2 problems with export PDF (Numbered List changing; text of exported PDF is not visible when reading the PDF in dark mode of adobe reader)

Recommended Posts

When evernote notes is exported as PDF, I face 2 problems.

1) The numbered list changes. (Observe the marked numbers in the image 3 )

2) When I read the exported PDF in dark mode in any PDF reader (including adobe reader), normal text is not visible (coloured text is visible).  ( See images 3 & 4 of exported PDF below of Light mode and Dark mode in adobe reader)

Anybody else facing this issue?  (Please check once:  Try to open exported PDF in PDF reader in dark mode )

Any solution available. @gazumped @PinkElephant

Whether this issue has been in the notice of Evernote developing team.

In "Evernote Legacy" version both these problems don't exist. In Print to PDF from legacy version, both colour of text in dark mode and numbered list are perfect.  (But in legacy version, there are 2 other problems of font size and spacing between lines in print to PDF)

Other Information:

OS: Windows 11.

Evernote: 10.58.8 version.

My text font in evernote is "Auto". (I have tried text fonts of black, white. But both of them have same result as Auto, when viewed in PDF reader in Dark mode).

Hi.  Two suggestions -

  1. Contact Support about this - Evernote does read forum posts,  but it will take time for them to get around to everything and they rarely comment;  bringing it up direct means they see it sooner than later and you get some kind of reaction.
  2. Have you tried creating the PDF yourself in Adobe / MS / Libre Office and attaching it to your note?  It's still visible inline and may be less affected by importing/ exporting from Evernote rather than printing.

Thank you for suggestion @gazumped ,

I have not attached PDF to notes.

But I have exported PDFs from OneNote, which are clearly visible (normal text & coloured text) in both dark mode and light mode of Adobe reader.

The text books I study are also clearly visible in both dark mode and light mode of Aobe reader.

Only exported PDFs from evernote are not visible in Dark mode of Adobe reader (in other PDF readers also).

Just a thought... Rather than exporting to PDF you could print to PDF. Perhaps that will work.

Thanks for response @agsteele,

I have tried print to PDF as well. ( Save as PDF;  Print to PDF,  Direct Print )

I have also tried HTML export and then printing HTML.

I have tried in both iPAD and Windows.

Nothing worked.

Can you once check in your system. Export a notes as PDF and open the exported PDF in dark mode in any PDF reader.

I'm on my mobile device at the moment which won't help. Neither do I use dark mode. Sorry.

@gazumped I have reported on twitter to @evernotehelps.

@gazumped Can you kindly check whether you (or) any of our commuity members are also facing the issue of reading exported PDF in dark mode.

I  also request community members to once check this. Do the following:

Export a Notes as PDF → Open the exported PDF in a PDF reader / Adobe Reader → Switch to dark mode in PDF reader / Adobe reader.

Kindly let me know whether you are able to see text clearly in dark mode in PDF reader / Adobe reader.

And also what about reading the exported PDF in dark mode.

I would posit that this part is a problem with Adobe and not with Evernote. The PDF is generated in "light mode" regardless of whether you are viewing the note in dark mode or light mode in Evernote. In dark mode, A PDF Viewer will try its best to adjust the colors of the PDF text to compensate for the background now being black. In this case, it looks like Adobe Acrobat is just not adjusting the colors well enough... perhaps because the text colors that Evernote exports are more of a gray than they are black.

For example, I tried the above test and here is what the PDF looks like in dark mode using an app called "Negative" on the Mac and it looks ok.

(Also - you can see that I have the same issues with the numbering.)

Maybe there is some kind of preference setting in Adobe that you can tweak for it? (Guessing probably not though.)

@Boot17Thank you for responding.

Can you @Boot17 kindly attach the pdf you have exported. I will try your PDF in my adobe reader.  Then I may get more clarity on what is causing the problem.

@Boot17

I have opened your PDF in Adobe reader and Foxit Reader.

In both PDF readers, the normal text is almost invisible.

In your "Negative" reader there is still one issue:

The 2 colours highlighted have changed their colour.

The second line is Red clour. But it changed to Light blue colour in dark mode.

The third line is Light Blue colour. But it changed to yellowish colour in dark mode.

In Dark Mode, in your "Negative reader", normal text is visible, but coloured text changes to other colours.

In Dark mode, in Adobe reader, norml text is almost invisible, but coloured text remains as it is (doesn't change to other colours).

The correct thing is : In dark mode, the text should be clearly visible and the coloured text should remains as it is(without changing colour).

When I export PDF from OneNote and "Evernote Legacy", this correct thing happens.

When exported as PDF from OneNote: In dark mode, in Adobe reader, the normal text is clearly visible and the coloured text remains as it is (without changing colour).

When exported as PDF from "Evernote Legacy" : In dark mode, in Adobe reader, the normal text is clearly visible and the coloured text remains as it is (without changing colour).  But problem with Evernote legacy is the font size variations and spacing between lines in the exported PDF.

Present Evernote (version 10+) should also get to this correct situation.

I have reported the numbered list issue to EN support. They acknowledge the problem.

About the dark mode: I don't have a PDF viewer that uses dark mode, but I guess that it has something to do with the text color being dark gray (instead of black) and therefore also dark gray (instead of black converted to white) in dark mode.

Thank you @janndk ,

Can you also kindly report Dark mode problem to EN support. Support team will check and tell whether it is a problem or not.

Dark mode is very very important issue for me. Please kindly report it ti EN support. @janndk

Both numbered list and dark mode text are perfectly working in Legacy version. But there are 2 other issues PDF from  legacy version -- Text font size and spacing between lines. Hence,  I have to depend on latest version and dark mode is essential for me.
