks for this good trick, I'll try to include it as I go forward cheers pete Link to comment

I get " Evernote 10.58.8 is currently the newest version available." My interest is raised 🙂 (later) Ahhhh, the app Store tells a different story. Now installing 10.60 pete Link to comment

If you have not granted EN all the necessary permissions in MacOS, it is NOT the fault of EN if links are not working. peterlemer 14
I have to own up to misleading the panel by using the wrong terms/concepts. However thanks to everyone who responded, which has helped me make some distinctions. What I am /really/ looking for is the familiar ( to me, at least) 'Reveal in Finder' This is what I've meant by 'open' which was/is incorrect. I dont't want files to open in EN, I want to go to the folder on my drive to access other material associated with a particuler audio. Again, apologies. I hope this makes my need clearer. pete Link to comment
Boot17 1,537
This works for me: file:///the filepath/ Make sure you have three forward slashes after "file:" and one forward slash at the very end of the path. Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,795 Posted August 10, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted August 10, 2023 Just gave it a try: With a folder path in the link section, it opens the folder in the finder. file:///Users/myuser/Documents/Folder/Subfolder With this link the subfolder is opened in a new Finder window. This works with or without a slash at the end. @peterlemer Nice discovery by this question, I never tried before. Thanks for bringing this up. Link to comment

How do I adjust the permissions anyway? pete Link to comment
