Selection and deleting text in a note, clips outside the selection

Recommended Posts

Hi,  Not sure if this is  a known issue, did a review on bugs but did not find anything related.

Phone :  Android S23 Ultra
Evernote version :  10.52.2 ( 1207769)
App updated : (With latest version on Google play store as of 27-Jul-23)
Keyboard:  Google keyboard Gboard

Issue :  in a note (new or existing ) with a large paragraph of text included, If i select a word or set of words on the screen ( by long press and drag), when i select delete / backspace OR if i start typing (GBoard keyboard), i would expect the selection will be deleted and removed.  However the result is the selection is deleted + an amount of text in front of the selection is also removed.  This means i cannot Select and delete like i used to without having to retype additional deleted text which i don't want deleted..

When :  I use select and delete a lot to correct text entries a lot as i rewrite text. I started noticing this issue as of last few weeks ( not sure exactly when)

Expected behaviour :  Only selected text is deleted or overwritten when i select it via screen and press delete or start typing.

Other platforms :  Issue is not reproduced on Web platform via Chrome browser.  Only seen in Android version.

I haven't seen this reported recently but in the past for sure.  There are a number of issues that exist between Gboard and Evernote.

I don't know where the problem can be tackled. Is it an Evernote issue or a Gboard issue?  I did try a couple of alternative keyboards on my phone and they worked just fine with Evernote. So one solution might be to try out a different keyboard and see if that does what you need.

I think I tried Microsoft Swiftkey which worked well enough for me.  But I'm back with Gboard and work around the one issue that affects me.

In the meantime log a support ticket to get your concerns noted.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  Not sure how this could be on gboard side. I also thought it may be related to the evernote AI summary feature somehow. As it appeared around same time. But to be fair this is only speculation.

So an interesting finding after your idea to switch keyboard.  The issue appears on both SwiftKey and gboard. However is NOT present with Samsung keyboard. Not sure I see the pattern here.  Maybe something underneath the scene happening ..

Good reminder on support ticket. I thought this forum was it.  I have raised the support ticket for the same now.

I just tried highlighting a block of text and then deleting with Swiftkey and then repeating the process with Gboard.  It worked just fine with both keyboards. Evernote 10.52.2 and Android v13

Something flakey but I couldn't say what.

Nonetheless there are a couple of other issues between Gboard and Evernote for Android so you are not crazy ;)

Sorry for a little thread drift, but yesterday I had issues with input using an alternative keyboard, Smart Keyboard Pro, which I use mainly because of its large selection of non-English keyboards, and its customizability. I was actually using Google speech-to-text to do input, accessed through a microphone-labeled key in SKP. I read several paragraphs into a note and closed the note with the green check mark. But when I looked at the note in Windows, the text was not there, and checking back in Android it was also gone. Not being that bright, I did the same thing a couple more times, with the same result. Evidently the alternate-input text was not being properly "received" into the note so that it could sync. I did it again, just a paragraph at a time, and always selecting and copying the paragraphs into the Android clipboard. Eventually I was able to get everything into the note, but it involved some pasting.

I also input some Hebrew text from SKP into the note, and this also did not seem to be properly "received." Pasting Hebrew text in worked just fine, I just couldn't type it reliably. So it seems that Evernote does not play well with anything but stock keyboards ... anymore, that is. I've done this kind of thing with previous versions of the Android app without difficulty. Currently I have v. 10.52.1 build 1207729.

Okay so based on the comments I did a few more experiments. Thinking it was maybe due to some leftover misconfig during an upgrade I deleted the app and reinstalled.

The issue still exists after with gboard.

There was a change though,  fleeting a selected set of text still removes text outside the clipping(to the right of the selection only). However starting to write with text selected no longer removes excess text and only the selection is deleted. Previously writing over also had the issue.

Let's see if support ticket will yield any known issues.
